TYSONS CORNER, Va. -- A police standoff in Tysons Corner lasted nearly 8 hours but ended with no injuries and the suspect in custody.

The standoff at a 10-story condominium building in a gated community in the heart of Tysons Corner started after police responded to a call at 1:55 a.m. It ended just after 9:30 a.m.

When police responded to the loud music call at a unit at The Rotunda in the 8300 block of Greensboro Drive, the man inside said he would shoot police if they entered the condo.

The threat prompted police to begin negotiations, with the negotiators outside his door.

"The officers that were doing the negotiations were forced to make entry because they thought they did smell something that could possibly have been smoke, but at this point there was not active fire in the apartment," said Fairfax County police spokesman Bud Walker.

Police searched the apartment and said they found two dogs. They declined to discuss anything else found during the search.

Walker says if the police investigation determines there was a health issue involved, the man's identity will not be released. If the man is charged, police will release his identity.

Walker says police don't know whether the man was in his own apartment or someone else's. The man did not have any hostages, Walker said.

Police evacuated three floors of the Rotonda when they smelled "something suspicious that could possibly have been gasoline," Walker said.

The residents were taken to a community center but have been allowed to return to their units.

Greensboro Drive, which had been closed between Westpark and International drives, has reopened.

Sounds like something that would happen in public housing, not a condo. The condo owner must have had a mental breakdown.

I like how they didn't have a warrant and decided to say they smelt smoke even though there wasn't a fire or anything that would make smoke.

Man behind Tysons standoff charged with setting fires
http://www.wtop.com/149/3604015/Man-behind-Tysons-standoff-charged-with-setting-fires

WASHINGTON - A man who spurred the evacuation of a Tysons Corner condominium building faces multiple charges related to the almost eight-hour standoff with police.

Michael Gordon, 62, of McLean, is charged with burning an occupied building, threatening to burn or damage a building and setting a fire that could spread, according to Fairfax County police.

Several fires inside The Rotunda condominum building caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, police say.

Police were called to Greensboro Drive complex, where Gordon lives, about 2 a.m. Tuesday for reports of loud music.

Gordon threatened to shoot police and refused to let them into his apartment. Officers smelled a strong, hazardous odor, which was later identified as an ignitable liquid and is undergoing laboratory testing.

During the negotiations between Gordon and police, officers forced their way into Gordon's apartment believing they had smelled smoke, police said at the time.

Residents from three floors of the building were evacuated for several hours during the standoff with police.

origional story is completely different from newly released story. orig said nothing about smoke which is a point too big to miss.

how would they omit the most compelling parts first time around ? or have they been embelishing ?

amazing how easy it is to make accusations about someone who's quieted and in jail

---------------------
article doesnt' say $10k damages were done by him or on that day

NBC says the man barracaded himself. BUT orig report says he refused to welcome police in.

did police have a warrant ?

i assume not which is why they say they smelled smoke. which wasn't in the original story

orig. article has no complaint of threats. article above says he threatened to burn things

-----------------------------
orig. story and new story are so different as not to be beleived

no one warrant a warrant would put down "music" if fire threats had been made.

but after the fact on a detainment sheet who would put down "music" and not a report ?

it's just not to be believed

How many different charges of setting a fire do you need?
