A multistage operation is under way in the Pacific Ocean to bring a 1-year-old-girl who became seriously ill on a sailboat hundreds of miles off Mexico to shore for treatment, officials said Saturday. On Thursday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call about the girl, who was on the Rebel Heart with her parents and a sibling about 900 miles off Mexico. According to their blogs, Eric Kaufman and his wife, Charlotte, had plans to cross the Pacific and had left Mexico two weeks ago with their daughters Cora and 1-year-old Lyra, reports CNN affiliate KGTV. The family lives in San Diego. Members of an Air National Guard unit operating out of Moffett Federal Airfield in the Bay Area were dispatched, according to a spokesman. Four members of the 129th Rescue Wing parachuted into the ocean, inflated a motorized boat and reached the 36-foot sailboat, said 2nd Lt. Roderick B. Bersamina. The child is in stable condition; the rescuers will stay with her until they reach a doctor, Bersamina said Saturday. Officials said they can't give details about the illness, but said, "the family is in good spirits." A Navy frigate will intercept the Rebel Heart some time Saturday. After meeting with the frigate, "the pararescuemen and the family will be loaded on a helicopter, and they'll fly to the most appropriate medical facility," Bersamina said. A "pararescueman" is a combination of a paramedic and a Navy SEAL, the spokesman said...

That is what America is all about and we should be glad we have those things.

Do you know ho wmuch money is spent on training missions, just flying here and there, having boats go here and there, doing all kinds of training for these kinds of missions?

Consider this a training mission, with real results.

Feel better?

That's a good point - these guys should be utilized for saving lives as much as possible considering how much is spent to train them. Questionable move bringing a 1 year old along. This definitely belongs on the list of things you do before or without kids, especially right after they're born.

Cross the Pacific in a sailboat? Fuck yeah. These people have got some real big balls. Fuck all this fear of everything.

Back to the original question, these agencies pay their employees salary regardless of what they do and would probably use most of those resources anyway.

Threads like these point out the real problem here --- endless, reckless government spending.

I'd say this is one of the few places where the spending is justified.

The high value given to life is what makes the USA a great country.

Save the 1 year old baby and her sister. Bill the parents and maybe even let them both do some time for this. Crazy reckless.

like all boaters and adventurers they all should be required to purchase insurance for rescue to pay for these costs. That is what they do with Mt. Climbing in Europe and it works. I climb and gladly pay insurance for rescue. If you can afford the costs of crossing the pacific in a sailboat a few k insurance is nothing.

Instead we foot the 250k rescue bill. oh well glad she is okay.

they are advertising spending of your money to give you public notice it's gone. if you accept, it will actually be taken.

hundreds of miles off Mexico

Mexico has a large navy. and spanish are more well known for skills on the seas than americans.

Point: how is it hillary and obama are claiming a need to spend a wad on this ?

And how is Mexico denying a charge of manslaughter in not paying for a rescue at sea off their coast (reportedly mind you) ?

----------------------------
ANSWER 1: it's all a pile of self justifying facist drivel. just ignore them.

ANSWER 2: when you get the chance inflate their ass 2x as bad as they did, becuase they did it illegally and without cause of poverty, for sake of building mcmansions

So they have big balls and a child that's about to die as a result. Not so much "fear of everything", just a guideline of what you probably shouldn't do with an infant.
