You're invited to join us for this free and open event next Tuesday. Here are the details:

The Springfield District Democratic Committee and the National Affairs Committee present

Stop Gun Violence: A Discussion on the Overhaul of the Federal and Virginia Gun Laws

Tuesday, January 22, 2013
7:00 PM - 7:45 PM
FCDC General Meeting to follow
West Springfield High School Cafeteria
6100 Rolling Rd, Springfield, VA 22152

Program Panelists:

Colin Goddard, Virginia Tech Survivor, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
Joshua Horwitz, Executive Director, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence
Martina Leinz, Virginia State President, Million Mom March
LuAnn McNabb, President, The Angel Fund
Omar Samaha, Gun Violence Prevention Activist

Refreshments will be provided by the Fairfax County Young Democrats

Panelists' Biographies:

Colin Goddard is the Assistant Director of Victims and Youth Advocacy and Federal Legislation for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. He survived being shot four times during the worst school shooting in American history * the Virginia Tech massacre of April 16, 2007. That chilling experience prompted Goddard to become an advocate for sensible gun laws at the nation’s most prominent gun violence prevention advocacy group in June 2010. Colin graduated Virginia Tech in 2008 with a B.A. in International Studies and a minor in French in 2008.

Joshua Horwitz is Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence who has spent nearly two decades working on gun violence prevention issues. Josh developed the long-term strategy to close illegal firearms markets as a way to focus the gun control movement on the huge gaps in our nation's gun laws that easily allow criminals to obtain firearms. He has managed dozens of issue campaigns at the state and federal level-including, in 2005, the successful campaign to defend the power of the citizens of the District of Columbia to establish gun laws without the interference of Congress. He also represents victims and municipalities in their suits against the gun industry.

Martina Leinz has advocated for responsible gun laws since high school when one of her classmates opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, killing two and injuring nine, including eight children. In 2000, she participated in the first Million Mom March in Washington. She has been an active member of the organization ever since and has served as the Virginia State President for the past six years. In 2007, she received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service for her gun violence prevention efforts by Johns Hopkins University.

LuAnn McNabb is the President of the Board of Directors of The Angel Fund which is an organization that seeks to educate, advocate and implement practical solutions to the issues that caused the tragedy at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. Founded by Reema Samaha's parents, Joe and Mona Samaha, the Angel Fund educates through its website, panel discussions and the media, advocates by meeting with elected officials and testifying at hearings and is seeking practical solutions to issues that contributed to the tragedy: privacy and information sharing, campus safety and security, and mental health. The Angel Fund is seeking change in laws and policies in order to prevent another tragedy.
Ms. McNabb was also the Director, Programs and Legislation and Executive Director for the VTV Family Outreach Organization.

Omar Samaha graduated in 2006 from Virginia Tech, where his sister Reema was killed during the mass shooting on April 16, 2007. Since then, Omar has been an advocate for stronger gun laws, from participating in an undercover investigation for ABC’s 20/20, to leading the nationwide Fix Gun Checks campaign. He now works full time on gun violence prevention in Washington D.C. In 2010 Omar advocated closing the gun show loophole in campaign ads for Congressman Gerry Connolly.

Can't have a Democratic meeting without victims. Doesn't sound like anyone will have any real solutions except to stop bad looking guns. It is only 45 minutes, probably 30 minutes too long.

Are the refreshments vegan?

I'm having a meeting to protest forks, you see, Forks are really bad, they need to be controlled. Because of forks that I use to eat, I have gained a massive amount of weight and now have diabetes and high blood pressure.
Something needs be be done about forks.

Fun drinking game: bring a bottle of booze and take a shot each time the word clip is used instead of magazine! If you're a serious drinker, also take a shot each time the term "assault rifle" is misused.

It's a shame someone in Norris Hall didn't have gun, other than Cho.

Frankly speaking, getting rid of all guns in the US is on par with shipping back all the illegal immigrants. Not possible.

From your insane post I would imagine a high dosage of Valium would do you well.

Gun owners should be limited to muskets, just like the ones they had when the constitution was written. I'm sure our for fathers would have never included the second amendment if they would have seem the destruction a modern assault style rifle is capable of.

Or that the Founding Fathers were a lot smarter than we thought and didnt want people like you voting that just pick and choose what they deem to be important.

Youre welcome to just leave the country if you think the constitution is hindering your life so much. But youre nothing more than a troll. You claim to be retired at the age of 50 and rich, if thats the case you never actually worked and just married into money

There are 40,000 people killed per year in car accidents and it's the leading cause of death for ages 1-30. Source: http://www.lawcore.com/car-accident/statistics.html

Maybe we should be more concerned with making cars illegal since it's statistically the BIGGEST killer in the US.

