Opinions on gyms in Fairfax

Been doing some searching and Yelp helped a little, but some of the places don't have many reviews. Any opinions?

Seems like Bally Total Fitness is a shithole, and Gold's (Fairfax and Merrifield) aren't much better. Lifetime doesn't sound too bad.. but I can imagine a hefty monthly fee.

What is this place called Equinox? Says there is one in Tysons. Misc. articles put the monthly fee at $120-$160? WSC doesn't seem bad, though their prices seem kind of high as well. Props to WSC for at least posting their prices and not making me go see a sleezebag sales rep.

Lifetime actually isn't all that expensive--around $70/mo for a single and $110/mo for a couple--I don't remember exactly. It's a nice facility. The only thing that irritated me was that the pool and hot tubs seemed to have odd rules about when they were open and when they weren't. Half the time I wanted to go soak in the hot tub it was closed for some arbitrary reason.

Lifetime in Centreville has a great rock climbing wall. Offers a decent range from nube to advanced, with some solo walls. Never spent much time in the rest of the gym, but it seemed quality.
Don't leave your kids alone in the pool! Some guy was caught masturbating during a swim lession, and some kid drowned about a year ago. On the plus side, the pool has a fountian:)

X-Sport Fitness in Merrifield is good and reasonably priced. Pool, rock wall, classes. They even have child care center so you can dump your kids off while you work out. There are CC monitors to watch them while on the treadmill if you're worried. It's not a bunch of meatheads there either.

Haha, that's a cool feature.. to be able to watch your kids via CC on the treadmill.

Costco has a sweet deal going on now where you can buy a two year pass to 24 hour fitness for 300. Of course, there isn't one in VA. Although I thought at some point there was a 24 hour fitness by the NRA? I know there was some brand of gym there that just closed it doors one day and surprised all the members.

golds in fairfax station is actually a really nice gym, all things considered. i like it better than lifetime fitness, which has diminished in quality since it opened. gold's is also significantly cheaper.

Depends on what type of membership you want. The "full access" (you can use NYSC, BSC, WSC, and PSC) costs $94-$104 per month. The "regional access" (can use any WSC) is $75-85 and the "gold membership" (only one club; this price is for Fairfax) is $54-$64.

So, WSC is kind of a rip off considering they aren't open 24 hours, the one in Fairfax doesn't have a pool, and I believe they don't have towel service. Lifetime offers all of that is usually $60-70/mo for a single.

I work at WSC in Fairfax. They do have free towel service. They also have a sauna and a steam room in both the men's and the ladies locker rooms. The classes are varied and popular and the only time it is crowded would be on Monday and Tuesdays from 5 to 7 pm but that is true for all gyms.

I do not get a discount for my own family members. I purchased a gold 2 year memebership for my husband a year ago. I paid $29 for some sign up fee and $41 a month for his dues each month. Unless you are going to be using gyms all over the East Coast in the chain, don't bother with the expensive Passport membership. Most front desk people don't even know or care when peak hours are.

Trickie

By the way, the membership people are not sleazy. They are moms, college grads, etc who sell a service and know what they are doing. It's unfair to categegorize sales people all together like that.

Trickie, a lot of people make the mistake of thinking salespeople are sleazy when in fact the sales policies of the companies they work for are in fact the source of the sleaze.

Many gyms do have underhanded tactics and policies, I know nothing about your gym besides what you tell us so I can accept they don't fit the stereotype. But I agree that it's usually not the people themselves who are sleazy.

Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly has a huge weight room and great equipment. It doens't get to crowded, and there isn't a bunch of meat heads in there. They are having a sale on passes right now so it really cheap to join. They also don't have contracts on there memberships. Check it out, much better than any other Park Authority RECenter.

if you want to go to a pretty gym and walk on a treadmill I suggest x-sport. I've belonged to golds, lifetime, planet fitness, and x-sport is the nicest. If you want an amazing training experience I suggest checking out Underground Athlete in Fairfax. You always work with a strength and conditioning coach, it's a great facility for real training.

Xsport in Merrifield. They are building another Xsport around here too. I pay 39 a month with no start up fee, no contract, and the rate is locked in. The gym is open 24/7 and they have a pool, sauna, jacuzzi, spa, rock wall, basketball court, and steam room.

I think it's by far the best bang for the buck around here. I used to belong to several Gold's in this area and paid way more with a contract for a non 24 hour.

The rate might be a little higher because I signed up when they were still building it at a promotional rate.

Are they not building it at a promotional rate any longer? What was the promotional rate that they were building it at?

I recommend Lifetime. Lots of machines, treadmills, elipitcals, bikes (both upright and recumbent), and weights. Decent locker rooms, showers, towels, saunas, hot tub, pool, free child care(with computers and climbing place for kids), basketball courts, free classes for members (yoga, spinning, aerobic, aquatic, step, etc). They have personal trainers, but I can't speak for their quality as it costs extra. The place is clean and the machines get repaired in a timely manner when they break. Rarely much of a wait to use anything, except maybe the shower after a class had let out.

They have a location in Fairfax and one in Centreville, the Centreville one also has a climbing wall. Previous poster mentioned not trusting the guards in the pool area, I second that, but then I wouldn't trust any guard anywhere when it comes to my kids in the pool.

