LIBTARD ALERT

Sen Tim Kaine wants all Americans t forefit their right to bear arms...

Fort Hood shooting renews Capitol Hill debate over guns, defense spending

The recent fatal shooting at Fort Hood has sparked new Capitol Hill debate about gun control and the defense budget, with Democrats and Republicans suggesting a possible increase in federal spending to make U.S. military bases safer.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told “Fox News Sunday” he would consider rolling back the sharp cuts through sequestration and would consider increasing the federal budget.

“No blank checks, but sure,” said Kaine, who expressed concern about the “nexus of mental health and gun laws.”

Congress last year considered tightening federal gun laws, including mental health checks for potential buyers, but passed no significant legislation.

Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, pointed out Sunday the defense budget President Obama proposed last month would downsize the Army to pre-WWII troop numbers.

However, he told Fox News that Congress should “review and analyze” base policies to better secure them -- following the shootings Wednesday at the Fort Hood military base in Texas where an emotionally anguished Spc. Ivan Lopez purportedly used his own handgun to fatally shoot three people and wound 16 others before killing himself.

The incident follows the Sept. 2013 attack at the Washington Navy Yard in which defense contractor Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist, entered the facility and fatally shot 12 people and injured three others before he was shot and killed by police.

In 2009, Army Maj. Nidal Hasan opened fire inside Fort Hood, killing 13 and injuring more than 30 others. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, for sentenced to death in August 2013 for the rampage, which was the deadliest in history inside a U.S. military base.

McCaul suggested leaders on bases -- officers and senior enlisted personnel -- be allowed to carry guns.

“They defend us overseas, yet they’re defenseless at bases,” he told Fox News, referring to a Defense Department policy limiting firearms on military bases. “When these things happen … it doesn’t take very long to kill a lot of people.”

Military leadership said after the shootings this week that it stands by its policy of not allowing people to carry their personal weapons on bases.

Kane also called for tighter perimeter security at bases.

Mr. Kaine, I hate to tell you, but maybe you should take some time to read the Constitution? Instead, you want to try and make news and appear like your party is being effective. Why don't you focus on the real issues and the real priorities for America, and not those that are manufactured by you and your party?

First, you want to be able to ward off those who would visit violence on you and your families.

Now, you are concerned that U.S. Senators will work with the administration to further infringe on your right to keep and bear arms ... all in the name of keeping crazies away from guns.

What a bunch of loons you are.

I don't want to be able to defend myself from bad people.

I do not want anyone else to be able to defend themselves from depredation by bad people. (After all, the confidence you exude ... apparent when you're assessed as a potential target by the societal predators looking for easy prey ... makes more likely that you will earn 'a pass,' and I will become a victim.)

Guns can never be 'equalizers.' Women don't deserve to be able to be armed. If someone tries to rape the woman, she should blow a whistle. Or scream for help.

Guns are always evil death-machines. They should be outlawed.

You loons need to realize, when seconds count, a cop is only minutes away. They will write up a report, likely catch the bad guy(s), and pat themselves on the back about the wonderful job they've done.

The cops are the only protection anyone could ever need.

Unless you're unlucky. An if you're unlucky, just grin and bear it. Like Dr. Petit did.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimpowell/2013/09/04/what-should-you-do-if-youre-threatened-by-a-mass-murderer/

Calling 911 isn’t enough.

"On July 23, 2007, two men invaded the Cheshire, Connecticut home of Dr. William Petit Jr., his wife Jennifer Hawke-Petit and their daughters 11-year-old Michaela and 17 year-old Hayley. There wasn’t a gun in the house that could have been used to ward off the attackers. They savagely beat Dr. Petit and then left him to focus on the others. He managed to call 911. The attackers tied the girls to their beds. Jennifer was raped and strangled, the girls were sexually abused, then the place was doused with gasoline and torched.

Incredibly, police who arrived at the scene didn’t go straight into the house. They were said to have stood around outside for about 25 minutes, and there were off-the-record reports of screams from the house during that time. After having committed three murders, the men tried to escape, and police caught them outside.

(Read the rest at the link)

Who's loonier?

Those who take resposibility to be able to safeguard themselves, their family ... and who are concerned about 'brigands' cherry-picking the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and public laws?

Those who believe bad things never happen to good people ... or believe everyone should just 'play the odds.'