That reminds me, guns are banned in Chicago. How is it possible that they are the leading Homicide capital in the US and someone is shot and killed almost daily? Have you not noticed that ALL of these incidents (school shootings, mall shootings, etc) are ALWAYS "gun free zones"?

Correct. In the United States roughly 39.8 million, or 1 in 6, die from health risks related to being overweight every year.

Incidents of mass murder in the U.S. declined from 42 in the 1990s to 26 in the first decade of this century. The chances of being killed in a mass shooting are about what they are for being struck by lightning.

It will accomplish an open discussion about how to prevent some mentally ill person from shooting up Fairfax county schools or local shopping malls.

We can't just sit back and wait until some gun nut kills 30-40 students at the local school.

We need to take preventive action now.

Actually you have a more open door discussion here. Only Democrats will be at that feel good meeting. You get to hear both sides here on FFXU, but I know the Dems only want to hear what is on their agenda.

"We can't just sit back and wait until some gun nut kills 30-40 students at the local school.

We need to take preventive action now."

You sound like this is emenient that it will happen here, it isn't. School is much safer than many other activities children are involved in. But you are really not interested in the children, it is the guns that bother you. While you "take preventive action now" against "some gun nut" by limiting what he or she can buy, he or she will just change their choice of weapons, maybe go to explosives and inflict more deaths. But it is okay with you libs because guns are bad and people are never to blame for their actions.

Reality Check,
If you really want to "take preventative action now", lock up the criminally insane, post a cop or 'school resource officer', and teach your kids that evil exists in the world and how they should react if the Devil comes calling.

Life isn't safe. Get over it.

The operative word in your statement "We can't just sit back and wait until some gun nut kills 30-40 students at the local school." is NUT. As in not balanced and shouldn't be walking the streets.

But banning objects is about the dumbest thing we can possibly do to "keep our kids safe". We haven't banned bathtubs, swimming pools, or cars, and yet they are involved in the deaths of more kids than firearms are in this country. So stop blaming the object. Blame the person, not the tool.

Is it really that hard to figure out? Objects aren't evil. PEOPLE are evil. Switchblade knives aren't evil, but yet they are difficult to own in VA. So, a steak knife is just as effective if I want to hurt someone. Big SUVs kill people in the wrong hands, but they also take kids to soccer practice.

THE OBJECT ISN'T THE PROBLEM YOU IDIOTS! Is that REALLY so hard to understand???

So C4 explosives and hand grenades shouldn't be banned?

Stop with your nonsense and excuses. We know that mainly one type of rifle is being used in all the attacks on malls and schools. Why wouldn't we outlaw that type of rifle?

It has certainly been proven, like C4 explosives and hand grenades, over and over that type of rifle is a threat to public security.

Its pretty much impossible to use explosives safely without significant damage to the area around it. You can use a firearm to defend yourself without killing/damaging everything within the surrounding area.

Attacks use handguns because they're killing people up close and for that you don't need a rifle. You can also carry two at the same time unlike a long gun. The difficulty in concealing a rifle is also a major factor.

Where can you get C4? You cannot. If you try to get such weapons there are strictly controlled ATF classes assigned to such things that is highly regulated.

FBI annual crime statistics show that hammers and clubs far outnumber the number of murders committed with a rifle.

Crimes committed with handguns are far more frequent compared to rifles. But of course you are yet another dumb fuck liberal afraid of the scary black rifle.

Dips shit.

The gunmen at the Newtown School, Aurora Mall and New Mexico had no problems walking around with a AR-15 and firing off hundreds of rounds.

So by your logic there are no crimes committed and deaths that can attributed to C4 because criminals can't get their hands on it. Because C4 can cause mass deaths...

Now you are starting to understand the concept of banning for public safety.

WRONG! WRONG!

In 2012 there were 12,082 deaths committed by firearms, 36 by hammers and 58 by club.

Why do people think that an AR-15 is some high powered rifle? Because its black? Does a V-4 car with a sporty body kit make it a sports car?

Why no cal to ban FN FAL's and all their clones? Those can fire 20 and 30 round magazines and they fire .308 round which has more stopping power than the AR's .223 Remington.

(snip)Stop with your nonsense and excuses. We know that mainly one type of rifle is being used in all the attacks on malls and schools. Why wouldn't we outlaw that type of rifle?

It has certainly been proven, like C4 explosives and hand grenades, over and over that type of rifle is a threat to public security(snip)

If *THAT* type of rifle is a threat to public security, WHY DO THE COPS IN FAIRFAX COUNTY HAVE THEM?!?

The rifle is an object. REPEAT AFTER ME...a hunk of steel and plastic will not ever hurt me.

