sailing small boats at local parks

I'd love to rent a small sail boat from a local park and go sailing, maybe at Mason Neck or one of the parks over there that has boats for rent.

My question is, has anyone rented one of these boats for a day? Do I need to get there early in the morning to get one, or are they usually still available in the afternoons?

Any NOVA parks that are recommended for this purpose would be good to know, also..

We went to the park down by Gunston Hall and rented a Sunfish last fall. From the reaction of the staff, we were the first people to rent one in ages.

Washington sailing marina, but I think that they require you to show a license in order to rent. There is another marina a few miles south, the name escapes me, but I rented from them a few years ago and they didn't ask for proof of license.

I have never seen a sailboat in Burke Lake park. I take my kayak there all the time. Or you can rent one from Atlantic kayak and they will take you on a cool trip - like Dyke Marsh or Georgetown.

we can only hope that whatever boat reston rents has a few holes in the hull. Make sure you forget to put on a PFD too.

Buddy just reminded me of fishing last night and i just did a bunch of research for the area. with summer on the way most marina's in the area are now open for the weekends and then open everday 5/26/06 on memorial weekend.

so far Burke Lake: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/burkelake/marina.htm looks the best for renting a row boat, the prices say $15 for a whole day.

Im not sure but also so far seems to be one of the few lakes unlike Lake Fairfax: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lakefairfax/marina.htm that allows fishing off the boats. lake fairfax is good if you wanna get your paddle boat on.

and using the zoom option on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=fairfax+county,+va&t=k&om=1 One Zoom option shows golf course names, and another shows the names of all the local lakes. and switching to the satellite view is nice too really see how big the lake is.

And think i found a nice spot to fish but there isnt much info on it, and only info i got was that access to the lake is limited with no developed boat ramp. Beaverdam Creek Reservoir: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/display.asp?id=17 anyone ever been there?

the last big one i found was Occoquan Reservoir: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/display.asp?id=97

Virginia Dept. of game & inland fisheries listing of local lakes: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/index.asp?type=1

also got my fishing license the other day and it is all automated now and the sales clerk just printed out the sheet and didnt cut the paper, so at the bottom the URL link was showing: http://virginiainteractive.org/dgif/licensing/sales/index.cgi and found by going back a few dirs you can search peoples private info and address just by the description of their boats if they are registered: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/boating/boat_info.html but you gotta pay money and apperrently your private info is for sale starting at $3K for a full database.

To all the fishermen out there-

Have you ever caught one of those snakefish? They scare me to death. I have only heard of them being caught in Maryland. I sure hope they don't come to Virginia. They can crawl, you know!!!
