Fairfax County Officer Berling's Son Steals Cop Car/Fires Gun
Posted by: Brandon Berling ()

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/James-Berling-Son-of-Fairfax-Co-Officer-Arrested-for-Driving-Police-Cruiser-253441841.html

A 27-year-old man has been arrested for driving his father's marked police cruiser and unlawfully firing a weapon, all while wearing his father's uniform shirt.

Crews initially responded to the 15000 block of Stillfield Place in Centreville around 2 a.m. March 16 for suspicious noises. They say 27-year-old James Michael Puebla Berling, a son of a Fairfax County police officer, fired a gun there.

Shortly after, a trooper noticed a Fairfax County police cruiser driving over the speed limit on Route 29. Fearing an officer was in distress, the trooper gave chase to offer assistance.

At some point during the drive, Berling had activated his police lights.

Troopers caught up with him back on Stillfield Place, at which Berling and a passenger attempted to escape into nearby woods. They were arrested and charged shortly after.

Berling was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, impersonating a police officer and wreckless discharge of a weapon. Officials say the gun fired by Berling was not issued to police.

Caitlin Lee, 18, of Centreville was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of marijuana and schedule I or II narcotic.

Why Officer Berling is not going to be disciplined for leaving his cruiser keys available for his son to get ahold of...and lead VA State Police on a pursuit? Shotgun was available in the cruiser as well. Sure, they criminally charged the son. But lets cover up the actions of Officer Berling such as why he did not secure his county equipment and why his cruiser was parked at his house when he was out of town. That it itself is a violation of General Orders. Double standard for some as usual. Screw the incompetent FCPD Command Staff and Chief Protect my Certain Buddies who decided not to do anything to Berling. But you can be assured if the officer was not in a network group, he would be screwed by IA.

It's true. Momma Berling let a small child die in her home daycare and now her drug addicted son is taking a joy ride in papa Berling's cruiser and firing off rounds in the air like Yosemite Sam.

Sounds like a well balanced family.

Don't worry, this will all be swept under the rug and the son's night on the town will be expunged from his record in no time. Am I right, momma Berling?

It's very ignorant though to make assumptions when you have no idea what the punishment is. You can have your own opinions and all but that doesn't change the fact that no one knows what will happen yet.

It will get put on the back burner, court will be delayed, everyone will forget about it..Then a slap on the wrist.
How do I know? I have seen this happen before. I know a few lawyers who know judges. The lawyer gets busted for a DWI, refuses to blow a number, DOES NOT spend a day in jail.
Court day is delayed for a year and a half, end result, No jail time, restricted licence recommended, but not enforced, gets yelled at by the judge in private and walks away clean.
This shit does happen.

They are seriously a bunch of arrogant, malicious, lying jerks and the kids learned everything they know from their parents and grandparents. Secrets and lies can't keep the fallout from happening- and it is happening.

Excellent point. Was the Police shotgun in the car? Was there pictures taken? Did the kid know how to get the shotgun out of the lock?

Since the Police Shotguns have 14 inch barrels and are kept loaded (did a ride-along with FCPD years ago) they are illegal to possess by normal citizens without BATFE approval( $200.00 tax stamp and fingerprints/background check).

Mere possession is in violation of 18 U.S. Code 921. and Junior can do several years in jail.

Will the BATFE investigate? Does anyone in IAD have any investigatory experience? My guess is NO.

Scuttlebutt in the neighborhood is that the kid has been a screw-up for years and daddy intervenes on his behalf.

FCPD Shotguns in the cruisers are very easy to remove if you have the key in the ignition. Shotguns are in a lock. But if the key is in the ignition, all you have to do is push the button on the magnetic lock and it opens. That is way it is set up since an officer needs to remove it in a hurry. Ammo is already in the tube (not one in the chamber).

So the kid had the key......and immediate access to the shotgun.

Go to http://epwsgdp1.courts.state.va.us/gdcourts/caseSearch.do?welcomePage=welcomePage and type in Fairfax County Court, then do a name search. She shows up. He does not.

It could be because he was charged in circuit court, that's where the more serious charges are filed. You can look up those cases here - http://ewsocis1.courts.state.va.us/CJISWeb/circuit.jsp - but Fairfax for some reason does not use this case management system for their circuit court.

I'm no expert but I think this is the case. Berling was arrested on the 18th or something and I did see a story around the first saying he was still in custody.

No. He would have a preliminary hearing in General District Court first. Something is fishy here.

I agree with the whole generalizations thing but you kind of bring this on yourself when you're caught shooting a gun and driving lights on while not being a cop. There should be some accountability regardless of who the father is. Our society provides people too many outs. Do you think a normal citizen would make it out of that debacle without a felony?

Eventually, you need to pay the piper.

If the kid were black he would have been gunned down by police.

What I'd like to know is how Berling can afford 4 cars (in addition to his police car), 2 jet skis, a boat and live in VA Run? Did he win the lotto or is he on the take?

How does FCPD expect the respect they demand when these cover ups happen so visibly?

Is Officer Berling still working? Or is he on Admin leave pending an IA investigation? What the does the new Chief Roessler have to say? This is the first high media case involving one of his officer since taking the chief job. Cover up sounds about right.

the sad lesson we learn from all of this is that there are hypocrites everywhere. Corruption exists everywhere. Hopefully someone from FCPD reads this and realizes how they look from the outside. Not that they'd dare and take any action to correct it. They're the cops after all!

I guess not since with a free take home car, the gas, insurance, and maintenance are paid for by you and I. I know many other county officers who don't have that perk.

Why did it take 17 days for this story to break? How many shots were fired in this daycare/home?