Why did you have to use an example from 2007? Are home break-ins involving personal injury and death so uncommon that this was the most recent one you could come up with? Sounds like another case of transparent exaggeration and emotional scare tacics to me. Those are the tools of the totally dishonest. I'm going to say that either you are just another ignorant lying right-wing dipshit fucktard or you have haplessly fallen for the propaganda deceptions of one.

I think the method of turning on the front porch light and watching the thug scram might be a better option. Wait! Forget the light, I want something that will go through the door and take the thug out.

All of you who oppose weapons keep citing how they were used in an offensive manner. Those moments are truly unfortunate. On the other hand, the largest portion of people just have weapons for their own defense. Have you thought for a single second how bad crime might be in America if America were disarmed? It's an awfully good deterrent if a criminal has to make some thoughts whether the crime they're going to commit might be their last - depending if the victim is armed or not. Granted, all don't have those thoughts as some criminals will always be just that - criminals. But, for the others, it's a great deterrent.

Imagine that ... guns are actually keeping down crime in America so we can live a bit more peacefully. Instead, you want to point out a few sad incidents and over-embellish them for your own political gain. Pathetic!

Having a gun in the home increases the chances of your dying from a gunshot wound by a factor of almost four. Guns raise the risks. They do not lower them. Those are the facts, not the macho-macho fairy-tale bullshit that gun-nuts so love to wallow in.

"Chesterfield County Police were called to a home on the 12500 block of Little Pond Lane in Midlothian just after 3 a.m. on March 17 for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. After a botched burglary attempt, the suspect shot Farzad Sultani in the head. The victim was been transported to Johnston-Willis Hospital, where he passed away. Others were home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured.

The suspect, who allegedly got in through the backdoor of the home, managed to escape, and police are currently conducting a massive search in the area. Chesterfield Police told ABC 8News Reporter Sydney Cameron that the area is “not safe” while they continue to search for the suspect. The scene remains active, and police expect to continue canvassing the area for several hours."

Roman S. Monzon, 19, Mark A. Hoy, Jr., 19, and John A. Dey, 19, are charged with breaking and entering to commit robbery, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and abduction. Law enforcement from several jurisdictions worked together to apprehend the suspects.

WASHINGTON - Loudoun County authorities say there are four suspects in a home invasion April 16 and have released sketches of two of them.

Deputies responded to a home in the 13400 block of Loyalty Road in the area of Taylorstown, Va., at about 11:30 a.m. Residents told authorities a man knocked on the door and said he had a delivery, and then forced his way into the home along with three other suspects.

The suspects reportedly had a weapon and removed items from the home while the family of five, which included two small children, was held against their will. After the suspects left, a family member was able to call authorities. No one was injured.

Sheriff's officials say the suspects are two white males and two black males, and they may be driving a gold or tan Nissan SUV -- possibly a 2003 Murano."

Samantha Johnson, 24, of Moyock, North Carolina, turned herself in Monday. She was wanted on outstanding indictments for abduction, robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and breaking and entering.

Jeffrey D. Salsgiver of the Chesapeake was arrested Monday afternoon by Portsmouth Police for the same outstanding indictments. He was indicted on these charges March 6 by a Portsmouth Grand Jury and is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.

Both are charged in connection with an October 2 home invasion in the 3900 block of Long Point Boulevard in Portsmouth. When officers arrived at the home that night, they found a 29-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back — he was one of four masked suspects who entered the home with weapons and tried to rob the victims. There’s a high probability that police cannot stop the killer in time to save you." That might've been a better quote for the article.

The same conclusion, of course, applies when instead of mass-murder 'just' a single murder takes place.

Those that choose to obviate their personal responsibility .... and wallow in their own heightened sense of remorse as they confront what they should've, could've, and would've done differently ... try to expiate their feelings by advocating for gun control. This way, their personal choices to ignore risks and their individual capabilities ... and thereby let societal predators determine outcomes ... can be more easily rationalized.

I (am) all for restrictions on the actions of mental patients. In this regard, I again raise the ire of liberals and civil-libertarians, who would rather "make insane proof" all aspects of society ... like they made "child proof" all closures to products that children can abuse. (Perish the thought that they might try to legislate parental responsibility for the acts of their children.)

.

