Auto Inspection Rules in Virginian - vehicle over 25 years old
Posted by: JTS Brown ()

My 91 Auto just reached 25 years old and I got it inspected and also did the emissions, which I found out I didn't need at 25 years.
Now I will get my tags, just regular tags, not antique tags so I can continue to drive it without restrictions of an antique car.

Now I know that I do not need "emissions" any longer with this 25 year old car.

What about next year when I purchase tags, again regular tags, will I need to get an inspection done when the car is greater than 25 years old? If not, do you just rip off the old inspection sticker from 2017?

Anyone know.

Unless you have antique tags, all vehicles need inspected.

Correction to my post above...all vehicles with regular tags need a safety inspection, but vehicles over 25 years old do not need the emissions inspection.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, JTS but...

As someone who can own and maintain a 25 year old vehicle, I would let it go. Lesson learned. If you have an ongoing relationship with the shop in question and bring work there frequently, then you might consider asking, "Since I received an emissions test which wasn't required, would it be possible to apply the payment for that emissions test to future service?" And be prepared for them to say no and then walk away...

But, I promise you this...if you go in there like the typical, entitled NOVA douche-canoe and say something like, "Hey fucker...what kind of shop are you running here? You guys totally fucked me! You charged me for an emissions test I didn't need and I want my fucking money back! Now!" They're going to laugh at you and walk away...

I agree with you on the "let it go". Lesson learned.
But their are plenty of shop fuckers that triple prices on parts to long dedicated customers. Bunch of vultures.

Refer to the vehicle registration form they send in the mail. It will indicate whether emissions inspection is req'd.

Contact the Virginia State Police to register a formal complaint, and request a audit of the inspection facility.

This should get your money returned, and let the inspector that people are aware of their dishonest business practices.

What's dishonest about that? You went in and requested a service. Not their fault it wasn't legally required. For all they know, you are a tree-hugger and care about your carbon footprint.

I already said "let it go" lesson learned, it was my error. I didn't have the registration form with me at the time. My screw up.
It's not the end of the world......just lost a good dinner.

You are correct... in the future, have it inspeceted for safety only. There is no "sticker" sor emissions, and the DMV should automatically not ask for emmisions testing to be done every two years because the vehicle is over 25 years old.
If you decide next year to re-designate it as an antique, it will save you the hassle of having it inspected, and the fee is a one-time, permanent resistation fee instead of having to pave about $50 every year. But keep in mind that you still have to "self-inspect" the vehicle, sign a document that it is in compliance, and could still be cited for any defective equipment. Antique vehicles may be used for "pleasure drives" which could mean just about anything, but every day use and daily commuting is espressly prohibited.

But couldn't a pleasure drive mean when I am stopped "well, I was on my way to the mechanics shop". Has to be a lot of variables for just about anything.

Do you have to notify your insurance company and will it change your rates? Just throwing that out there.

I would also like to add that if you don't pursue a refund on the unnecessary emissions test, which is your privilege...I would NOT take my car there for future service.

Why would you take your business and your money to a place who would allow you to pay for a service that was unnecessary? This is NOVA, the 703, the 571...there are many, many quality shops who would love the opportunity to try to become your preferred shop.

I think all cars and trucks regardless of age or mileage should be subject to emissions inspections.

It will help reduce global warming, and remove old cars from the road - Allowing for more hybrid cars and trucks.

I only went to this station for the emissions test, it is not where I take the car for preferred maintenance. I was just driving by and I saw not one car in line so I just pulled right in.

I have the same exact situation .. 1991 car I'm almost done working on.

Can I get antique tags this year and then switch to regular tags, once I'm done fixing it up?

I understand antique tagged cars do not need either safety or emmissions, but can only be driven on weekends, holidays and to and from the shop.

anyone know?

SameSame, you are correct. But, you can put antique tags on the car, and get an inspection, and then drive it like a normal vehicle. Lots of people put antique plates on their POS and then think they can drive anywhere. Not so.

Please do NOT put antique plates on and then drive it around as you regular daily driver. The people who actually own legitimate antique cars worked very hard to get the law passed through the General Assembly. If the state feels the law is getting abused, they could go back and change it which would be very bad for antique car owners and hobbyists.

For that reason, those who own legitimate antique vehicles tend to frown upon people who put their situation in jeopardy.
