Mapping POVERTY in Fairfax County
Posted by: WingNut ()

http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2014/01/05/poverty-map/

Pardon me in advance for posting this, it's already in Off Topic, but getting a conversation about it is impossible.

The pockets of "poverty" in the county seem to be-

Reston- Fairway and N.Shore Drive areas, south of Lake Anne poorer than north 38% poverty....South Lakes and Glade drive, south of 267. ;lower but still higher than surrounding...

Lincolnia-or more appropriately, West Landmark, area south of 236 but west of 395....

Annandale- American, Heritage, Patriot Dr area...

Hybla Valley/Rt 1 Corridor- Still did not fare nearly as badly as Reston...

Skyline- looks worse than I thought, ranks with the crummy older apts in Baileys...

East side of Soringfield- definitely ranks worse than west. East of 95 is about 7% poorer....

Couple of other standout enclaves again in Annandale, Centerville and Chantilly, relatively low pverty numbers though.

Interesting shit.

Herndon didn't really show up as a poverty spot either.

I really don't think Herndon have a poverty problem and besides, the illegals -are not going to be in the census. You know....the ones at 7-11. The pockets that you mentioned didn't surprise me at all.

Poverty is in every single grocery store, drug store, retail store and restaurant in every town in Fairfax County.

You people told them to go to college and they did and they're still there. Only now they are in debt and working for peanuts. As we all know college is and will always be for intellectuals and rich kids.

You people go on and on about equality yet the greatest unequality lays in I.Q distribution, not in black, white... male,female...

Everytime you frequent any business in any town you are witnessing incredible poverty and desperation. They've had their egos fluffed into believing they make their own bed and destiny yet, it was chosen at birth simply by I.Q and family income. The Me generation was all about taking responsibility for their own abuse and slavery.

That is pretty amazing. I've lived in Reston but I probably know SW better.

SW has Tiber Island and some nice buildings that house some money and probably make up for the crap hoods on DE Ave and just west of Nats Park.

Reston does a better job of hiding the poor with it's eco friendly and subtle woodsy design.

Chantilly is 25% to Restons 38%....

Reston has far superior community planning, I would have guessed Chantilly would beat Reston with more in poverty but it is opposite.

I still laugh when people tell me Reston (or Chantilly) is the hood.

Reston's been playing that 'planned community' thing for way too long. That's been over for the most part for probably going on 20 years now. No different than pretty much any other around here these days.

Street layout and building architecture is still far better aesthetically than Chantilly, there is no Meadows of Reston trailer park and nothing like Shenandoah Crossing on any of the main drags in Reston.

If you were preparing apples to apples, I'd prefer a comparable home in Reston to Chantilly any day, even with the toll road and more "poverty".

Meh... true but only marginally so.

At least for now... give it another 10 years.

The street layout is fucked up in places already with growth and the architecture looks about like every other newer strip mall and housing community in the area.

Yeah, I was being generous. Some aspects of it were different and worked to some extent for a while. But that was long ago. Largely marketing and wishful thinking since.

This is amazing, Fairfax county has extremely low levels of poverty. The boom times of Herndon, Reston and Tysons is coming. Now if only we can get the Yellow line extended down route 1 we can fix the mistakes of the past and redevelop Richmond Hwy so that it is a thriving community. Columbia Pike streetcar will probably be a done deal and will help the struggling Skyline area.

its not racial its socioeconomic

the crappiest places are going to be cheapest

the people with the least amount of money are the blacks and hispanics

vicious cycle

Here is the ugly truth

We need people to do all the crappy service level entry jobs

If you revitalize these areas the people still need to live somewhere

Results even more concentrated poverty in the areas that are still affordable

I think there is plenty of yuppy housing/amenities for this area already

Exactly. But the goober-people love to hate the blacks and hispanics, so they are not going anywhere near that idea. Not that many other ideas make it into their tiny little heads either.

> the crappiest places are going to be cheapest.
> the people with the least amount of money are the
> blacks and hispanics.

There are of course blacks and hispanics at every income level. What could be more accurately said is that the entire income scale for blacks, hispanics, and other minorities has been shifted downward relative to that of whites so that fewer minorities are at or near the top income levels and more of them are at or near the bottom.

> vicious cycle

Yes. It's called racism, and it's a national disgrace.

> Here is the ugly truth. We need people to do all the crappy service level
> entry jobs.

There is a demand for low-skilled, low-wage labor all across the economy. These are not necessarily "crappy, entry-level jobs". They are just work that needs to be done as part of a larger process. Some of these jobs emphasize physical strength and endurance. Some emphasize basic technical skills and some sense of empathy. Robots are not about to take over these jobs. They are going to be with us in the long-run. We can either pay the workers in these jobs a decent wage, or we can pay them a substandard wage and let them all draw welfare benefits to make up the difference. We know that WalMart prefers the latter approach. It keeps costs off their books and out of the way of their profits. Most sensible people prefer the former approach, believing that it is in fact WalMart's customers and stockholders who should be paying WalMart's costs, not taxpayers at large.

> If you revitalize these areas the people still
> need to live somewhere.

Yes, they still need to live somewhere, but where they end up will depend in large part on how you revitalize. In Fairfax, we have gotten too close to the point where unless they have some better second income in the household, our teachers, police, firefighters, EMTs and other essential public sector workers cannot afford to live in the county. The same is true for our essential private sector service workers as well. The Board has reacted to this by requiring developers to include affordable housing units in the projects they build. These are not intended as welfare units but simply as units that ordinary people can afford.

The same approach has been used in SE DC. What were "the projects" were torn down long ago. Of course you have FFXU morons claiming they were down there just last week and were mugged by a gang of ink-stained teenage rappers, but in fact you'd be more likely to encounter an elderly woman in a floral print dress out walking her two toy poodles. What you have today is block after block of mixed-income housing. Yuppie lawyers and project managers living with recent nursing school grads, retired elevator mechanics, and that lady with the poodles who's on SSI disability. That's the future in Fairfax as well for those whose heads do not explode in the meantime.

> Results even more concentrated poverty in the
> areas that are still affordable

It isn't so much just those in poverty anymore. Thanks to continuing distortions in income disribution, it is now people who work a full-time job for all or most of the year who can't find a place to live in this area that is actually affordable for them. And the goober-people wonder why ten of them might agree to pitch in $200 apiece to rent a $2000-a-month house.

> I think there is plenty of yuppy housing/amenities
> for this area already

There certainly are, and there need to be. There are a lot of high-skilled, high-income young professional workers in this area. To say nothing of the high proportion of dual-income households and engines of economic power. What we need to do here is meet the needs of other demographic segments as fully and successfully as we have met the needs of this one.
