Whats the Story on the (571) Area Code?
Posted by: 411 w/ 571? ()

Is (571) area code ever assigned to a landline? Or is it always a cell phone overlay?

I have a 571 for my cell. As someone who has a business in the DC-area for a reason, it pisses me off that it isn't 703.

571 was added to our local area code, as were most because of the great influx of new phone numbers in about the last ten years, primarily cell phones. It used to be the middle number on a area code was 0, but that system was abandoned and nationally, we have a secondary area codes, like 571.

When a 703 number comes available, (someone moves or doesn't want to keep their number) that number is open and is usually taken quickly because of the implied value. These values will diminish over time since the 571 is not new anymore and seen as inferior, even though it has the same value.

In short, there are far more 571s available, since not a lot of people have given up their 703s.

If you are looking for a 703 for your cell, you may have to push to get a 703, but if you ask and don't just get one assigned, you can usually get one for your cell.

Addendum:
Since Verizon has always been the major supplier for these number assignations, they would most likely be the best source for getting a 703 designation for your cell, business or home phone.

Before they were Verizon, they were Bell Atlantic and before that they were C&P (Baby Bell).

The old area code system was based on the rotary phone and ease of dialing. The larger marlets got 212, 213, 213, 313 because the dial had to move less distance.

I don't want a 571 number for cell or house if I have my say.

I've run reverse phone # checks on people with 571's and have never gotten an address back, I guess there is a first for everything though!

yeah 571 = ghetto trakphone or prepaid line

703 = non-ghetto

I won't even call a 571 number if it is a business because they are probably some fly by nite shit and I won't answer them because it's probably some idiot white rapper guy calling the wrong number with his skater/ghetto prepaid phone

You people are demented! Who really cares what the area code is for any number. 571, 703, 202, 301, who cares??!! FWIW, I have 571 for my LAND LINE and 703 for our cell phones. 571 is a local to call to anyone in the 703 area code.

agreed. most everyone i know with verizon in the area has 703.
i got one without asking.

all this talk about "value" -- my questions: can i sell my 703 and get a 571 and make a profit?
will my business make more money because i have a 703 # vs 571?

If no to both, then there is no "value", or that "Value" is equivalent of the value between a Honda and a Toyota sedan. (attempted hijack)

Alot of people at DARPA in Arlington have 571 landline numbers. I'd hardly describe that place as "ghetto" or "fly by night".

So what you're saying is you only associate with classy 703 drug dealers, instead of those ghetto-ass 571 dealers?

That's highfalutin.

Yes, 571's are assigned to landlines - in fact, I used to have a 571 number as my landline phone at my other house. Now, it's 703, but it wasn't before.

Every time I get someone calling my 571 number by accident, it always seems to be some black chick looking for her "Baby Daddy" or some guy speaking Spanish. Your assessment might be correct.

I've had the same phone number all my life CRescent 3-XXXX and my parents had it before that. It was only 5 digits before that! And 703 was the area code for the entire State.

Phone numbers used to have class with the letter prefixes. Arlington was "JAckson"....Alexandria was "KIng"....Annandale was CLearbrook 6".

Never even dialed area codes except for long distance...even if it was DC or suburban Maryland.

The good old days before area codes, it was only about 10 years ago if I remember..

Falls Church used to be JEfferson xxxxxxx. I remember the old dial phones and old business cards on the fridge growing up. That was an antiquted practice even in the 70's.I had to look like a geezer and explain to my late 20-something when I took her to see "Oceans 11"

My mother-in-law in western MA had a party line until a couple of years ago and you could call anyone in town with five digits. She had a single black rotary dial phone which made using any sort of IVR or voicemail system impossible. When my kids were little they didn't understand that the dial had to ALL the way around.

When you write down or store a phone number what format do you use:

(703) 555-1212
703-555-1212
703.555.1212
7035551212

Or do you have some other variant?

The parentheses version was used when the area code was optional. In most places it is no longer optional so I would consider this one dead/dying.

The all dashes version seems to be taking over and hyperlinks quit well on smart phones.

The dotted notation version comes from the IT folks used to writing IP addresses or separating octets in a MAC address. It also hyperlinks on certain smart phones.

703 rules by the way. All you other slim shadys are just imitators.

Jasus God, people, learn to use The Google (as Dubya would say): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_codes_571_and_703 -- this isn't brain surgery. It's an *overlay*. Nothing special about it. Not rare; dozens/hundreds of overlays across the country. And over a decade old. Slightly higher incidence of cell phones/new businesses simply due to greater availability of numbers in the new area code.

I hear they have telephones that don't need cords now, too -- you might want to read up on those, among other recent innovations.

ObAnecdote, obsolete joke:
Telephone rings; little boy answers. "Is your daddy there?" "No." "Do you know how to write?" "Yes." "Can you take a message for me?" "OK." "Thank you. Ask him to call Mr. Jones at CApital-5, 1234." "I don't know how tom ake a capital five!"

Da DUMP bump. I like that one because it's SO obsolete: small child alone (yes, it happens, but unlikely); small child answering phone; no answering machine; and of course the old prefix mnemonic. For those who are too young, trust me, that was a thigh-slapper back in the day.

Oh, and I have a brother-in-law who remembers his phone number from when he was little -- '4'. VERY small town!

Probably the same reasoning payphones for what of them are still around have a 9 as their first digit after the exchange - NPA-NXX-9XXX, as seldom then and now anyone call a payphone, though often time in higher crime areas, incoming calls to payphones are blocked.

(703)-571-**** is the prefix for all Pentagon office number. In my youth I spent many wonderful hours prank calling generals and pretending to be a chicom recruiter looking for disgruntled officers willing to sell classified information. Just put in random numbers for the last four digits and eventually you will find some humorless, career stormtrooper with a stick between his buns. Tell him how evil the US military is and how he's supporting genocide for oil. If you're a really good troll you might get to hear him blow his brains out in his office, as most soldiers who realize how evil they are end up doing!
