Where can I fill 5 Gallon water jugs?
Posted by: MeMe ()

I bought a 5 Gallon water dispenser a few weeks ago but don’t want to pay the 7 dollars to fill up the jugs at home depot.. I know there are retail locations where you can fill them up for something like 35 cents a gallon. Does anybody know where any places like that are here in NOVA?

Sure. They're called faucets. If you can't fit the jug into your sink, get another amazing piece of technology called a hose and connect it to your faucet.

What morons pay $1.40 per gallon at Home Depot (or anywhere else) for water? If you have a real aversion tap you can probably buy generic spring water at Walmart for less, but why not just invest in a decent whole house filtration system if you are so concerned about water quality?

Why do thinks its called evian.....Naive spelled backwards...

most bottled water is just filtered tap water. as other have said. buy a filter for your tap and let the faucet flow.

also keep in mind that all those plastic jugs if they are not properly recycled, end up in landfills for a very long time...

You can't fill them - they're single use only. Once the jug is empty, it becomes contaminated with air and is no longer suitable for liquid.

You got the one with the cap that has a seal on it right? Seal wasn't broken?

The above poster is correct once air contaminates the jug you should throw it away.

A lot of it is. Dasani and a bunch of others are just filtered tap water.

Unless it says "spring water", it's probably just muni water that's been filtered via reverse osmosis or something. Even some brands that claim to be spring water are stretching the truth by claiming that since the muni supply is from a spring, they can call their bottled tap water "spring water".

I think some whole foods have something like that. But anywhere you pay 35 cents a gallon you're most likely just getting tap water, and if you're lucky it's filtered, but most likely not, since reverse osmosis filtration wastes a gallon for every gallon of filtered water it produces.

For the price you pay at Home Depot, you can have Deer Park or Crystal Srping deliver five 5 gallon jugs of spring water to your house each month.

I used to have this service when I had roommates and could split the cost with them, and it's really convenient. For about $30 a month, they drop off 5 water bottles and pick up your empties.

Since you already own the dispenser, you don't have to pay the $8 a month rental fee for one of their's.

BTW, I hope you know you need to pour a little bleach in the dispenser and run fresh water through it every month or so. Most people forget to do that, and all kinds of bacteria builds up in the well, sorta defeating the purpose of paying for spring water.

How much bleach do you need to run through the dispenser Bob? After that I run how much water through it?

Now if I wanted to store water whats the best way to do that? I was going to fill some jugs I had but after reading this thread that doesn't sound like such a good idea.

Thanks in advance!

I don't remember exactly, I think a few tablespoons, maybe 1/4 cup mixed in a quart of water, then run a few gallons through. I used to just take an empty 5 gal. water bottle and fill it about halfway with tap water, and use that to flush after running the bleach solution through.

I think you can safely store water in jugs, but I would dispose it after a year, clean the jug and refill with fresh water. The remark someone made about air contaminating the bottle was a joke. Do you think beverage containers are filled in some sort of vacuum chamber?

my point was that they add various "minerals" to alter the taste so that can claim that's what purified water tastes like.

It depends on the container; there is a code on the bottom of the container. Some containers are safe to refill.

Refillable containers should be cleaned thoroughly and sterilized with a bacteria killing peroxide / water solution, then rinse well with VERY hot water and fill.

Filling from the tap, or filling with bottled water, is probably the safest ways to go.

Remember the days when we bought those 5 gallon Rubbermaid jugs at the discount stores and refilled them dozens of time for picnics or outings?

How on earth did we ever survive?

If you're planning to store water, the best way is to sterilize the container (you can do this by boiling for 15-30 minutes in a stockpot) then add 1/2 tsp of chlorine bleach (Clorox, for example) to 5 gallons water. This will keep for about 3 years depending on the permeability of the container.

Another good technique is to build a water filter for emergency situations. This never goes bad and you can reuse it hundreds of times. Take a 5 gallon bucket, drill a few holes in the bottom, add a layer of cheesecloth to the bottom, 6 inches of activated charcoal (buy at an aquarium store) and then up to the top with sand, leaving about 3" of space at the top. Have another bucket to catch the water. Pour unfiltered water on top of the sand and let it filter through. Presto, clean, fresh, filtered water.

There are BPA free water jugs available. and yes, it would be smart to clean them before each fill (scolding water or vinegar is also an alternative to bleach). However, all municipal water sources have chlorine and fluoride to the supply, which counter to popular belief, are devastating on your health. Yes, some bottled water is nothing more than just tap water, but others are not. And yes, some add minerals for flavor, but also health, as many American diets lack proper minerals needed for ultimate health.