From October 30, 1984
http://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/30/science/how-release-of-mental-patients-began.html

"HOW RELEASE OF MENTAL PATIENTS BEGAN
By RICHARD D. LYONS

THE policy that led to the release of most of the nation's mentally ill patients from the hospital to the community is now widely regarded as a major failure. Sweeping critiques of the policy, notably the recent report of the American Psychiatric Association, have spread the blame everywhere, faulting politicians, civil libertarian lawyers and psychiatrists.

But who, specifically, played some of the more important roles in the formation of this ill-fated policy? What motivated these influential people and what lessons are to be learned?

A detailed picture has emerged from a series of interviews and a review of public records, research reports and institutional recommendations. The picture is one of cost-conscious policy makers, who were quick to buy optimistic projections that were, in some instances, buttressed by misinformation and by a willingness to suspend skepticism.

Many of the psychiatrists involved as practitioners and policy makers in the 1950's and 1960's said in the interviews that heavy responsibility lay on a sometimes neglected aspect of the problem: the overreliance on drugs to do the work of society.

The records show that the politicians were dogged by the image and financial problems posed by the state hospitals and that the scientific and medical establishment sold Congress and the state legislatures a quick fix for a complicated problem that was bought sight unseen."

.

Liberals and civil-libertarians conveyed the rights associated with adult citizenship on children. Without the concomitant responsibility for their actions, these liberties have become a license to do as the child pleases, with no fear of meaningful repercussions. (Ask any teacher!)

Liberals and civil-libertarians conveyed the rights associated with adult citizenship on patients in mental institutions (then), and all of the insane (now). For this reason we have to change our Nation? To accommodate sickos?

No thanks!

Using the same old false stats like that and getting shot down (no pun intended) over and over is a big part of why your side always fails in this debate.

Just for yucks, why not look at the article linked below. It's got an interactive map with which it might be fun to play.

.

http://www.cato.org/guns-and-self-defense
"Guns and Self Defense

Gun control proponents want legislation that will restrict access to firearms. The rationale for such legislation is to reduce accidental shootings and the criminal use of guns against people. But if harm reduction is the goal, policymakers should pause to consider how many crimes--murders, rapes, assaults, robberies--are thwarted by ordinary persons who were fortunate enough to have access to a gun. Gun control proponents cannot deny that people use guns successfully against criminals, but they tend to play down how often such events take place. The purpose of this map is to draw more attention to this aspect of the firearms policy debate.

Two additional points are worth noting. First, the map is not comprehensive. Criminals will often flee the scene when they discover that their intended target has a gun. With no shots fired, no injuries, and no suspect in custody, news organizations may report nothing at all. Thus, it is important to remember that news reports can only provide us with an imperfect picture of defensive gun use in America. Second, when a citizen is able to shoot an attacker or hold a rapist or robber until the police arrive, it is very likely that more than one crime has been prevented because if the culprit had not been stopped, he could have targeted other citizens as well. The bottom line is that gun owners stop a lot of criminal mayhem every year."

.

Hoping this helps with the education of those interested in learning truths.

If instead, you would rather continue bloviating about how bad firearms are ...

and how loony those are who own and/or carry firearms, openly or concealed ...

Well that is one of your Constitutionally warranted freedoms, as enumerated in the Bill of Rights.

While you rail about how bad you find this aspect of the United States of America, do think about how despots cling to power using their armed police and military forces ... in the face of outraged citizenry, armed with sticks, rocks and molotov cocktails.

Or, maybe automobiles should be banned too? Somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 deaths from auto accidents each year. Now, those numbers are a bit scary. Plus, those numbers are from the past so we'll have to wait a few years until the stats start to reflect the texting craze while driving. At that point, the deaths might reach 45,000 per year. That issue is something we all should be focusing on ... but, NO? Why not?

As president Thomas Jefferson once said:" To take away the citizens is in very much retribution as taking the citizens food, clothing, and lodging".

