After reading a few threads of it, I have decided to never visit the area. Great post. As far as I'm concerned, Fairfax Underground is the greatest site on the Internet...sort of the last bastion of truly anonymous free speech. And it's right here in my own backyard. It feels similar to the modem days with Usenet and BBS. And it just seems to draw in a generally male, white, middle-aged crowd (the actual most hated group of people in this country, I might add) with the similar style.

Let's face it, there's a ton of idiots here, but also lots of sharp people too. And it shows in the quality of some of the posts. If you want to improve your odds of making it big career-wise, you're going to either DC, NY, or LA/SF, so we're over-concentrated with very smart, opinionated people who might just have an unpopular notion that would be looked down if expressed publicly. So there's lots of steam blown off here, so to speak. And I imagine, with the exception of our famous clown car quartet (quintet?, sextet?), most posters here are just like me...white, 40-60, a good income, have a spouse & kid(s), and a live a normal and law-abiding sub/urban life. And they're here to catch up on what's going on locally while filtering through a lot of trash and garbage along the way.

One man's opinion on this: Its not cool to call out names of non public figures. I don't do it and to the best of my knowledge, don't comment on threads that do it. That said, a search of that very long fire fighters thread has her name showing up a few times. While it sure didn't help the situation, to call that cyber-bullying is rather over the top, but that's what news orgs and websites do. Something as dark as suicide is much more deep and complex that a couple of dipshits posting a name on a website.
