Yes, I do. Hope you are sitting down...

At precisely 1:26pm, you posted a new thread on FFU that annoyed all of us.

A message from WOODSON HS
Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the unexpected death today of one our students – 10th grader Jack Chen. Jack was an excellent student, bright and cheerful and very well liked by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Jack was in my p.e class this year. It's crazy. We have the same counselor, and we would have gone together to pick classes next year together. He was such a nice guy. I have no idea what happened to him, came here trying to figure it out.

Can you guess/speculate why he was out at 5:30am?

Does Woodson have early lifting for football/wrestling? at school that early?

Think he was coming home from somewhere else?

In my opinion this website is extremely repulsive. So many people just talking trash about one another, having no remorse or proof of the allegations being made. This site is filled with people who have nothing better to do than hurt other from behind a computer screen. Why this should be a website about helping others and passing information around a community not a war zone where people put other people on trial and say horrible things about people. This is no better than cyber bullying except the anonymous names prevent you form having to reveal who they are. This is like a middle school where people do nothing but start rumors about others to hurt peoples feelings.

I hope that you read this message and think, about your future activity and really only present information that is factual and helpful to others in the northern Virginia area. Put yourself in the person your about to hurt before you post your message.

I would suspect this was a planned suicide. My question to all these so called "good" friends of his posting in various threads.......you all must not have known him very well if you couldnt sense some deeper issues that were bothering him.

There are a lot of jerks on this site but that is the internet, maturity is not only unneeded but made fun of. Never expect to find sensitivity on here, but you can laugh at the assortment of ignorant idiots. Others point this out and are attacked, I am sure I will also so just laugh at the comments and know they are a sample of the people who drive on the beltway alongside you. There is a "great collection" on here. Lots of unahppy people who could benefit from a little therapy.

I have no idea why he was out at 5:30, but school starts pretty early and that's around the time when I wake up. He was all the way out by Tyson's Corner, so I doubt he was on his way to school. I didn't really know him all that well, but from the outside he looked like a happy guy, with lots of friends and lots going for him. He was very talented at sports, and really smart.

FYI the accident occurred in Fairfax Station within 30 second walking distance of his house. Where did you come up with Tyson's Corner where no VRE runs is puzzling.

Cool let's hear it for the spell police. One word spelled wrong and someone has to point it out. Forget the crappy attitude of posters on the site. If you can't see how funny you all are...well you ARE!

Wow guys!

Firstly, my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jack Chen.

Secondly,
Guys, Get off the these machines,
get a life and
make a change in the world!!

Death is not something to talk about, it is something you wake you up and realize you have very little control off. The incident in any situation is the result of action, but I would like to know the food for cause; therefore, control your criticism amongst others and appreciate all you have and learn to share positive thoughts! Maybe if you shared time with him, he wouldn't have did what he did! But nobody has time nowadays, we see all so busy on our mind controlling machines.

I hope you can console and be a true friend to someone and hopefully save their life, by being there for them.
Start today : be there for his family, do a good deed, and always be a great role model.
As you found out, life is too short.

You are equally to blame. You come to this repulsive website to feed off your morbid desire to find out what happened to your classmate just so you can make yourself feel better about yourself. It probably would have been nice if you had showed Jack this kind of attention when it really mattered...When he was alive and hurting.

You are suggesting 14 and 15 year olds can identify when a classmate is hurting? Really? People hide behind a smile and don't let others know what is going on inside their turmoil.

Please, kids do stupid shit to themselves all the time -- go through a goth phase, cutting, drug use, drinking. If that doesn't scream for attention IDK what does.

Friends of Jack Chen -

This is not the place to come for comfort or information about your friend's death. Please don't feel like you have to defend him from the horrible people who post thoughtless and cruel things here. Jack's pain is over now. You don't need to worry about him anymore.

For those of you who are in shock and pain because of his death, you might find some comfort in this handbook for survivors of suicide - those whose friends and loved ones have died by suicide.

http://www.suicidology.org/c/document_library/get_file?folderId=229&name=DLFE-73.pdf

A friend's death by suicide doesn't mean you were a bad friend or you did anything wrong. Most people who die by suicide are dying from the diseases of depression or bipolar disorder. You can love someone very much, be very good to them, pay close attention to them, listen to them, be there for them, and still lose them to depression by suicide. It is not your fault. We can all be kinder to one another and dedicate ourselves to being better people in the memory of a loved one who died by suicide, but please don't turn your grief inward and hate yourself. It won't help your friend. Just move forward and do your best with the rest of this short life we have.

If you are a high school student reading this, and you are feeling despair, please call Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)

You may also find comfort from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention site:

To This is a Joke right - you are an idiot. You have no idea what teens in this area go through. From peer pressure, to school pressure, to parental pressure. A kid doesn't commit suicide for attention...that is idiotic. Tabitha suggested these friends should have cared about him before he died. No 15 year knows how to identify that a kid has a problem...that is all I was saying.

This didn't happen near Tysons or Manassas. Jack was near his home; the line goes to/from Manassas. My Woodson daughter said he'd tried out for track the day before, so I wonder if he wasn't getting in a run before school. Woodson starts at 7:20, so a 5:30 am run is not inconceivable. In fact, a lady wearing headphones was struck by a VRE train in January, and some said she did not hear the train.

Whatever happened, the loss of one so young is painful. To "From a Survivor", this forum IS a place to come for comfort and information. My sophomore is scared, as I am, especially since on Jack's facebook, he's described as a happy person. As a parent, I fear that if this was a suicide, no one would have seen it coming. It disturbs me like Bryan Glenn's death disturbs me--how am I to protect my child? What might I miss?