That's because you are a pitiful right-wing ASSHOLE and coward who runs around in fear of highly improbable things. Armed invasions of occupied dwellings are extremely rare. Actual thieves want to steal stuff. They do not at all want to run into freaked-out whacko lunatics, whether those are armed or not. That doesn't contribute to their cause at all. Garden variety, NRA-programmed lying fucktard! There are all sorts of laws protecting children and others against the risks of accidental pool drownings. That's part of why they too are so rare. The vast majority of accidental drownings actually occurs in natural bodies of water among those who cannot swim and under circumstances where no supervision was available. But because you are a total loser yahoo dumbfuck, you wouldn't know anything at all about any of that, would you? And are you ready given all this gun carnage that goes on all the time to see at last some laws put in place to protect the rest of us from being accidentally shot by you fucking gun-nut assholes? Fucking gun deaths are not rare at all, you know. They are fucking commonplace. GUNS = DEATH. Get that much at least through your useless little asshole head.

That's because most of them are made up nonsense. People heard a noise in the garage. They unwisely grabbed a gun and went to investigate. It was only a hungry racoon prowling about, but that's not much of a story so guess what it gets turned into. The NRA gleefully and uncritically buys all this self-reported slop and hooey and then pumps it into the heads of the truly dim among us. The FBI logs about 250 cases of justifiable homicide each year. If NRA reports of successful defensive gun use were accurate, the number would have to be about a thousand times that.

They're not at all rare. Far more common than firearms-related death/injury.

Quote

Unintentional Drowning: Get the Facts

Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States.1

How big is the problem?

From 2005-2009, there were an average of 3,533 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. An additional 347 people died each year from drowning in boating-related incidents.2

About one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.2 For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.1

More than 50% of drowning victims treated in emergency departments (EDs) require hospitalization or transfer for further care (compared with a hospitalization rate of about 6% for all unintentional injuries).1,2 These nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functioning (e.g., permanent vegetative state).3,4

Who is most at risk?

Males: Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male.2

Children: Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In 2009, among children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died from drowning.1,2 Among children ages 1 to 4, most drownings occur in home swimming pools.2 Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies (birth defects).1 Among those 1-14, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes.1

Minorities: Between 2005 and 2009, the fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was significantly higher than that of whites across all ages.2 The disparity is widest among children 5-14 years old. The fatal drowning rate of African American children ages 5 to 14 is almost three times that of white children in the same age range.2

Factors such as access to swimming pools, the desire or lack of desire to learn how to swim, and choosing water-related recreational activities may contribute to the racial differences in drowning rates. Available rates are based on population, not on participation. If rates could be determined by actual participation in water-related activities, the disparity in minorities’ drowning rates compared to whites would be much greater.5

Yup, about 3.500 per year, with the vast majority occurring in natural bodies of water, not in swimming pools. And that compares to more than 30,000 annual deaths from gunshot wounds and more that 150,000 annually wounded. Because of the scope of internal damage done by bullets as they fragment and then tumble and ricochet around inside the body, gunshot wounds are among the most expensive of all injuries to treat. GUNS = DEATH. And higher health care costs. It's that fucking simple, stupid.

It's not my story, you know. This is the "resistance to tyranny" delusion that all these gun-toter types so love to bandy about. They somehow don't see the complete inanity of it, but that wouldn't really be hard to understand, given the absurd nature of their entire body of beliefs. Bunch of hopeless low-grade pinheads.

Nope, I just pointed out that you're full of shit. You cited a stat, either back your shit up or STFU.

I already proved you wrong re pool drownings above, but I'll give you the numbers just to rub it in your face again.

10 leading causes of death by age group, CDC, 2010

Age 1-4
Unintentional Drowning 436 (#1 cause)
Homicide Firearm 43

Age 5-9
Unintentional Drowning 134 (#2 cause)
Homicide Firearm 58

Age 10-14
Unintentional Drowning 117 (#3 cause)
Homicide Firearm 107

Accidental/Unintended deaths involving firearms are far more rare. They don't even make the list other than for ages 10-14 at about 26/year. Again, far more rare than drowning.

There is nothing new there, Dopey. It's all the same bogus argument that the NRA has been trying to pass off for years. Only the easily-manipulated and truly ignorant buy into it. Looks like you're both.

So, it's your belief that homicide is the only way to die from a gunshot wound??? My god, you REALLY ARE a dumbfuck, aren't you! And what's the shtick with 10-14 year olds all of a sudden? Dying from a gunshot wound means you're deat at whatever age. It's almost like you're desperately grasping at straws and deliberate corruptions and distortions. You've skyrocketed school costs and unionized gov which now decides it's own pay, Mr Kaine.

Your only hope is to stalk the people who were the target of your pyramid schemes.

