Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Goodbye. Fairfax Underground has outgrown itself, mired in the ugly consequences of its openness
Posted by: YjDDt ()
Date: April 17, 2014 01:36PM

After I write this, I'm deleting my browser bookmark for FFU.

I've been browsing and posting to this forum for a few years. The site has always been kind of dirty, but I appreciated its anonymity, and its arrest records database used to be helpful. Then sometimes you could actually get quick locally relevant information on events as they were happening -- a traffic accident, police action, storm damage, etc. That's useful in a place like Fairfax County, which has no "center," no unifying newspaper or television station, not even any very good moderated bulletin boards online.

But the adolescent trolling, political nut-jobbing, and especially racism has overwhelmed this site. You can't start a thread on anything serious without trolls taking it over. It is no longer anything but a honeypot for ugliness. The trend towards ridiculing suicide and crash victims was probably the last straw for me.

I commend Cary and ben for their motivation in making the site available to the community. Personally, I think it would be a better site if its grounds for moderation were much broader and better defined. If the moderation policy changes, perhaps I'll come back. Thanks Cary and ben, and good luck.

While that's probably true, it is your opinion. I'm sure they'll miss you but I don't get the impression that they'll suddenly change their stance. Just my two cents.

Ben hasn't been around in over five years. It's just Cary now, which would probably explain why it's gone to shit: moderating FFXU is not a one man job.

Many have tried, most fail, including myself.

I tell myself I'm quitting FFXU, going to stop reading it.

But once my computer is one, I find myself opening up chrome, and immediately typing "fair", down arrow, and enter.

The FFXU must leave you, you cannot just leave FFXU.

Sorry for the double post.

You are like the people who threaten to kill themselves. If you really felt that way you would just leave just as a person talking about killing themself isn't really serious.

I always trust actions, not words. And why do you capitalize Cary but not ben?

I have been here a short while and there does seem to alot of fools acting up on here. As they saying goes...

I love it when people say they're leaving but once they run out of other sites to comb over while on the computer, fairfax underground gets entered into the google.

You will come back. It's a certainty. You are trapped and have no choice in the matter. And threatening to leave won't change things. You need to take the bull by the horns and be proactive. lol

Hey OP, instead of bitching and crying about what FU has become, why dont you try to make a difference? Start posting some meaningful content and maybe others will catch on and the trolls and children will get bored and leave.

By you leaving, you are waving the white flag to the fuck ups and degenerates. Dont let them win.

Stop crying, its not manly.

I share your disgust with obscene and otherwise morally or socially offensive content that seems to be growing on the main board here.

I once posted an apology for this site, and I am chagrined to see the degradation of postings since. I remain grateful to live in a country where free speech is valued and protected. But must pornographic, violent, hateful, and otherwise ugly words and images so pollute an open community space that the filth repels and eventually zeros out the voices of all of our better angels?

There is a point to be made about how Fairfax General has "degraded". Lots of stupid off topic stuff. All that's fine in Off-Topic. For that Off-Topic is more amusing than General, but there has to be a distinction between Off-Topic and General. One board for matters than pertain solely to Fairfax, and one for those that don't (fuck the subforums). Lately it's been getting hard to tell between the two.

People deliberately post shit that is neither relevant to Fairfax County or Northern Virginia in the Fairfax County General forum because it's the "Front Page" of Fairfax Underground.

They want to make sure that their ultra clever "ha ha i just made a dookie"-type post will be waiting for people like a turd on the toilet seat in a gas station bathroom.

Since Cary only checks Fairfax Underground once a day at best, they know that their crap will sit and stink up the forum for at least several hours before it's finally wiped up.

I seriously think most of the people who post the vulgar/pointless things on this board are bored high schoolers who are excited about their "grown up" ability to post curse words and racist statements on the internet.

Instead of "look ma, no handlebars" it's all "wow I'm such and adult, I can use bad language." It comes off as pathetic. When I was a teenager we had just gotten dial up so the Internet was something we checked maybe once a week. Otherwise kids were actually spending time with friends and doing fun stuff instead of sitting in their underwear at home trolling on message boards.

I hope my kids are never like the losers on this board who mess it up for the rest of us who just want to read about stuff going on in the county. I am embarrassed this board shows up in the search results for Fairfax County.

For every 20 shitty posts there is one good relevant one (like the Old Pictures of Fairfax thread).

I for one like those percentages. If there's a subject that doesn't interest me, it takes 0.01 seconds to pass by it.

In my opinion this website is extremely repulsive. So many people just talking trash about one another, having no remorse or proof of the allegations being made. This site is filled with people who have nothing better to do than hurt other from behind a computer screen. Why this should be a website about helping others and passing information around a community not a war zone where people put other people on trial and say horrible things about people. This is no better than cyber bullying except the anonymous names prevent you form having to reveal who they are. This is like a middle school where people do nothing but start rumors about others to hurt peoples feelings.

I hope that you read this message and think, about your future activity and really only present information that is factual and helpful to others in the northern Virginia area. Put yourself in the person your about to hurt before you post your message.
