Grocery prices

It seems as though the prices for the items I buy are actually going down. Has anyone else noticed this?

Check the quantity of the products. You probably got 15-20% less product in a package for that 5% price decrease.

No, prices are not going down, this is particularly true of meats and in my own experience, beer. Meat prices are affected by the midwest droughts of the past two years causing increases in feed prices, which trickle down to consumers. Beer, I don't know, probably relying on many of the same inputs. Still kind of depressing to pay almost $10 for a 6 pack of a decent beer.

Food costs overall have increased only modestly over the past year (March to March), and the unit prices of such items as breads, dairy products, many fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, and frozen foods for home prep have all indeed declined over that time. YMMV of course, and if your diet consists of beef and beer, you won't have all that long to worry about prices anyway. The price of beer by the way has increased over that past year by less than the average for all foods and beverages.

I can carry two hundred dollars worth of food in two hands, when Bush was president that amount of money would fill two carts, and my cars gas tank only ate two hundred bucks worth a month. now I spend about four hundred a month, no vacation trips either.

Grocery prices are influenced slightly by environmental conditions. I forget why, but bluberries right now are outrageous. I think I saw $9+ for 18oz when I used to get that for $6-7. Meanwhile, rasberries are ok and blackberries are $4 for 18oz. It just depends on the crop conditions where they're being harvested at that time of year.

Preprepared shit shouldn't fluctuate because most of it's not real food anyway. Its made in a lab.

Regardless, the more things cost, the more you have to work. The more you have to work, the more you're kept in check.

Sadly, even doing this it's getting tougher and tougher to just remain afloat.

Prepared food costs are easier to mitigate becuase the packaging can be downsized and artificial ingredients lend themselves to subsitution and dilution. Much of it is 40-60 percent fat.

I remember when fast food meals were generally under $5. It was a big deal when Five Guys came out with $5 burgers, $3 fries, and $2 drinks so that a lunch at a dive encroached on $20 for two.

I remember the good ole days when I was a member in a gym 15 miles away and went five times a week. If I did that now, it would cost me 1000 bucks a year, far more than the $300 I was paying for the gym.

$3.99+ for an 8-10 oz. bag of potato chips. You can buy pounds and pounds of potatos for that price.

My word, but you're stupid. Why are you linking to worthless and outdated secondary sources? CPI-U data for March were released by BLS on April 15. That's more than a week ago already. The realese shows notes all food prices increased by 1.7% between March 2013 and March 2014. CPI-U Table 2 reports the 12-month change by detailed expenditure category. That's where the other info in the earlier post can be found. You didn't know that. You are not only wrong, but also stupid. Such a surprise to come across a stupid person around here.

A smart man/woman would either purchase more efficient transportation or drive less. Move closer to work or work closer to home.
And eat less. It's only gonna get worse, dummy.

Nearly all limes used in the US are grown in Mexico. Severe storms damaged the crop. Seizing a new opportunity, drug cartels began raiding orchards and highjacking delivery trucks. Expect to spend a few bucks more for a maragarita for a while in places where you can find them.

Breads: -1.0
White bread -1.6
Bread other than white -0.3

Dairy and related products: 2.3
Milk 4.8
Fresh whole milk 5.9
Fresh milk other than whole 4.2
Cheese and related products 2.6
Ice cream and related products -0.6
Other dairy and related products -0.1

Beyond that you can cherry pick (no pun intended) any number of other typical products which don't fit your claim other than 'beef and beer.'

Chicken up 3.6%
Eggs up 9.9%
Fish up 5.9%
Canned fruits and vegetables up 3.3%
Citrus fruits up 17%
Potatoes up 9.1%
etc.

Confirmed. Wrote:

Let's review for the benefit of the historically illiterate. Inflation had raged through 1974-75 as the result of the first Arab oil crisis. Nixon/Ford tried to combat that event with rationing and wage/price controls. Big failure. Carter meanwhile had inflation in the 5.5% to 7.5% range until the second oil crisis hit in 1979. Rather than follow the failed policies of the past, he allowed inflation to do the necesary rationing for him. Worked rather well and scared the bejesus out of all those petro-dollar hoarding OPEC dudes. They were never able to function as a cartel again. There was however no point at which inflation reached 16%.

While all Reagan inherited was the tail end of a commodity crisis that had already been all but resolved, inlfation did not get back into the 7.5% range until 1982. And it got down to that level in part because Reagan had interest rates jacked up as a means of collaring the economy. The result was what at the time was the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. That's where the "Rust Belt" came from as our northeast manufacturing base simply collapsed. Unemployment soared above 10% for ten consecutive months, That would compare to one during the recent Great Bush Recession. But even under Reagan, the federal funds rate (the one that the FED actually influences) never reached 22%.

As for top marginal tax rates, get serious. 1980's top marginal rate of 70% had been there since 1971. Carter didn't give anybody anything on that score.

Bottom Line Here: Nixon/Ford bungled one oil crisis and the seeds of recovery were then brought to flower under Carter. After an island of sanity was disturbed, Carter dealt forcefully with a second oil crisis, but Reagan turned the seeds of that recovery into a complete national disaster. And you don't know jack about income taxes. So few assholes do, of course.

You are no doubt making some people puke, A poster stated her belief that prices seemed to be falling for items that she tends to purchase. Another poster then quite rudely contradicted her suggestion, claiming that grocery prices were in fact going up. It was then pointed out (by me) that price increases for food in general have been quite modest over the past year, and that prices for many commodity subgroups have in fact been declining. These are incontrovertible facts taken directly from the official source of such data. Your wild-eyed and reactionary input here is and was not needed. Neither is it of any discernible quality. The fact that some subgroups are going up does not in any way obviate the fact that some subgroups are going down, quite in line with what the OP may have experienced.
