FCPS and their ability to create positions in times of tough budget

How is it, that my kids school now has a position for "Dean of Students?"

When did this position come about and what do that do at this point in their lives? They're not in college yet, so what gives?

Is this a teacher position or admin position and how much money is being spent on these Dean of Students?

Never ceases to amaze.

Because the system continues to grow exponentially. The system should have 200,000 students in just the next several years. It takes people to manage and teach so many students. That's why positions are created. The more students, the more adults needed.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Each school is slated to get at least one person in each of the following roles:

1) Turf Field Coordinator (supposedly in charge of scheduling access to the fields and seeing to their upkeep)

2) School Spirit Evangelist (oversees sports and cheerleading, ulterior motive is keeping booster money flowing in, they may also do something about Boosterthon abuses)

3) Director of Athletic Scholarships (this person makes sure every single student athlete with even a hope of getting an athletic scholarship applies for one)

But, in the meantimeā€¦no science books, teachers will lose their jobs, and trailers will continue to be used as classrooms.

i teach an academy class ( vocational) and was told Friday I am part time next year. There are several others also in my school. The cuts are also in the central office and amongst support staff. It is unlike anything I have seen in almost 2 decades.

The "Dean of Students title" is just a name for an AP I that takes discipline issues such as attendance and tardies off the backs of the other AP's so they can concentrate on instruction and other duties. It is not a new position.

The Dean of Students is not a new title, but it's not a very old one either. It's definitely less than 5 years old.

It may be that there are more and more truancy cases, but maybe if they went back to giving F's the problem wouldn't be so great.

It's not an official AP position, it's a 10 month (teacher salary) contract.