When I got my gym membership I was able bargin the price down by telling the sales person I might join another gym because they were cheaper.

Most sales people dropped the membership price and if I went a couple of days they called me and wanted to know if there was anything they could do to get me to join.

I think the gym sales people make comissions off the sign ups and they have room to bargin.

I've worked at the Fairfax Golds in sales before. Your right about earning commission, but unfortunately, unless the gym is a franchise owned gym, corporate leaves very little room to bargain for. I still work at the new Gold's, and if you PM me or something, maybe I can see about getting whoever is interested some sort of corporate rate or something.

Contract as in if you cancel your membership before 12 months we charge you a penalty (golds does this).

Yes you actually sign pieces of paper but that is not the contract I was referring to. I have no idea what the current rate is. When I singed up they were still building this location and I got $39 a month.

No contract as in no start up fees and no early cancellation fees. Strictly month to month though they do have a pre paid year that is cheaper than month to month.

Recently went to a kick ass athletic club in Baltimore called the MAC (Maryland Athletic Club) The best part was it had an indoor pool and it was clean. We need a private athletic club in FC with an indoor pool that is clean. Let's hear it for a VAC.

Saturday I went to a kettlebell class at Underground Athlete. It was amazing, but definitely not your typical gym. There were things I've never seen (ropes, chains, some ladder looking things, punching bags, etc). The class was very good. I've been trying to do kettlebells at home with the dvd but I learned so much. Justin taught the class. A very nice guy, he was passionate and clearly knew his stuff. The advanced class came in next (i went to the beginner class). It was motivating to see all these fit people (majority women) who train there.

FYI: The 24 hour fitness club by the NRA in Fairfax closed last year (I was real sad about that). Their lease came due and they didnt wan't to pay the new leasing fee (which was reportedly sky high).

Have you thought about Fitness First (fitnessfirstclubs.com)? You can get access to all of their gyms for under 40$. I don't think any of the locations have pools and they don't offer towel service. There is one lcoated in Chantilly- not too far outside of fairfax city, off of rte 50. Also, personal training and all fitness classes are included in the membership (at least when I joined).

Life Time is pretty good but the showers are a tad gross and man dont take your eyes off your little ones at the pool because the lifeguards are the worst I have ever seen. They hardly ever pay attention to the pool and are usually talking, texting in the office or out to lunch.

I did not care for Cub Run. The locker room (ladies) was full of screaming kids (including boys up to about age 10). I swim and the pool was cleaner than most, it did not have an underwater ledge to rest on in the deep end. There are no private changing room or sauna. Lots of kids!!

Well, with that description of kids, I could imagine quite a few FFU'ers running to Cub Run right now to sign up. Do you know if Mary Kay Letourneau has a membership there?

Hi Everyone!

I am a recent college graduated who attended a West-Fairfax County HS. Since having finished college, I have opened my own gym in the Westside of Fairfax County/Loudon County.

My gym is called Ultimate Results at South Riding; granted it is literally located outside of Fairfax, it is but a 15 minute drive for a beautiful, premiere, safe, and clean location.

We provide professional, private, and focused personal training- we are a fitness center, not just a gym. By this I mean that we take care of everything fitness; dieting (certified nutritionist/RN on site), weight loss, mass gain/muscle gaining, athletic training for the student athlete looking for the D1-3 college experience, or an education into the fitness lifestyle.

Please check out my facebook page at Ultimate Results at South Riding (both group and page-PLEASE LIKE for the sake of a young man from the city trying to make it!) and call 703-220-6917 or email ursrfitness@gmail.com if you are interested! We are an up and coming company that was spun from a company that was becoming complacent with their positions in the industry-MY JOB IS MY PASSION AND THAT IS WHAT IS FUELING THIS COMPANY. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Sincere regards,

NAF

ps: we are doing an event at the Riding Plaza Giant this weekend, saturday and sunday 1-330/4 about our company and doing a promotion for free sessions! come by and talk to Nicholas!

The worst gym in Fairfax is the Gold's in Tysons Corner, hands down. I tried this out a few times because I'm a Gold's member and I can use any of the corporate-owned gyms, but I don't think I could go in there ever again.

-No women. I mean none. Ever.

-Members have no gym etiquette. Weights/equipment never put back.

-They let homeless guys use the bathroom. There are usually weirdos in the locker room charging ancient laptops or re-organizing their little grocery carts.

-Nonexistent A/C.

-If you forget your headphones that day, just turn around and go home. They play a horrendous mix of teen pop, gay club music, and hipster trash. Its not even real hipster trash - its the hipster trash that has been picked up my a major label to be pushed on suburban teens.

hahaha +1 that whole analysis is spot on. I have belonged to 3 gyms over the past 5 years.
1-sport & health tysons is the best gym in the area by far. There is to much shit for me to go over on what they got go in there for a free trial day you will love it
2- xsport - is almost just as good as S&H but you have to bring your own locks which blows...and is overall smaller but has about the same equipment throughout. not as many classes though
3- golds gym by far is the shittiest gym I have ever belonged too. end of story.