For those who wonder "why Woodson?", I can tell you from experience that some on the staff treat students with extreme disrespect. Another daughter was accused of a serious charge, and questioned without her parents being advised. When I asked Why, the teacher replied "because we don't want to encourage the students to lie." That's not a paraphrase; it's a direct quote. It got worse from there, and the principal himself rebuked her for calling in her parents. From the beginning, she wanted to surrender her right to fight the charge, because "no one will listen", and because she feared retribution. From the teacher. From the principal.

Woodson parents, be aware of this. Ask your student if he/she feels helpless. Talk to your kids. See if they refrain from challenging unfair practices out of fear. Stand by them. Email/call teachers with whom your student has issues. Guard them afterward, and call the administration on perceived retribution.

Above all, keep telling them that people who don't get A's go on to live happy lives! That isn't the message at school. The pressure at Woodson is INTENSE. Remind them that, if they don't get A's though they tried their best, it's not because they're stupid. (My daughter thinks this.) It's because God didn't give them this particular gift, but He gave them others, and that you love them no matter what. Think on how hard it is when you're best isn't good enough, and reassure them.
I pray for us all. God bless Jack's family and friends. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Angry Person,
I'm sorry for whatever happened to you to make you so angry. It stinks. Some people are mean. Some just don't think. It stinks. Not everyone is like that. I don't know you, but I care that you hurt. I can't do much but pray for you, so that's what I'll do. I also help out with cookies on Wednesday. There is good in the world. Really there is. We adults screw up some times. Sorry about that.

I pulled my kids out of public school and enrolled them in a private school. I had to work 3 jobs and my wife worked 2, but it was definitely worth it.

Maybe if its really that bad, the Woodson parents should band together and demand a public hearing. The only thing that really cures rot is sunshine.

It's refreshing to read intelligent, thoughtful, caring comments on this thread! It's horrifying to read some of the posts related to these incidents. All these kids (whether they be Woodson, Langley, Robinson, lake Braddock, Oakton, Springfield, etc. etc) need to know that there are many of us out here that care. This site is a breeding ground for hate, stupidity, selfishness and outright stupidity at times. One gain, its refreshing to read intelligent, thoughtful comments. We need to pray for all of our kids, not just those at Woodson nor FCPS.

there is an inordinate amount of pressure on teenagers today, period!

Long overdue for new leadership at Woodson. The School has created a failed climate that results in our children taking their lives. The School's leadership is a threat to the community and must not be allowed to continue to push this failed doctrine onto our kids. It is time for Woodson's leadership to accept responsibility. It is time for a culture change, which is best started at the top. Common thread is Woodson. Loyalty to leadership is the right thing to do if the leadership is sound, not so in the case. WE DEMAND CHANGE!!!!

Jack Chen was my neighbor, and I knew him along time. I went to schools with him from when i was nine, till i graduated. I, also being a Woodson student 2 years ago, woke up every morning at 5:30 to go to school, because the bus came between 6:30-6:45 AM (he was an earlier stop on the route and probably had to wake up earlier). The tracks run throughout the neighborhood, and right in the backyards of many of the kids' houses. As kids, we would occasionally walk by the tracks for fun, and many of us from the neighborhood would hear the train whistles blowing, especially early in the morning. Most of knew there were trains always running between 5-6 am,because we always heard them/saw them go by. Jack was a smart, athletic kid and a good kid to hang with (I'll never forget playing football with him over the weekends and getting junk food together). I'll never understand why he did it, but I hope the reasons for why the kids of Woodson have been committing suicide disappears soon, and never returns.

so are you trying to tell me that our principle is supposed to know every little thing that goes on in all 2300 kids in the school? its not the leadership at woodson. its the cirriculum of the county and the pressure that they put on us to get 5's on ap tests and a 4.3 gpa. everyone has their own way of doing things and when you make one standard way of doing things, thats when it brings out this side of a freaking student. I dont know if you are smart enough to know this but not everyones brain works the same. of course you would have to have a brain to understand anything at all. and to all of you people who will keep on reposting WE WANT CHANG and shit like that, then you can go screw yourselves cause you clearly have no idea what kind of stress takes place at all high schools in this county. Yost has been with us through and through, and i dont know a single other person who would do a good job running this school.

That is exactly correct. Think about what young adult males were doing all through human history. They were doing real things, sometimes very violent (war), but they were out doing things in the world. Now we put them in a very large building and ask them to color in circles from 15 to 18. Then the ideal is to send them to college and have them sit in large lecture classes for two years, after that they may move into more specific classes where they are preparing for a job. If they are very good athlete in high school, they get onto the field or court and do something physical.

Does this seem like the best way to handle almost every male in the population? Wouldn't some alternative, productive path be helpful? I don't what made this young man want to kill himself, but I know this is a great problem for American males today. (And females too.)

I recommend reading the book "The Endless Adolescence." It discusses this.

I didn't know him personally, i had only seen him around.I did however know his sister very well. The morning of Jack's death I was thinking of doing the same thing. I was at my bus stop and all of a sudden I heard the trains horn blowing like crazy from behind my neighbors house. That conformed it for me, I was going to do it...jump in front of the train. i was planning to do it the next morning when the news came in. It was him. Jack. My neighbor, acquaintance, a part of my best friend was gone. And that changed my mind and I'm still alive to this day. Jack Chen saved my life and every year on February 26 I take that day to respect and remember him.

Grace, you are the reason that Jack Chen will never really die, because he will always be remembered by those that loved him.