Come on, toadie. THe FBI does not collect any of the worthless apocryphal and anecdotal data that the NRA and such groups rely on in coming up with their wildly inflated claims for successful defensive use of guns (against pesky racoons).

You're the one who was claiming that pool deaths among children were rare and far less frequent than firearms-related deaths. All I did was to prove that you don't know WTF you're talking about.

The numbers I gave aren't from the NRA. They're from the CDC and Consumer Products Safety Commission.

Sorry.

Um, no dummy, you're just too stupid to understand.

As I said, those are intentional deaths. Accidental deaths, which were the subject starting above with your bullshit stat above re being 4X more likely to die due to a gun in the home and the danger to children, are counted separately.

For ages 0-1, 1-4 and 5-9, accidental firearms-related deaths are so infrequent that they don't even make the top 10. Versus drownings, contrary to your claim otherwise, the vast majority being pools which are the the #1, #2, and #3 causes. The only group where they show up at all, in 10th place, is among those 10-14. All being far below the number of pool deaths.

Again, sorry that you're clueless.

Tsk, tsk ... I am disappointed in you.

Please reread my book.

And take the contents to heart. Winning over the hearts and minds of those yet to have become useful idiots can be difficult. But don't let your frustration show. You will continue to get your paycheck, so put a little bit more effort into your posts. Here's how your efforts look so far, with respect to many of my key tenets.

“Never go outside the expertise of your people.” FAIL Regretably, you've been schooled whenever you try to use statistics. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.” FAIL Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” FAIL. Mindless cursing is not ridicule. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“A good tactic is one your people enjoy.” SUCCEED You guys enjoy cursing and attacking. Unless used in moderation, however, it becomes easy to dismiss. So this is only a qualified success. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.” SUCCEED But this would be better if I could have written, FAIL. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” SUCCEED But it is much more effective when the pressure actually counters the logic used by the enemy.

"The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition." SUCCEED You, or y'all do go on. And on. And on. Sometimes it's more effective to assess your 'pressure' from a macro perspective, rather than replying to everything. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

“If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.” FAIL But this is to be expected, as we lay the groundwork for our change. Don't lose heart, and please reread the ENTIRE book.

“The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” FAIL But this is to be expected, as we have no real constructive alternative. The goal is power ... and force. An armed populace tends to resist servitude. Don't lose heart, and please reread the ENTIRE book.

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” FAIL. Mindless cursing doesn't meet this goal. Please reread the ENTIRE book.

God, you're one gullible goober, aren't you. As you should have been taught in about the fifth grade, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. But the falsehoods don't arise from the numbers themselves. They come from the low-life lying scumbags (NRA, GOA, etc.) who deliberately and habitually distort and misrepresent those numbers. You need either to get lots, lots smarter or to pay lots, lots better attention, but I'm guessing that the probability of either one is really kind of low.

As has already been noted, the FBI does NOT collect any of the phony data concerning supposedly successful defensive gun uses that the NRA shouts about from the rooftops. Those claims are based on gun-owner reported bullshit that is simply taken at face value. Such results don't even qualify as statitics. And much of this nonsense in fact traces back to a single mid-1990's article that used survey results from the 1980's. The numbers are both flawed AND outdated. Could be you're just plain too dumb to understand the implications of that, so I will explain to you that it means those numbers are completely useless garbage. No actual researcher would ever rely on them, but the NRA champions them. That's due to their latent and pervasive dishonesty.

There are of course actual FBI data for justifiable homicides. While the NRA et al. claim multiple millions of successful defensive gun uses each year, there are typically about 250 justifiable homicides recorded annually, some few of which actually do arise from gun-owners legitimately if quite foolishly trying to defend themselves. These same folks more often end up getting themselves killed of course, and in the meantime, they are mistakenly killing off other innocent people at rates many times higher than that. GUNS = DEATH. Having a gun in your home increases the chances of your dying from a gunshot wound by a factor of nearly four. Just sayin'.

[More later if at some point I find another few minutes to waste on you hapless fucktards.]

