Winter storm Titan set to hit Late Sunday and into Monday
Posted by: weathercenter ()
Date: February 27, 2014 04:57PM

On Monday, the ice accumulation zone is likely to be situated across portions of the Mid-Atlantic states depending on exactly where cold ground temperatures and warm air aloft line up, the ice threat could range from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., to a more southerly zone that might include Richmond and Norfolk, Va.

If you live in any of these areas, you should prepare for the possibility of a significant ice storm. This amount of ice will most definitely lead to severe power outages and dangerous road conditions. Expect downed trees and power lines.

The models are starting to point toward and even better chain of ice and snow and as long as the models stay constant there is a very high chance of no school Monday or Tuesday and possibly even Wednesday as temperatures are suppose to stay in the single digits and low 30's for the high's

What an ice storm looks like. This amount of ice can put 6,000 lbs. of weight on a single power line ultimately leading to massive power failure around the Fairfax, D.C. area

This is no hype, expect anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of ice and a little snow on top of that if the storm shifts north, which would cripple the power lines leading to massive power failure. If the storm shifts even farther south, which the latest model runs are leading towards, we could see 8-12+ inches of snow. I do expect a lot less accumulations on the roads anywhere from 5-8 due to upper 40's to low 50's expected on Sunday. A lot higher amounts will accumulate on grassy surfaces and areas that receive a lot of shade. However one of these scenarios will occur and neither is ideal so expect cancellations and possibly a mass failure of power across northern Virginia, Which could take up to a week for everyone to get power restored.

The probability for school closing is very very high on Monday and Tuesday. I almost guarantee no school on both these days due to temps reaching single digits Monday night and not getting above freezing Tuesday. The chance of this becoming an all rain event is almost non existent anymore and we are guaranteed some sort of winter storm whether it be a lot of ice and a little snow or a little ice and a lot of snow is still up for debate.

Awesome. I'm going to check in here on Sunday night just to make sure, but now I'm already thinking I won't even set my alarm for Monday morning.

Alright the latest report is this one is going to be more of a snow storm. Expect light freezing rain late Sunday night and then it will turn into heavy snow. We are looking at 5-8 inches of snow for most of Fairfax, but we could see locally higher amounts of 8-12 inches depending on where those heavy snow bands set up. The high of 36 degrees Monday doesn't mean rain that high of 36 is going to be reached at 12p.m Sunday night. As the storm progresses farther east we are going to see the temps get colder and colder and possibly reaching a bone chilling 3 degrees early Tuesday morning. Expect schools to be closed Monday and Tuesday and a high probability of a 2 hour delay Wednesday and a small probability of a cancellation Wednesday. One other thing to consider is the low coming from the south pushing moist air directly over D.C. could possibly bring an area of 12+ inches of snow. This forecast will be updated as the storm progresses, but by looking at the latest model runs this storm is more likely to dump more snow then not. Stay tuned for the latest forecast.

Update: We are now looking at 8-12 inches for most of Fairfax and and higher amounts locally from 12-18 inches, depending on where those heavier snow bands set up. Expect this storm to be as big or even bigger than the last large storm where we received
about 14 inches of snow. Also unlike the last storm temps are going to dip down to a bone chilling 3 degrees!!!! Monday night and not even get above freezing Tuesday. The D.c
Fairfax area is going to receive the worst the storm can bring and we are right at the center of it. Check back later tonight and tomorrow for possibly higher amounts of snow.

Last update till tomorrow. As of now expect a little icing Sunday night and then very heavy snow Monday accumulating 8-12 inches. Later in the day tomorrow we will be able to tell which specific locations will receive 12+ as of now it looks to be a little west of D.C. So us here in Fairfax could be seeing 12+ and a bone chilling low of 0 degrees on Monday. Stay tuned tomorrow for more exact snow accumulation predictions.

With temps dropping into the low single digits and the lack of pre treating the roads due to rain before the storm i would give a 95% chance of no school tomorrow. Enjoy your 4 day weekend.
