Radio Shack Closings?
Posted by: Ajshdjd ()

Any idea whether any Radio Shacks in Northern Virginia will be closing?

One just opened a couple months ago near the Walmart in Kamp Washington. I thought this was surprising since there are already a couple near Fair Lakes (not to mention another Radio Shack off Lee Hwy closed a few years ago).

Any idea if anyone actually goes to these places?

Like anything, it's really all about location. Although it's lost popularity, Radio Shack still holds value to engineer types who are radio DIY hobbyists. Online retailers seem to be hurting sales for Radio Shack, much like other brick and mortar stores. I think they shot themselves in the foot when they tried to be a go-to store for cell phones instead of continuing to be a source for computer geeks who need transistors and wiring accessories.

Radio shack will go bankrupt soon. if it is your stock portfolio you should dump it ASAP.

Trying to be a "mini Best Buy" was not the way to go. They should have stuck to the "hard to find" stuff.

Speaking as a radio DIY type guy, I'll be sad to see them go. I get a lot of stuff from the net but when I'm in a pinch it's nice to have a place to get an SMA connector or something else odd rather than waiting a week for it.

Back when I was a kid they had salaried professionals there who actually knew about electronics. These days it's some 23 year old kid who got a 1 hour training session on cell phone marketing. One time recently I went in there looking for plastic zip ties and they didn't know what they were.

I still sometimes visit the RS in Fair Lakes for parts. I hate it when the salesmen try to help me; they hardly ever know what they're doing. And stop asking for my zip code.

If that store closes, I might try Hobby Hangar on Sullyfield Circle in Chantilly. And, maybe they'll try to fill in the vacuum. Or maybe Radio Shack's departure will leave room for a mom and pop to open up somewhere nearby.

I think a lot of brick and mortar stores are going to be in trouble over the next decade, especially in places where the land is expensive to lease.

Nowadays, I seriously buy almost everything off Amazon. Instead of driving to 5 different stores to buy miscellaneous stuff I need, I just order off prime and it's at my house a day later.

Stuff like restaurants/grocers, auto body shops, hair salons, etc. will do okay b/c people still go in person, but I wonder what the average strip mall will look like in 15 years?

Like Springfield Mall just before they started demo work. Full of shops catering to third worlders, thugs, and teenies.

You are quite right. I was a part-timer for Radio Shack back in the 80's
and it was a great place to work. Salesmen were commissioned you had to
know your product and be able to connect with the customers. From October
through January it wasn't unusual at all for me to make $400.00 during
a four hour shift. Although I wasn't interested in being a full time
employee I was offered a management track program they had at the time
to the more competent sales staff.

RS started going down hill when the eliminated commissions and started
bringing in kids right out of high school who didn't know shit and
didn't care because they made them same no matter what. None of my
former co-workers stayed at RS after they lost their commissions,
including the store manager.

We (sales staff) referred to the DIY's as "Wall people". They'd come in
and stare at the electronic components on the wall for a while before
talking to a salesman. The only downside was that the components weren't
very expensive so you didn't make squat on commission. Another thing
was that some of the "Wall people" were electrical engineers who expected
a retail clerk to be able to advise them on how to build something.
Sometimes they'd get on my nerves but I managed to learn a few things
from them.

Back in the day the Shack was the place to get your stereo parts for car or home, I put some Frankensystems in my cars back then. So, a couple times they caught fire, big deal? Back to tha Shack man! Texas instruments had a video game watch back in '82 that my folks got me at tha Shack...bad ass game watch back then man! Long live Tha Shack! At least it outlasted Penguin Feather...

Very little of my total sales went to electrical components.
The real money was when you sold tv's. vcr's, stereos, computers, etc. Then there were add ons,
for instance if someone bought a computer in those days you'd also sell them a printer, cables, paper, and anything else you could recommend.
If they bought a stereo you'd also likely sell them speakers, cables,
and (this was a long time ago) an antenna. During the Christmas season
we'd also sell a lot of battery operated toys so we'd remind them that
there's nothing worse for a kid to wake up on Christmas morning and
not have any batteries. Remote controlled cars were a big seller and
we'd also point out the battery life is short and could only run for
a couple of hours without changing batteries. Good moment to offer them
a battery recharger with rechargeable batteries. Gotta rack up those
items on the ticket. You also made an extra commission if you sold them
an extended warranty.

Micro center has a pretty big section for DIY and hard-to-find. You don't need to inundate a market with stores if you go that way since people will go out of their way to do a one-time project.

Did you have a TRS 80? Or was we called them Trash 80? We joke but back in the day those were the bomb.

Note the price in the ad from that time. Comes to about $2,300 in today's dollars.

