Yes, to a certain extent. Why would anyone who was any good at anything else become a phys ed or art teacher?

There's a slight kernel of truth to this, but it's not why many would think.

A generation ago, the best and brightest women out of college became teachers. Now that there's much more gender equity in employment, smart and talented women are in positions that used to be male dominated.

I suspect the phrase may have come from people who look down on teachers. Teaching requires certain skills and personality traits. If you don't possess those you will likely fail as a teacher no matter how good you are at the underlying subject.

To answer Rain Maker's question, some people teach because they enjoy it. Others do it so they can earn money while pursuing their passions on the side. I suspect you have a number of art and music teachers who fall into this second catagory.

Of course it's true. Look at any school or college faculty list.

And those who can't teach.... become teacher coaches. or librarians or gym teachers.
