Hard drive data recovery services

Anyone ever have data from a hard drive recovered with a drive recovery service in FFX? Care to comment on how it went in terms of cost/service?

I called one (will remain nameless) and it seemed like the same pitch the used car guys give you to buy the special-deluxe warranty. Slimey.

Got a 400gb drive, linux + EXT3 file system, crashed heads (well, it's real noisy from the little pieces flying around inside of it).

I've used OnTrack in the past. They're pretty much the best in the business. You send in your drive, they'll tell you what they can recover and how much it'll cost. It's not cheap; I think 400GB would be in the $750-1000 range, but that's a ballpark estimate.

Try freezing it first. Works. Look it up.

I heard about the freezing, but with all the pieces rumbling around inside the drive, I didn't think it would work. The heads sound like they're on their own now.

I had good luck with Cedar PC - the charged something like $75-85 to recover the crashed hard drive on my HP desktop and were able to get at least 80% of the data which seemed pretty good to me.

I'll ask our IT guys. My old desktop at my office was destroyed about 3 years ago - water pipe burst in the kitchen one floor up from me - and its near my office, so the water found its way into my office.

About 200k in damage firm wide - including my desktop. Because I work with some very confidential stuff, I store those types of files on secure and partitioned drive. That had to be specially restored.

I think it was close to $1000 for the restore.

Last time I was at MicroCenter they were advertising data recovery services. And not "undelete your files" but actual "take out the platters and perform a bit by bit copy to a new disk."

Haven't used them though so can't recommend.

My company has used SalvageData in Herndon before but they were expensive http://www.salvagedata.com/location/washington-dc/

try a hard dirve dock. I had a damaged hard drive and was able to transfer about 30gb of picture an other info onto another hard drive. They are quite handy you can buy any hard drive with this dock you can use it as a back drive.I used the v4 from wiebe tech.

Not a fan of spending that kind of money but To my knowledge SalvageData is the only certified one in the region with a certified cleanroom to get the work done. We vetted and asked all the others about their facilities and capabilities a year ago and none of them are able to prove it except for SalvageData.

If recovery of the data us a must I would go with SalvageData ..

My 2 cents

I had a Mac that crashed, and i took it to TTR data recovery, the experience was quick and professional. After shopping around their price was the most affordable and reasonable. strongly recommend.

Go to www.grc.com and get SpinRite. Its not free, but is the best thing to recover data. Save a lot and do this yourself. Costs like 60 bucks and its yours to use from then on.