Life's mysteries.
------------------------

Not a mystery-

“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country.”
- Adolf Hitler, dinner talk on April 11, 1942
Nazi Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------
“If the opposition disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves.”
- Joseph Stalin
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. By 1987 that figure had risen to 61,911,000.
========================
“The measures adopted to restore public order are: First of all, the elimination of the so-called subversive elements. … They were elements of disorder and subversion. On the morrow of each conflict I gave the categorical order to confiscate the largest possible number of weapons of every sort and kind. This confiscation, which continues with the utmost energy, has given satisfactory results.”
- Benito Mussolini, address to the Italian Senate, 1931

============================
“All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party.”
- Mao Tze Tung, Nov 6 1938
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952 10,076,000 political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated in Kuomintang China, and by 1987 another 35,236,000 exterminations were carried out under the Communists.
======================
“I did not join the resistance movement to kill people, to kill the nation. Look at me now. Am I a savage person? My conscience is clear.”
- Pol Pot

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. Between 1975 and 19793, 2,035,000 “educated” people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

During the short four years of its rule in Cambodia, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge government murdered over 31 percent of the entire Cambodian population.

Wrong again. The FBI, as well as the BJS, the CDC, and various state agencies do in fact collect the data. That includes via the UCS, NCVS, and WISQARS databases among others.

And in fact many 'actual researchers' do use these data. Including the recent National Research Council report which said:

Quote

Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010). On the other hand, some scholars point to a radically lower estimate of only 108,000 annual defensive uses based on the National Crime Victimization Survey (Cook et al., 1997).

And noted:

Quote

Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was “used” by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies (Kleck, 1988; Kleck and DeLone, 1993; Southwick, 2000; Tark and Kleck, 2004).

Justifiable homicides are understood to represent only a subset of all legally committed homicides (due to definition and limited by reporting) and represent a far smaller number within the context of justifiable shootings. And a further very small subset of all defensive uses of firearms. In the same way that homicides are a very small subset of all violent crimes. But even using that as the basis, it implies a far larger number of defensive uses of a firearm (as above).

Furthermore, even limiting the scope to justifiable homicides you're again wrong. The total is higher and the number of uses by private citizens are not "some few." Of the 665 justifiable homicides in 2010, law enforcement officers justifiably killed 387. Private citizens justifiably killed 278. That is, over 40% of justifiable homicides were by private citizens protecting themselves.

READING FOR REDNECKS

# Xpat_lib 2013-01-23 09:47
John, a reading of the Shay's Rebellion will teach you about why Washington felt it was necessary to enact the 2nd Amendment. Shay and other farmers were protesting what they saw as unfair taxation after the war. Their revolt against the new government also threatened a military armory and, because there was no formal standing army at the time, Washington had to form a militia to stop them. As such, one can read the 2nd, not as intending to take over a tyrannical U.S. Government, but as a defense against rebellion from WITHIN as well as from foreign intervention - such as the British, at the time. Since militias, either State or Federal, are necessary any longer, the 2nd hardly makes sense in today's society. The framers never meant the Constitution to be chipped in stone. It was meant to be evolving to fit the times.

+16 # NOMINAE 2013-01-23 15:53
@Xpat_lib

Your argument is cogent, coherent, and logically unassailable.

Therefore, be prepared to repeat it ad infinitum. These frightened little men who need military hardware to feel safe dashing down the the local 7-11 for some slim jims and beer will NEVER engage in rational debate.

Guns compensate for their sense of inadequacy, which is based in primal fear. They are the people to whom Samuel Colt was advertizing in the 1800s when he introduced his famous Colt .45 as "The Great Equalizer".

These men know of nothing that compensates for their sense of inadequacy, and their insatiable need for power, like a gun.

Therefore, be prepared to hear the SAME bullshit "counter-argume nts" out of them in perpetuity, no matter HOW many times their "arguments" are successfully refuted, and shown to be just plain transparent and lame little lies.

There IS a place for guns in this Country, and in this Society. Living on a *very* remote ranch in Wyoming, I would never have been able to effectively operate the place without access to a shotgun, or a rifle.

There is, however, only ONE place for Military Weaponry. In the MILITARY. Period.

Unfortunately arguing this position is like trying to talk a junkie out of their next fix. They are not ABLE to hear you, and they WILL repeat all of the tired, useless, fully debunked helpless idiocy they have ever heard like a mantra in favor of sustaining their addiction.

Best of luck talking to a wall.