Instead of offering no helpful advice what-so-ever, most of you may want to do some research and realize what's truthfully beneficial before spouting your mouths and making useless, demeaning, sarcastic remarks.

There are sources of pure water that filter out not only organic contaminants, but do not include chlorine or fluoride and other hormones and pharmaceuticals that contaminate most municipal water supplies. I apologize that I can't give you specific examples of where to find these sources in your area. If you would like a source that you know you can trust because you service the filtration yourself, you could invest in a faucet attachment filtration device and fill your own bottles, for example at http://waterfilters.mercola.com/products/drinkingwaterfilters.aspx

It's definitely a steeper start up cost, but when it comes to healthy water, crucial to your health, that's your decision to make. The filters should also last quite a while if you're only filling 5 gallon bottles.

A North Carolina Sticks friend of mine used to recount the story of how he filled his "jugs". Drive out to a particular location where there was a tree stump off the side of the road, place $10 on the stump, leave. Come back 15 minutes later - filled jug is on the stump. He let me sample some of this one time when I visited his house.

That was some mighty fine water.

I needed a shot of whiskey to ease the pain.

Those empty bottles can be cleaned with a little bleach. 8 to 16 drops of bleach per gallon makes most water drinkable....The smell may linger but it won't kill ya.....

Fill the 5 gallon jug
Pour water out into 3 gallon jug
You have 2 gallons left, empty 3 gallon jug and fill it with 2 gallons.
Fill the 5 gallon jug, pour into 3 gallon jug that has 2 gallons already.
You'll end up with 4 gallons in 5 gallon jug exactly.

I also searched for this same question. There are some people who, despite having "free flowing water" in their home cannot drink it because of things in the water. I had my water tested and despite using a water softener and an iron reducer, still have been advised to NOT drink my FREE tap water. We had been purchasing bottled water, but that is a TON of bottles, even though we recycle them ALL. Therefore we opted to purchase a water dispenser, but most of the 5 gallon jugs of water are purified and we would like spring water. I wish that before people responded with ignorant comments that they would take the time to think that there are legitimate reasons why some people have to use water dispensers.

There used to be a natural spring on River Road in Md. just ouside the beltway about two or three hundred yards.

But then it used to take 7 minutes to get there from Tyson's Corner. Estimated round trip time not including filling the jugs must be two hours now.

Invest in a Pur filter for water connection at your house. Remember extension hose and correct mail and female connections depending on connecting to your kitchen faucet or outside faucet.

Notice that a lot of your new arrival types(even long time ones now, can you say assimilation no way) buy massive amounts of bottled water. Shopping Carts full. I thought many of them pride themselves on thriftiness but instead of buying all those small bottles the gallon jugs are a way better deal. I understand they have these things called glasses.

Faucet water okay imo but Evian tastes good. So I buy the occasional bottle or three.

Think I'll explore buying water in jugs(I said jugs Kate Upton). Wish they still had glass bottles(obviously 5 gallon jugs wouldn't work) I don't care for the plastic taste you get from many bottled waters i.e. polar

Don't act like a donkey. The stuff that comes out of your tap is not filtered and doesn't taste like anything I would want to drink in large quantities. She, like most of us, is looking for a source for good tasting drinking water at a reasonable price.

Your local service/gas station should let you fill a water jug for free. Perhaps your neighbor will let you use his/her garden hose.

Forget to pay your water/sewage bill?

Simple
Fill up the three gallon jug and pour it into the five gallon jug
Then refill the three gallon jug and fill up the five gallon jug
You now have five gallons and in one and one gallon in the other making six gallons
Fill up the three gallon jug from the five gallon jug you now have three gallons in each jug
Fill up the five gallon jug, you now have eight gallons
Drink one gallon from the three gallon jug and refill the three gallon jug from the five gallon jug
You now have four gallons in the five gallon jug and three in the three gallon jug
Like I said, SIMPLE

Fill the 5 gallon jug, empty into the 3 gallon jug.
You now have 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. Mark the water level.
Empty the 3 gallon jug and pour the 2 gallons into it.
Fill the 5 gallon up to the 2 gallon mark.
Pour the 2 gallons from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug to get 4 gallons.

Or take the easy path:
- Fill 5gal
- Fill 3gal from 5
- Empty 3gal
- Pour remaining 2gal from 5 into 3
- fill 5gal
- top up 3gal from 5
Presto, 4gal in 5gal. No marking required.

Now are we done?

Fill the 3. Empty it into the 5. Refill the three. Pour from the three to the five, filling it and leaving one gallon in the three. Empty the five. Pour the one gallon from the three to the five. Refill the three. Add to the five and presto chango, four gallons in the five. By the way, why do you need four gallons?
