IMPORTANT: The realcost of a propose 4% meals tax
Posted by: Meals Tax in Real Money ()
Date: September 29, 2016 11:14PM

I keep seeing this text repeatedly mentioned:

"On a five dollar meal at a fast food restaurant, the meals tax would be 20 cents."

Sure they pick a five dollar meal for their example. However, what if I have a $10,000,000.00 meal? This fucking meals tax would cost me fucking $400,000. I could buy three Ferraris with that money.

The proposed meals tax is out of control. I don't think people could afford to be paying an extra $400,000 on their meal.

If you support the meals tax, then you support the following expenditures by FCPS:

1) Hiring Eric Jensen, who has an online degree in "human development" to consult on neuroscience and music. He has no qualifications in neuroscience, and his theories on music have been proven FALSE by no less than Bobby McFerrin.

2) Hiring Menville "Flip" Flippen to improve teaching. Flippen has no background in education. Flippen's fees are very high-he has been known to charge $10,000 for a one hour speech!

3) Miring MINDS to teach mindfulness in the schools. MINDS is led by a basketball coach, and the mindfulness initiative was started by an unlisenced psychologist who runs a for profit meditation and yoga community.

All of these are MASSIVE wastes of money. If you oppose waste, then vote NO on the meals tax.

Shove it up your flabby ass, you ignorant douchebag. The revenue is going to come from somewhere. We can get it ALL from Fairfax County residents, or we can make other people chip in too. How fucking dumb do you have to be to go with Option-A?

Why do you seemingly support spending on discredited charlatans? "the revenue is going to come from somewhere" - yes, and it should be spent carefully and with an eye towards the "return", i.e. the value of an appropriate education. Hopefully, an education that permits the student to do productive work, buy a house, raise a family and participate in the life of the community - oh, and pay taxes that help the next generation to achieve at least as much.

Respecting differences and participating in the process of informing and debating our fellow citizens is a big part of making that community work...

sinful this a.m. I thought you were going to say:

“ ...an education that permits the student to do productive work, buy a house, raise a family, manage a budget and participate in the life of the community...

okay, "manage a budget" is important as well ;=) and yes, I'm biased towards the view that we have a "spending" problem in FCPS - more so when I read stories like this: http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/09/13/478834629/for-kids-anxiety-about-school-can-feel-like-being-chased-by-a-lion

But the focus of my comment this a.m. was on the respectful exchange of information and perspectives - admittedly, a quixotic aim on this board (or most others)...

put a fucking 10% tax on every dollar leaving Western Union or money Gram headed for a Latin American Country and your Problem is solved. We already pay nearly a 60% tax on every fucking meal we eat regardless if it is out on the town or in our homes.. Federal/State/Local/sales/personal property..we are taxed enough.

Residents will pay 100% of the tax. Anyone else 'chipping in' does not reduce the cost to residents. It simply adds to the overall take by the county above and beyond that paid by residents.

As opposed to an increase in real estate tax, a meals tax places a disproportionate burden on average residents and subsidizes more wealthy individuals, businesses, developers, other large non-residental property owners. The latter would pay significant real estate taxes but will not 'chip in' to the same degree via a meals tax.

Right-wing populism has become the bailiwick of those who just don't understand anything at all. Briefly put, these are "The Deplorables," and they hang out here in numbers.

You may have something there with the tax on money that is wired. That is one tax that the General Assembly would approve, it would help with the immigrants/illegals/dreamers contributing to the tax base and it would provide legitimate property tax relief to Fairfax County residents. Sounds almost perfect!