+23 # Todd Williams 2013-01-23 10:55
I've hears these bogus arguments for years and I'm telling you they are scurrilous, baseless and just plain stupid. I won't waste the kilobytes here to refute these wornout attacks on arms control. Let it suffice to say that purveyors of this ridiculous train of thought are not only ignorant and paranoid, but dangerous as well.

+5 # ER444 2013-01-23 12:45
So what you are saying here, for example, is that anyone who feels "oppressed" by government should rise in armed rebellion. Can you imagine the "Occupy" movement in New York's Central Park. The police move in to eject them (which I by the way found horribly wrong and a severe broach of the constitutional right to free speech) The protesters all pull out their semi-automatic weapons and start a gun fight with the NYPD. Hey, John Boy, that is totally insane. You are inciting civil war here. Martin Luther King unwittingly gave his life to support the civil rights movement which through peaceful methods accomplished wonders in the 60s. Jesus Christ, whom most of you gun freaks claim to be your prophet was also a peacenick and would abhore your aggressive and ridiculous proposal to arm the public with military style weapons. One more point, every state has a "militia" it is called the National Guard. If you want to fulfill your macho dreams enlist and then you can carry all the heavy guns you want, who knows maybe you could even get a free paid vacation to Afghanistan.

The Second Amendment provides for private space flight companies getting together with private tactical nuke manufacturers so everyone can match the government's firepower.

Sounds fabulous...when everyone has a rocket and a nuke, we will have a new era of freedom, security and politeness. Who wants to piss off a guy with a nuke tipped rocket?

Let's assume for the moment that I've also swallowed your right-wing koolaid... it's fun to think about the rich elites arming their private jets with cluster bombs, and napalm, and nukes. Let's imagine wall st execs (or local business/crimel ords) & celebrities traveling in motorcades with blackwater mercs (or whatever such criminals call themselves now) with .50 cals shooting at everyone. or private elite "communities" with private armies and stealth bombers. talk about the rise of right-wing terrorism!
What a great example of "the jungle metaphor", survival of the fittest will really be who can afford the best weaponry. The elite would like nothing more than for the right wing-nuts to turn this country into somalia while they live in dubai.

Today costumed goons will come to your door for protesting or even petitioning your government, and great men like Bradley Manning rot in jail. However, you and your neighbors with your hand held weapons, cannot make a dent in the police state. You are so out gunned you might as well shoot yourself. However, the most feared man to the terrorists who bring you the security state was Martin Luther King. Their weapons are not useful when a man like King or Ghandi can bring the masses into the street. They solved the problem by having King hit. No number of gunmen could have prevented that. We need more Martin Luther Kings.

Agree, but the purpose of a well-regulated militia was not to protect the state against the federal government, it was to protect the country in lieu of having and housing standing armies throughout the states.

Personally, I'm glad to see Yoho inadvertently expose the idiocy of the pro-gun rationale to all of America — lay it all out there and show us just how crazy you really are, Yoho.

AND FINALLY

# BradFromSalem 2013-01-23 09:56
Absoljutely correct. There were two drivers that convinced Madison and others to scrap the Articles Of Confederation and replace it with the US Constitution. First was the internal difficulties of interstate competition and multiple currencies. Second was the weakness that the Confederation showed in dealing with Shay's Rebellion.
What the Constitution did was not to empower citizens to rise up in revolt, it was to allow the government to suppress a revolt. The 2nd amendment extended that authority to the states as well as the federal government.
As I have stated before, and President Obama alluded to the same thing in his 2nd Inaugaral Address was that as conditions change, the Constitution as designed can change or be changed as well. Abraham Lincoln called it an Organic Document making the same point.

So, you gun nutties, it is not 1791; nor is it 1860; it is 2013. Please look at the Constitution through the prism of today's world, and amazingly; even the 2nd Amendment still fits. It may no longer be necessary, but it is not a hinderence to maintaining a secure state. And when anyone can get a 100 round automatic weapon and tear up little innocent children, mow down a gathering in a movie theater, or purchase a hand gun and take a random shot at someone's head we are NOT secure.

Why thank you, you are so kind. Why reinvent the wheel and get it wrong like you? What these posters are saying was quite nicely done, and more than likely better than what I have time to put to pen. But you go right ahead and tear down the messenger instead of arguing your point. It is so much easier that way, don't you think?

Dude, do you have hobbies other than so regularly proving yourself to be nothing more than a monumentally brain-washed but otherwise completely impervious dumbfuck? You seriously need to buy a vowel here as you are literally operating without either a net or a clue.