Thanks, I just had a Deja Vu moment there. Hard to believe
they were "the bomb" in those days but they were. I actually
had to learn the catalog, hardware,
software, and components to be able to sell them. Learning
software was a real kick in the pants for me because we were
implementing PC's on my full time Federal job and they were
Hell bent for leather for us to learn the new systems and
frequent upgrades so it was a time of "Software Overload"
Here's the 1985 catalog. Accoustic modems for a telephone
line hookup? You gotta be kidding me!

Going back to the 1980's, Radio Shack has been eclipsed by just about everyone. How they've lasted this long, who knows.

I like Radio Shack's Battery of The Month club. I've saved a bundle by getting free batteries there! And do they still have the vacuum tube tester in front of the store? Archer is my favorite in-house brand!

They always seem last to the party. They were one of the last retailers to utilize computers at their checkouts. They would meticulously hand write these detailed receipts that would take forever. I new back then that they were doomed...

Those fuckers working behind the counter always would try to get all of your information, Telephone number, zip code, address. All I wanted to do is buy a fucking $4.00 connector.
Back in the 80's it ruled.
Nothing can save Radio Shack now. Just go to one while they are still open, You will see.

That store relocated from the shopping center where the golf store is (border's books was). As a kid I would regularly beat the Trs-80 chess game on it's highest level.

Now I will go back to listening to my Realistic stereo with Mach 3 speakers. I used to love me the Shack. :-(

Wow, looking through that catalog feels like going in a time machine. Clearly remember when all those items were considered cutting edge. Funny thing is I don't remember them all being that expensive. I mean, those prices are insane and you gotta figure it's about double that now. But I guess we weren't paying attention to that back then, just having fun with this new technology.

They were even after the CP/M machines. I remember that I paid $2,500 for my first MS-DOS PC. An AST 286-12 with a whopping 1MB of memory (so I could load drivers into high mem using Quaterdeck), a 30 MB hard drive, with one of those cool new 720K floppy (which cost $70 for a box of 10), and a monochrome monitor.

$2,500 adjusted for inflation would be about $5,500 now.

Worse yet, for "word processing" at my business I paid $4,500(!) for a daisy wheel printer (90% of the people here have no idea what that even is. lol)

Those things sucked.

In addition to being agonizingly slow, they were loud as hell. Had to have a sound cover over them or it would drive you nuts. Which served the dual purpose of keeping them from vibrating off the table. lol

ok who wrote popular electronics books on radio shack shelves ?

anyone ?

and speaking of chinese, obama boon doggles, why were the solar cells sold there recently totally cheese ? no volage of any kind for any light source for any possible hookup ? i'd like to know that.

--------------------------------
oh the brick and mortar is in trouble ?

well okay. go to your internet where are you getting electronics ?

ah from asia. and you can't hardly get parts (with specs) let alone a system of them. your not asian they fuck with you.

------------------------------
your sad it's going. when is the last time you built any electronics ?

in america using any american parts let's assume ?

well obama's crew seems to be doing allot of driving and shopping. democrats too.

they do that at something called: STORES , aka brick and mortar mostly

----------------------
ok you can say: no. NYC franchises and shuts down any store that isn't a big box and doesn't sell chinese stuff, like a company run by an asian crime ring almost, like a goldman sachs (head office is in china)

but it's not so fairfax has a ton of strip malls and also shopping malls which are made of "brick and mortar stoes"

-------------------
that reminds me. springfield mall i hear is run down ?

i remember when another mall had had utility sport manufacuring all kinds of wares to sell

bull o va democrats get in triple gov pay ?

the damn mall lost it's ass and there were only clothing stores left

there was a time that people who weren't lazy democrats had money to buy american goods and were proud of it

and they didn't buy crap. they were utilitarian.

that's what i remember. when the town really wasn't full of democrat liars and loans paid with the promise to "allow collection unfair on the weak"

i remember when the town wasn't a facist haven

The customer service sucked ass, One dumb ass with no clue, getting shitty pay, same with the product. They turned it into a shitty best buy. A very far cry from what Radio Shack use to be. But they have sucked for a least 10 years now, maybe more.

I noticed last week that the Radio Shack in that shopping center (w/ Safeway & Old Original Pancake House) on the south side of Lee Hwy., west of Falls Church between Graham Rd. and the I-495 beltway, across from National Memorial Park (cemetery) is now closed. When I was a kid growing up in the 1960s, I was a science geek always building radios and various electronic gizmos from kits and parts, and just about all my allowance went to Radio Shack -- it was far better than a candy store to me. Kinda' sad to see them go, but the worst thing about them in recent years is that they had virtually stopped hiring Americans. I have not seen a native-born, English-speaking American (white, black, or hispanic) working in one of their stores in 25 years.
