Did anyone else here cry when Glen Brenner died?

I'm an old White guy, and I would bet anything that the death of Glen Brenner and the tribute they gave him was the last time I bawled like a baby.

I couldn't think of anyone who didn't appreciate Glen.

I can't remember if I cried, when I heard about his widowed bride...

Yeah, that was a shock. Gordan Petersen never looked the same. Brenner left a large hole.

22 years since Glenn passed - The good do die young.

Then we had the return of Warner Wolfe.

I remember it like it was yesterday. We made it a point to never, ever miss Glen Brenner. Ever. Of course, those were the years the Redskins were winning, which made it a lot more enjoyable. "Weenie of the Week" was my favorite.

I went over to YouTube earlier today and watched the "Tribute to Glen Brenner." I cried my eyes out all over again.

A shock? He had a brain tumor, not a heart attack. And like most local TV "personalities", he was little more than a no-account shtick-slinging pitchman. The best thing you could say about him was that the guy who followed him wasn't any better.

Your cynicism is one of the reasons I won't mind dying when that time comes.

The Redskins won the Superbowl about the time GB died. That was one heck of a team. Too bad that they've become the Deadskins since then. As for local sports reporting, there will be never again another Brenner or Michael.

I remember it well - so sudden and sad. The tribute used to be on Youtube - I watched it again a few years ago. The Redskins show he and Sonny did was great TV.

Was that before or after the show with Cher?

But I was saddened. Glen Brenner was a good guy and he is still missed.

I remember seeing Glen at Winston's on M St in Georgetown back in the late seventies.
I raised my beer mug and yelled "Hey Glen" from about 20 feet away.

He raised his beer up and smiled at me from ear to ear then we toasted and nodded our heads in the affirmative.

I was blown away that he gave me the time of day let alone give me such a warm hello how ya doing like he did.

My eyes welled up and my nose ran when he died and to this day I never got over it. I think about him every time I watch the sports news.

Thanks for posting this thread sir. I'm kinda old too.

Do you cry for each of the ~40,000 people worldwide who die every day?

Glenn was a great sportscaster at a time when the local news was a big deal and something most of the community watched, with the sportscast being a big part of it. It's just not the same now. It is a strange thing to get upset about the death of someone you have never met, but a lot of people were saddened when Glenn died because he was so entertaining and did make your day happier. A real force of nature. I remember the Channel 9 newscast the day he died. It was tough to watch. All of the Channel 9 team was devastated. I particularly remember the #2 sportscaster for the station, Ken Mease, breaking up as he said his farewell to Glenn at the end of the show. He'd lost his buddy to an untimely death and you had to feel for him. Then the broadcast condluded with Elton John's "Don't let the sun go down on me" playing in the background. Yep, it brought tears. There's no making sense of it. It was just so sad.

I don't cry when raster scanned images on a Cathode Ray Tube no longer appear.

I was doing an internship at WUSA in the summer of 1985. Because he knew that I was the new guy, Glen would purposely duck and move out of my camera shot when he saw that my camera was pointed at him and live on the air.

The first time it happened I zoomed wide to try to fit him back into the viewfinder and the Director went completely nuts in the control room; swearing aloud and asking who the hell I was.

It scared the shit out of me.

Glen was a joker, always.

He became annoying when he thought his schtick was more important than the sports. This was before you had all these places you could look up sports news instantaneously.

Sounds like Glen had quite a few gay lovers here like OP and other tearful posters. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Just come out of the closet and be honest with yourself!

I'm an old white dude and I cried. He was so fun to watch. Part comedian, part sportscaster and 100% great guy. The most impressive thing about his death was the fact that every local TV station covered it as their lead story. He was well respected in the news business and loved throughout the DC area.

I was just a kid but that was a big deal. Glen Brenner was hilarious. My parents were very upset and it was heartbreaking to see Gordon Peterson break down. He really didn't ever see the same after that.

One of my favorite memories of him on tv was him making fun of Gordon Peterson for a light blue and pink suit he was wearing. He said he looked like a dolphin and kept making dolphin noises and slapping his arms together. We laughed so hard. Very, very sad. RIP. Can't believe thats been 22 years ago. That says a lot when people still remember you that well.

I cried, too. And I am a white lady not into sports however I used to watch his broadcasts daily. Its funny how these newscasters feel like family in a way.

sure. In fact his great grandmother said she will be giving away large sums of money to people tommorrow because Glen said he will be resurrected the week after easter. If I were you, I would make sure I am at fairfax police station first thing. Just tell the police inside you are there to meet master healer Glen Brenner great grandmother. They will know why you cam and you will receive your just reward.
