Let's face it, traffic in this area sucks! So why don't they allow the use of the HOV lanes during random non-hov hours?

Went downtown on Saturday to spend an afternoon visiting the museums, around 11:00am 66 was bumper to bumper in both directions. Why do they not allow the use of the HOV lanes on weekends? Sitting in traffic staring at those red X's saying the lanes are closed really pissed me off!!!! What's the point of not allowing the use of ALL the lanes to help alleviate some of this traffic during random non-hov times???

Please only respond if you have a well thought out intelligent response that makes sense.

The reason 66 doesn't hov on non rush-hour is cause too many people are exiting/entering compared to commute hours.

During rush hour traffic people use 66 for long trecks (i.e. 29 gainsville to route 7 falls church).

Non-rush hours people tend to use 66 for short trecks. (i.e. getting on at 123 and getting off at nutley).

That is why hov only works on 66 during rush-hour traffic.

Meaning there will be less people traveling short distances in 66 (
During rush tour most people travel longer distances on 66

Those red X's are not HOV lanes dumbass. They are the shoulder and built for people to pull off the road if they have car trouble.

During certain times Virginia opens those lanes to all traffic.

As for HOV lanes, they are open to anyone during non HOV designated times. If they weren't, then you would not have been able to drive on 66 inside the beltway dumbass.

Why not just build a double decker road, make the people from Gainesville etc pay for it.
