Fairfax Co. teen hit while running for bus dies

BURKE, Va. (AP) - A Fairfax County teen hit by a car last week while running for his school bus has died.

County police say 16-year-old Shahm Khaznadar of Burke died Monday night from his injuries.

Police say the Robinson Secondary School student was hit around 7 a.m. on Jan. 21 as he tried to cross Burke Centre Parkway in the Burke area.

Police say Khaznadar started out in the crosswalk but veered out of it and into the path of a 1998 Ford Mustang. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died Monday night.

A real tragedy.

But FCPS NEVER, EVER requires students to cross a 4-lane road like Burke Centre Parkway to catch their bus. One or more buses service EACH SIDE of roads like that. This poor kid missed his assigned bus and was crossing Burke Centre to catch the one that services the other side of the Parkway.

Kids do this all the time. They run accross busy roads in the pitch black.
What is so important about that extra 5 minutes that's worth risking their lives for?

Parents, MAKE your kid catch his/her ASSIGNED bus or drive them to school yourselves!

Kids think they are immortal and assume that drivers a) see them, and b) will avoid hitting them. This is a very risky assumption.

Poor kid was in the crosswalk when he was hit. All the kids on the bus had to witness him lying in the road. Such a tragedy. God bless his parents.

The news said he was NOT in the crosswalk. He only started in the crosswalk and then shortcutted out of the walk.

God is a figment of the cult we call religion.

Still. What's up with the driver of the car that hit him? You're supposed to stop for people in crosswalks, even if they do stray outside of the lines while crossing.

Lot's of people say "God bless you" when you sneeze, and they may not even believe in God.

I'm sure it was just an expression of sympathy towards the parents, not a religious invocation.

It was probably dark outside. He was probably wearing dark clothes. Don't think there are street lights on this particular part of the road. But really, Bob, I am surprised you weren't actually there to witness it all and write the police report. Maybe, Bob, you were the driver who done wrong this time.

How about the kid open his eyes and pay attention to the cars that are speeding by why he commits the illegal act of Jay Walking? Moron.

What about the driver? If there is a physical barrier and they are moving along with green light then how is it their fault? You can't just claim "base" and run out like you have eternal safety because you are in the confines of a striped roadway.......still stinks for the family of the kid, but I'm sure the driver feels just as bad, even though they did nothing wrong..

Fairfax County absolutely DOES NOT want to change the bell schedule!

It's a small group of mamas that are pushing it.

They might succeed if we, the majority, don't make our wishes known.

LOUDLY urge your Supervisor and School Board member to vote NO on SleepIN!!!

Maybe because the kid will get in trouble if he doesn't catch the bus.

Relax the rules on kids being late, and maybe a life would have been saved today.

The most dangerous part of a bus is the ten feet outside it.

Yesterday, at GMU, a young woman rushed one of the shuttle buses and pounded on its door. The driver asked her for some identification so he could report her to his supervisor. She walked away rather than let the driver know who she was.

Is this legal?

I thought she could be charged with impeding a moving vehicle.

I wasn't aware that GMU bus driver supervisors could issue tickets.
