Illegals - they probably got kicked out of their boarding houses because they couldn't pay the rent. At least this time, they set up camp near a restaurant where they can get handouts from the restaurant at the end fo the day.

The last time they ran them out of the woods, it took two big trucks to haul off their trash. It's amazing how much trash they can accumulate in such a short time.

I lived in the woods from age 14 to (almost) age 18. Not in Reston, but off Route 1 near Belvoir. This was the late '70s before there were many illegals. Mostly winos back then.

We had somebody try to squat on our vacant property in Herndon. I was able to get him to move on after about two weeks.

I've noticed at least one tent in the woods near the on-ramp from Backlick to 7100, too. Been there for more then a month now, must be pretty cold. It's clearly visible from the road, so I guess it must be ok to squat on public land now.

Is this legal? I mean no one can make you sleep in a shelter. I never thought I would see homeless people in Nothern Va. Sad.

I would at least try to get an RV trailer if i had to be homeless right now. One with a little kitchen and bathroom if i can. Rent a uhaul when needed to move it! Or at least get one of those cargo vans and sleep in the back...forget a tent!

You'd have to be constantly mobile and would need a power source for that to be practical. I don't think you can get away with leaving an RV trailer in one spot for very long before you'd get hassled... at least around here.

Get a small RV or a truck with a camping trailer.

There's a lot of changeover due to them being periodically run off by the police. There've been almost all Hispancs when I've encounted excampments. There's also another one down the street next to the Sunrise Assisted Living.

Who exactly are these people and why are they there?

There are hundreds of people who live in Fairfax County, year-round, and relatively off the grid.

Some live in little settlements (tent cities, homeless camps, etc.). A good many of them have "issues", and need to live more alone.

I had one client who lived near Vienna metro station, right off an entrance ramp to 66, and he had over a thousand square feet of covered living area: a kitchen, a sleeping area, a reading area, all under tarps and ropes. THe DOC came one day and told him he had a few days to leave. He wanted me to fight the "eviction", but I told him it was no use. So, he just moved to another location.

I had another client who lived near the Rt.50/Rt. 66 interchange, and he lived in a shelter made of lumber and sheetrock. It was a solid little one-room house, with a little porch. I think it is still there now.

These people usually live that way by choice, to avoid any government assistance/interference with their lives.

I was curious to see if these were classic homeless people, or people had recently lost their jobs and houses over the past 2-3 years during the Economic disaster.

Did anyone consider that some of these people might have been a former neighbor. Just because they live in the woods and struggle to feed themselves does not equate to drunken/drugged deranged people. Yes there are some, but there are also families and kids without families living in the woods. Next time take them a meal or just lend an ear. Who knows you coud be next.

That's Herndon, not Reston. The Herndon police are constantly clearly them out also. I believe the land is Herndon parkland.

The tents visible from the road are past the Target plaza going from Herndon to Reston, just past the Sunoco station - edge of the posted map. The strip of woods backs to the toll road.

The cops seem to clear out the tents when the trash becomes prominent.

The other spot is across from the Reston library, behind the police station.

I've seen several tents, but I've never passed it and actually saw people. Could be they even have jobs during the day and just can't afford housing. That IS possible if you're working for minimum wage. Just leave them be. They aren't hurting anybody...just trying to survive.

I'm sure the police are well aware of them and, as long as they aren't causing trouble, then the police probably have more important things to worry about.

They were still there as of last weekend. There are two or three camo tents, green ones and some tarp shelters. They have plastic grocery bags hanging from the trees and stuff, it's pretty gross looking. I can get some pics this week, it's less than a mile from my house.

Thanks, would you mind doing that and posting them here? Just don't get yourself hurt in the process. I'm very curious about this and have tried spotting it when I've gone by there from the highway. I didn't see anything but you mentioned there are camo tents, and that's probably why they're difficult to see.

6'6" 230 lbs, don't think I'll get hurt, but I'll be careful. I can put them up tonight if I remember to do it on the way home from work. I think there's a wall on the far side of the camp hiding it from 267, so it could only be seen from Sunset Hills.

It's gotten much more trashy as of yesterday (3/15/14), and at least 2 tents are erected, but when I was walking by there on Friday (3/7/14) night at about 9:30pm, I saw a light in the tent, so I know people are “setting up shop”. I've written and called Cathy Hudgins's office (the county supervisor), but I assume from their non-response that they condone such tent-dwelling and trashing up the woods, and they could care less about people like my wife and I, who don’t like to drive our cars on the weekend, but who like taking walks away from the roads and traffic. When my wife’s mother (who has Alzheimer’s) was staying in the Cameron Glen facility, she and others were afraid to take their relatives by this point in the path for fear of encountering the tent-dwellers, who stay there at all hours of the day and night. And a person would have to be very brave to turn left at the path by the tents. Last summer, my wife and I walked by there several times at about 11 pm after a movie, and we could easily hear people talking in the tents. One time, when I was using my flashlight, a man came out of the tent and started talking to us after we passed. It really scared my wife, and we hurried away for fear that he would run after us. We’ve also seen people urinating out in the open near this spot. The sewage that's generated from those people living there must be very unsanitary.

This tent and trash seem to be an advertisement: “If you want to live in and trash up the woods, come to Reston, VA. The local government doesn’t prohibit it; they condone it! Come to Reston and set up your tents!!”
