Help me recall the name of the Financial Advisor who had a radio show.
Posted by: Petey Greene ()

I believe he died a couple of years ago from a fall in the shower.

Anyway, I used to listen to him and his partner (forgot his name as well) back in the 80's. I think his show came on on Saturdays. I want to think this because I remember listening to him in my vehicle while my kids were at gymnastics practice over in Burke Center.

He may have been with Prudential and I am almost sure that his office was located over at Tysons.

He was a perpetual Bull, betting the full house on all the things America had going for it. I seem to recall that he was calling the Dow to be some 10 times higher than what it was at the time.

In any event, does anyone know the name of the guy whom I'm trying to recall?

Thanks,

Petey

May not be the one you are thinking of but I used to listen to Ric Edelman on WMAL.

As far as I know he and his firm are still with us. Most of my financial decisions had been made by the time I first heard him but it was interesting listening to his advice for other folk.

No, it wasn't Rick Edelman, but thanks for the reply.

Randy Beeman took over for the Prudential guy who died suddenly. Randy's now off to greener pastures, literally. Retired and living on his horse farm and serving s. Consultant

Remember Bruce Williams? He had a syndicated show and was on a couple of local AM stations in the '80s and '90s. He gave all types of financial and quasi legal advice. My dad used to listen every once in a while.

Randy was doing fine in his own right working alongside Rick at Ferris, Baker, Watts (where Rick was when he met a truly untimely demise--I am not sure Randy was at Prudential), but basically hit the lottery with Rick's sudden passing. He soon thereafter jumped to Baird & Co. on the strength of the worth of the portfolios he then oversaw. He was never quite the broker that Rick was, but I am happy that he prospered to the point that he is now retired. He is not all that old.

I remember listening to him in the 1980s. I think he used to be on WRC. I think his show was a bit broader: part investment, part business advice and part legal. I remember once he was talking about his ideal place to set up a business, and all I could think was "But would you want to live in a place like that?"

You are talking about Rick-he was honest and worked hard. Randy Beeman fell into a great spot when Rick passed, but he grew it into a $ making machine for himself that has lost touch with its clients and portfolio management. Beeman was forced into retirement after making a unbelievable error in judgement at work, and now the group in charge has no clue what they are doing. Be careful Petey, you seem like a nice guy.

As you probably have learned, he was Rick Malone. I recall he died from a fall from a ladder. Very sad in any case. I was trying to remember the name of his first colleague, who had a very different view of market analysis. He was a former executive of Fluor, and when he started touting its stock on the air Rick made him issue a public apology. Anyone know who?

I used to listen to him in the 90's. His main investing thesis was the Greatest Financial Story Ever Told, or the simple fact that he believed the market would buoyed by the baby boomers entering their peak earning years of 45 to 55. He generally stuck to financial stocks which were the darlings in the 90's. His favorite was Fannie Mae. So he wasn't hurt by the 2001-2002 bear, but we'll never know how he'd have done in a banking bear market like 2007-2009. He was very bearish on real estate early on, around 2002. Most homes doubled in the next 2-3 years.

I remember hearing Rick committed suicide. I may be wrong.
I listened to him faithfully for many years. Got out of Bear soon
enough to make money. Not so much Fannie.

This is Rick Malone's son, Ty Malone. I'm overjoyed to see my father's words touched so many people...even to this day!

He would have been 60 years old yesterday. And yes, he died from a fall - not suicide.

Thank you for remembering such a special man. :)

Remember Rick Malone very fondly. Became a client in 2002 after listening to him for many years. Rick Malone, Lipman, Beeman, Wightman all now out of the picture but still a client and doing very well.
God speed Rick!

Remember Julius Westheimer on WBAL? He worked in finance as a kid (messenger boy or something) and remembered the 1929 crash and men jumping from windows.

Richard W. Malone (Rick), the 1980s-90s founder of the Wise Investor Group started with Prudential Securities along with Randy Beeman, Greg Smith and others. The Group later moved their client base to Ferris Baker Watts. While at Ferris, Rick lost his life as the result of an accidental fall at home following a Redskin tail-gate event. His morning weekend-Wise Investor show was the "go to" stock market investing highlight event on WMAL for folks in their car. He was a common-sense conservative low multiple investment advisor who believed in America's future and felt that the value of the stock market was still in it's infancy which proved to be correct. He focused a great deal on financial institute investing along with Rail-Roads. He was an antique stock certificate collector. Rick was a dedicated follower of stock-market gurus such as Warren Buffet. Rick had a large following in the DC area. He is still missed.
