Hiring Standards for ACPD

My buddy recently applied at Arlington country police department and was denied. He was a military police officer in the Marine Corps. He was told that he needs at least 60 semester credits and that he can not substitute military training for school. So let me get this straight, some kid can go to NOVA and get his AA degree and become a cop but they wont allow a military cop that has 4 years of actual training in......???

Degree is required - if you don't like it, apply to an agency that doesn't require an advanced education.

FYI - I've never heard of Arlington Country.. although, there is an Arlington County.

It could have changed in the last 15 or so years, but I had a friend who joined the capitol police after returning from Desert Storm. He was a ranger, and I don't believe he had ANY college credits.

After a while he applied for and became a park police officer. He loved the Park Police, he was stationed at Glen Echo and patrolled the Clara Barton PKWY and got to do some stuff downtown a couple times a month. Plus he could volunteer to direct traffic at Wolftrap Farm Park and then watch the performance for free.

Arlington County does not want some boneheaded former Marine slapping the residents around....especially those of the upscale North Arlington.

That stuff about learning valuable skills in the military is mostly bullshit. They're trying to enlist cannon fodder, so they'll tell them anything to get them to sign up.

I have a friend whose son operated a crane in the Army for 8 years, and when he got out nobody and I mean NOBODY would let the kid within 1000 feet of their civilian crane. And this was before big downturn in construction.

They didn't want "army-style" operators...he could just cost them too much money when he fucked up.

Like Bob said, this gyrene should apply to federal police agencies...they have to hire them.

He can apply to the multiple Sheriff, and university departments in the area.

Oh right but the community college degree will teach you to be such an upstanding citizen right???

I heard that the Arlington Country Police have a more lax dental standards than the Arlington County Police....

Arlington County Police probably have plenty of applicants that meet and exceed their minimum standards. I'm willing to bet that they get plenty of former MP's who also have bachelor's degrees, or even more education. I would recommend that this person find a university police/security department where he meets the minimum standards, and that waives or discounts tuition for employees. Once he gets the education under his belt, he can shop around for another place to work.

Well, the community college won't brainwash them with the "I am Superman" shit that the Corps does.

Plus, with Henderson Hall located in the County, I'm sure the Arlington Police is well acquainted with just how immature most those guys are.

That sounds like an appropriate plan of action. ACPD blows billy goats, btw.

I could make the argument that the military is racist since they go around killing foreigners. Stop talking in generalities.

Stop deifying the military. They have their good and the have their bad apples (according to our own current Commander in Chief).

If the Arlington County PD wanted your friend, they would have found a way to get him. But they said they did not want him, and, according to you, did not really offer any alternatives. Sounds like your friend is the one with the issues, not the PD.

Guarding ordinance and being a campus cop require completely different skill sets. If only colleges thought more about that when making staffing decisions.

There is a hiring freeze in Arlington right now. They won't hire anyone.

Actually, other than in combat zones, MPs generally do just about everything a regular "street cop" does, he just has the added difficulty of sometimes having to be a cop to someone who outranks him.

Imagine being a young Private on your first assignment at Fort Myer, and you pull over the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff for DUI? Or you bust a bunch of kids for vandalism, and one of them turns out to be the daughter of the base commander or something?

Yup, this is true,

Fairfax county is only taking lateral transfers

Prince William?

Loudon I think only laterals

Tell him to try Metro Transit- a really long academy but he will have a accreditation in three areas, Maryland,DC and Virginia. Their academy is like 9 months, do another 1 1/2 half and then apply for a lateral transfer to any agency in the Metro area.
