Were you here last year when an storm came through that hadn't been expected and closed the mixing bowl and locked people on the highway in gridlock for hours?

The plows are out so everyone that is too stupid to stay home in snow don't get stuck and clog the roads. Since most people haven't got a clue how to drive even in clear weather. They may not actually plow anything, in case you haven't noticed, they also drop chemicals to prevent the roads and bridges from freezing.

THe forecast includes some kind of precip every day this week so get used to the plows. THey'll be here all week, I'm sure.

If they weren't then you'd be bitching about why weren't they out when people started wrecking and sliding all over the place.

I've been in NY City when they have failed to plow. It is a fucking fiasco.

my favorite was last week when two days before the inauguration they started spraying down de-icer (expensive, and non damaging to cars, roads) even though there was no snow in the forecast. VDOT/FFXCO both said they would regardless of the forecast.

We treat our [partying] visitors well. Screw the people that actually live, work, and pay taxes here.

Are you talking about actual plowing or salting/sanding?

Several salt/sand truck have plows attached (independents). It's easier to leave the plow attached.

It is absolutely necessary to salt and sand - especially when the snow melts and freezes with traffic, or turns to sleet overnight.

I'm aware of what the GFS was showing, (a slight chance of snow/sleet) 36 hours before the inauguration it tracked ENE.

Correction: I would not be bitching if i slid on a ramp. This is for another thread, but when I am behind the wheel, I am fully responsible for what happens. Granted unless someone else plows into me, then they are responsible. Even then, I accepted that risk by turning the key.

i was only complaining about the special treatment (well intended) after putting up with years of salt and sand damage to my vehicles.

they didnt deploy the plows in 1996, now that was a clusterfuck.

Has anyone been to the Herndon/Monroe Park and Ride/Bus Depot lately? Driving through, one would think they were in Tuzla. The VDOT salt crews must have gathered there for Stolis and just left the spreaders running while they were taking shots.

Plus the state, cities and counties can always apply for "federal disaster relief funds" if we get enough snow during this season to cause them to go over budget.

Herndon started that shit in 1992 or some time around then, after one winter where we had a bunch of snowfalls. They applied for and received disaster relief. I think they didn't even outspend their budget, but somebody in the Herndon Gov't figured out that they could get money from the feds. I think it's become standard practice ever since.

I got dudes at work saying they're not coming in tomorrow alrady... it's pitiful, I just got home on 66, the roads are just wet! Yeah, there's a lot of people around here who just can't deal with the snow. Heck, there are people who have difficulty driving when we get a little sun shower in the spring.

However, it's better that the really inexperienced drivers just stay off the roads. Nothing is more annoying (and dangerous) than approaching a cluster of cars on the highway all bunched up in both lanes going 35 mph when the conditions allow 55 to 60 mph. And they don't even have their hazards on, they're just tooling along, driving next to someone equally as retarded as they are, causing more dangerous conditions than if they would just stick to the prevailing speeds, or at least stick to the right lane like the law proscribes.

As for the slackers, if they are at least smart, they don't call in and say "I'm not going to work today, it snowed". They should call in and say they're working from home, since they really don't have any meetings and can take care of most of what they have to do electronically, but if the boss needs them, they would be willing to come in a little later after the roads have been cleared. It seems to keep the boss happy if you don't appear to just slough off your work because frozen water fell from the sky.

You think it would make sense to use your turn signal to let the cars behind you know that you're going to be slowing down or stopping to make a turn, when the roads are slippery.

Yesterday I didn't go in since I new the after rushhour was going to suck and it wasn't worth it. So, I spend the day on the sofa, with my laptop, checking email occassionally, watching TV.

Today, I wanted a change of scenery rather than staying home. The roads weren't bad at all, just wet - my neighborhood is what sucked. So, flip the SUV to 4WD, get out of the neighborhood, then off to work I go. No traffic, no stress, actually a pleasant drive in. Granted, I have jack shit to do here, but I can see more out my window and there's free donuts in the kitchen.

One time I was working on a big time project when I was employed by a firm in DC. It was a massive snow storm that shut down the Federal Government. The firm called a snow day, but I came in on the Metro because the work really needed to get done and I didn't have a laptop at the time.

Nobody was there except me. Then, the GM, who lived a couple of blocks away, popped in and saw me working. He knew I had a big commute and commented on it. He took off and I thought nothing of it.

During the next Senior Management meeting, he mentioned it to the Executive Team.

Low and behold, the next snow day the firm was closed, all the kiss-ass employees showed up hoping they would get noticed. Did they work? Fuck no. They ordered pizza and screwed around all day.

Once again I was there trying to get work done. It was a huge distraction.

What do you think all those "Vice Presidents" do when they travel? Leave work early on a Tuesday to fly to some city to "visit the client", eat at a nice restaurant Tuesday night on the company dime. Spend 3 hours at the client's office on Wednesday, maybe take the client to lunch on the company's dime, then spend the rest of the day relaxing in the concierge level hotel room the company is paying for, or do a little sightseeing or shopping. Have a nice dinner Wednesday night on the company dime, then retire back to the concierge lounge at the hotel for a few free drinks, and then the next morning fly home and spend the rest of Thursday at home.

My father played that game for the last 10 years before retiring. He really only worked on Mondays and Fridays, and even then he would often take naps on the couch in his office while his secretary told people he was offsite at a meeting or something. Though in defense of that slacker behavior, he salvaged two contracts worth $20 million with the NYC Comptroller and NYC public schools that were almost canceled because the project manager they sent up there was an incompetent fool, simply by spending those 3 hours a week with the clients and making sure their complaints were resolved.

As for goofing off on internet forums, anyone who works in an office spends at least some portion of their day doing "personal" things. I've gone over to the Verizon center and bowled 2 sets of frames at Lucky Strike with my boss a few times when things were really quiet around the office. My boss once took our entire department to see a movie at Union Station, too.

At a previous job, we had one developer who didn't show up for a week and a half. All of his tasks were getting done, he even upgraded the kernel on two of our servers. When he finally showed back up to the office, he had a noticeably darker tan than he normally would have. He had been at the outer banks. But his work was getting done, so everyone laughed about it.

Like you said, if the work is getting done, and money is being made, it doesn't matter how much you goof off.

heard report on WTOP that VA State law says you have to clear ice/snow from all exterior lights, and license plate or you could get pulled over and ticketed.

That's one of the benefits of working with journalists. They are the masters of slackery.

My department doesn't do this (often) but most of the older writers and editors have a few drinks at lunch. Some just don't return to work after lunch.

News services seem to have a tradition of being extremely laid back. I guess it's because it doesn't matter what you do as long as the story is filed on time. So as long as our projects are completed on time, as long as the websites and newsfeeds are functioning, nobody cares what we do.

Half the people in my department have slingbox. I just use it to keep CNN muted on my second monitor, but some people host little movie or sporting event "viewing parties" right in their cubicles. March Madness is like a no-go time for starting new projects or launching anything.

At my previous job, the Tax Editor was Irish, and every St. Patrick's day, around 2pm, he'd send a company-wide email inviting everyone down to his office for drinks. He'd have several coolers full of irish beers and several bottles of irish whiskey. Even the President and the Chairman of the board would come to that little party.
