State police say a 7-year-old girl “miraculously” suffered only minor injuries early Sunday when she was thrown from her family’s Ford Expedition into a ditch, with the SUV dangling over her, during a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 95 in Springfield.
The Expedition was traveling south at the 166 mile marker about 5:30 a.m. when it collided with another vehicle. The impact forced the SUV to run off the right side of the road and overturn in the ditch.
A 7-year-old girl was ejected as the SUV overturned, and landed in a culvert, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
The Expedition landed on top, straddling the culvert, Geller said.
Once the SUV was removed, the girl was able to crawl out of the culvert on her own. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries and didn’t have to go to the hospital, Geller said.
The driver, a 34-year-old Maryland woman, and her four other passengers suffered only minor injuries and were treated also at the scene, Geller said.
The second vehicle in the crash left the scene before police arrived.
“At this time, nobody in the Expedition is able to provide a description of the suspect vehicle,” Geller said.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is asked to call state police at 703-803-0026.
All lanes of I-95 south reopened by 8 a.m.