Banning ojects doesn't work. Are you willing to ban swimming pools? Kids drown, you know...most of them in WATER. WATER KILLS KIDS! Let's ban water. ;)

Why WOULD you outlaw that type of rifle? Shouldn't we ban THAT type of CAR that kills kids? Or baseball bat?

Aren't illegal drugs...ummm, banned? How's that working out??

Personally, I'd rather have the HUMAN that causes the problem locked up, or at least in a padded room until they can be helped.

Really want to walk the dog with explosives and grenades? Try hard enough, and I'm POSITIVE you can get your hands on both, depsite them being incredibly difficult to own legally (not impossible, just difficult).

Name me one time that banning an object has actually worked. We tried it with alcohol in this country. THAT worked out well.

So what? We can always amend the constitution. We've been doing that ever since the constitution was written.

1. I'm not your son.

2. What's scary? Pointing out that Fairfax County cops have the EXACT types of weapons and 'high capacity' magazines that these liberals want banned? What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Isn't that what we teach kids?

The arguement goes...'well, the cops need them because of the bad guys...'. Right, the cops patrol FAIRFAX COUNTY, where we supposedly all live. That means there are bad guys in the neighborhood, right? If you choose not to protect your family, make your peace with that and go to sleep tonight. Personally, I choose to protect my family with more than a cell phone. And how DARE you tell me how I can protect my family.

3. Prohibition didn't work. Cocaine and pot are illegal, but yet I'm pretty sure I could get my hands on either on the streets of Fairfax County, so how's that working? Banning objects doesn't work. What's scary about those statements?

Stop and think. The object is just an object. Explosives are generally difficult to own, yet the Unabomber cooked them up in his shack in the woods. The Oklahoma City bombings happened, and so have tons of other incidents. Crazy people will always find a way to do what they want to do. The key to the puzzle isn't the object...its the people.

Is that so hard to understand? Or do you just not WANT to understand that?

Thomas Jefferson and many others agreed that the constitution was a starting point and living document.

Thomas Jeffersons Quote-

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."

Okay we can amend the 2nd amendment right after we go back to saying you have to be a land owner to vote. Since you think rights are trivial, your right to vote shouldnt mean anything

If nothing can be stopped then why lock your car or house?

It's simple, you're putting in place barriers to prevent unnecessary actions from occurring.

By the way... another school shooting occurred today. Go figure.

Feel free to boycott Groupon for pulling anything associated with guns including gun safety and self-defense training classes. Local shithead and failed owner Ted Leonsis sits on their board and has financed them heavily. Typical thinking from a former AOL asshole. Guess he got bored with running the Wizards into the ground and making sure that the Caps fail in the playoffs every year.

There is no law forcing me to lock my doors. That's MY CHOICE, not some imposed feel good law.

If you want to lock your doors, feel free. And I'll choose to lock mine. But don't tell me I have to do something by law that is inherently a CHOICE by an INDIVIDUAL.

Thank you for making my point.

Want to save lives? Put throttle limits in every car sold, and retrofit every car on the road. No one NEEDS to go 75mph, and throttling everyone will save lives. Since the you don't have a RIGHT to own OR drive a car, you should be perfectly fine with that solution to saving lives. And it will be more effective than banning plastic, steel, and aluminum objects.

This just in, another school shooting in Houston

(CNN) -- Students ducked under desks and ran for cover during a shooting at a community college in Texas on Tuesday.

At least three people were injured in the shooting at the North Harris Campus of Lone Star College in Houston, including two students who were apparently caught in crossfire, a school spokesman said.

Two suspects involved in the shooting were in custody, CNN affiliates KHOU and KTRK reported. CNN has not independently confirmed the second suspect's arrest.
Witnesses told CNN affiliates that at least one gunman opened fire after an altercation between two people.

Jed Young, a school spokesman, said officials believe there were two shooters.
One of them was among the wounded and was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, he said. The other shooter fled the campus, Young said.

There wasnt more guns in that school there were whatever guns the shooters had. You seem to be missing the connection that almost all of these shootings happen at soft targets where they know no one else is armed.

You want to stop school shootings tell the media to stop hounding it. All theyve done is given twisted or mentally ill individuals a way to leave their mark on the world as they exit it.

Interesting data!

"Why is it the progressive liberal that steals guns and then goes and kills
movie goers and children in school has never been an NRA member?"

Ft Hood - Registered Democrat- Muslim

Columbine - Too young to vote - both families were registered Democrats
and progressive liberals

VA Tech - Wrote hate mail to Pres Bush and to his staff. Registered
Democrat

Colorado Theater - Registered Democrat, staff worker on the Obama
campaign, occupy wall street participant, progressive liberal

Connecticut School Shooter - Registered Democrat, hated Christians

Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive liberal
democrats."

Interesting...isn't it?