Let's recap...

All this swimming pool nonsense is YOUR phony sideshow, the entire worthless lot of it having been dredged up as nothing but a grotesque, dishonest, childish, and cowardly smokescreen -- something created by deliberately dishonest right-wing propaganda-mongers in a desperate attempt to delude mindless assholes and divert attention away from the cold, stark, and actual facts of widespread gunfire-related injury, death, and destruction. These wimpishly ignorant claims of yours are nothing but rotting, stinking dead fish flung by their right-wing handlers to pods of worthless trained-seal dumbfucks such as yourself who eagerly slurp them up and spit them back out again. Only pathetic incoherent losers actually swallow this sort of lame-ass claptrap, but you were fucking first in line for seconds on this sewage, weren't you? What an utterly worthless, mindless fucktard.

BOTTOM LINE: Your adventure here has amounted to nothing more than one pathetic loser's lame-ass ignorant descent into manufactured deflection and obfuscation, something swallowed whole by a worthless, incompetent, shit-for-brains, right-wing, limpdick asshole too dumb to realize that he was being caged, force-fed, and fostered by the deceitful foot-soldiers of such fact-free feedlots as FOX News, the NRA, and the Heritage Foundation. Congratulations on being so easily pwned by these scumbag liars, you pathetic dumbass. What an entirely worthless piece of crap you amount to.

Back in the real world that you have no awareness of, there are about 10 deaths per day attributable to drowning, most of them occuring in bathtubs, horse troughs, and various natural bodies of water, not in home swimming pools. This is because home swimming pools are actually among the safest possible places to swim, what with their having been designed and installed with safety standards in mind, plus the typical proximity of such pools to adult supervision, and of course the fact that those who own and use home pools are among the most likely people in the world to have completed swimming, first aid, and CPR classes. The eyes of the dumbfucks have just glazed over.

Meanwhile, there are nearly 500 victims of gunshot wounds every day, all of them occuring as the result of someone's having been shot with a fucking gun. Many of those victims had nothing to do with a gun themselves. They were shot anyway. No one ever drowned because someone else went swimming. About 85 of all those daily gunshot victims meanwhile die as the result of them. Yesterday, today, tomorrow Every fucking day, asshole. And about half the victims who don't die are so severely injured as to require transportation to a hospital emergency room. They face expensive treatment, then lengthy and typically painful periods of recovery. So again, among a range of awful outcomes, that's 85 outright dead people per day as the result of gunshot wounds versus 2 or perhaps 3 at the outside that might be associated with home swimming pools. Which one is rare, asshole. Which one isn't. And who is the deluded, manipulated, ignorant, simplistic, uninformed, low-life, scum-sucking, dumbass, fucktard, asshole who just can't tell?

LOL!!! You might want to beg, borrow, or steal something more than what your allowance will cover and invest that in some remedial reading classes.

"Having a gun in the home increases the chances of your dying from a gunshot wound by a factor of almost four."

There is nothing in there about intentional or unintentional or about adults versus children. Stupid worthless dumbfuck. All of that irrelevant nonsense is simply YOU desperately trying to stuff irrelevant things in there in assholish and doomed-to-humiliating-failure attempts to pretend that the cold, hard facts of the real world don't actually exist. You are just peeing on yourself here, loser.

GUNS = DEATH

It's necessary as an attention-grabbing device when dealing with those of an IQ of less than 80 or so, a cohort that comprises the entirety of the right-wing brigade of utter assholes, including of course the various dumbfucks and disturbed gun-nut imbeciles who have lately been posting in this particular thread.

I'm sorry, you were running away so fast that the sound waves were elongated into indecipherability. You appear not to have anything of any intelligence at all to offer here. Please clarify and explain yourself if you believe this not to be the case.

LOL! You wouldn't know a standard deviation if one walked up and slapped you in the face. The right-wing subsists on a diet of flat-out statistical lies, distortions, and other fabrications as concocted by the corrupt disinformation media. You know who they are. You no doubt have browser bookmarks leading to half a dozen of them. As transparent as these jokers are, any person of reasonable intelligence would quickly recognize their lies. But you and all these other goobers are not of reasonable intelligence at all, so you don't. This makes you an asshole. Nice going.
