I think that you have your evaluation incorrect. Yes, the West Springfield boys left the court without shaking hands and were brought back out. However, they, led by the big man you mentioned placing his plaque on the floor, attempted to shake hands but the West Potomac kids (rightfully so) were busy celebrating in the stands with their fans. The refs in this game were beyond inconsistent. The big man that got ejected for the second technical did everything right on the second instance. The WP player threw his shoulder into the players chest hard enough to knock him off balance and the big man went down. As a coach, you tell your players to never react or retaliate when that happens and in this case the young man did what he was supposed to. I ask you, what in that back and forth results in a technical for WS's big man? And remember, it happened literally ten feet in front of me. At the end of the day, in that particular case, WS should NOT have been penalized. That being said, if we are giving him a technical for the flop, then WP's #22 should have received one in the first half for his flop in the lane that started when the WS guard was still two steps away from him.
At the end of the day, West Springfield dug themselves too deep of a hole in this game going down by 18 at one point. They fought really hard to get back into the game and had a legitimate shot to win the game. Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for West Potomac, the shots didn't fall. The point guard for WP (#1) was the difference maker. Probably the best small guard in the region that I've seen.
At the end of the day though, remember that these are teenagers. They don't always respond the way that you expect them to. Coaches and officials always talk about the "teaching moments" during competition. Instead of bashing and name calling a bunch of teenagers, try commending them on the fact that they eventually did make the right decision and showed humility.
And the big man put his plaque down on the ground and continued to clap and congratulate everyone else that won the award with BOTH hands. Something he could not have done had he been holding his plaque.
