(Please stay home) Snow is falling...

Wow, went for a walk with my one kid, as the snow had begun to fall and *someone* wanted to go sledding...

Walking through the neighborhood, I got towards the main road out and saw traffic at nearly a standstill. While the neighborhood roads were very slick, I had envisioned the main road to be fine, it was not.

a few Police cars were assisting a 4 car accident and while standing there, 3 more went into the ditch. As those cars somehow pulled themselves out, the ditch would fill back up each time the light turned red, causing cars to scramble for traction.

While history has taught us that the majority of Northern VA residents cannot drive for the first snow (or second, third, or fourth), this one is actually pretty bad with the underlying ice layer, and the deceptive snow on top of that.

Beautiful, yes - Dangerous too.

Be safe!

You are correct. I went out and saw flares across the road, tried to go back and three cars got stuck going up a hill. None of the damn roads are plowed at all. Had to park the car and walk back.

Yeah, the center of McLean was a slippery mess around 2, saw a few cars spinning their tires or sliding to a stop, friggin morons. Also, there were a couple people who insisted on driving about 5 mph- now I realize the roads have snow on them, but theres no reason to hold up traffic by crawling along like that. The funniest/most annoying thing about this kind of weather are the grocery stores. I needed to get some beer for the games, and the Giant on Chain Bridge was a mob scene. People stocking up on lots of bread and toilet paper, I had to wait over 20 minutes in line. LOL, I wonder if these people just sat at home all afternoon eating bread and shitting like maniacs.

Most of us dont, but a lot of people suck at driving here even when the weather is GOOD.

Out & about today, I saw so many bent up guard rails where they were fine last week - clearly the majority of folks had difficulties :-(

I agree that many of us can do fine in bad weather, or have the common sense to stay home. Sadly, many do not.

Roads are littered with cars, and even a motorcycle was seen on the side of the Beltway today!

Will we see more of the same by the end of the week w/ round # 2???

Be safe!

Driving in the snow is pretty easy, I grew up doing it and it doesn't worry me. However, what does worry me is seeing someone on a cell phone at the wheel of a minivan with diplomat plates driving too fast for conditions, sliding at every stop, spinning at every start. I try to stay the heck home because of shit like that.

All I can say is today was a great morning to go to the DMV to get my driver's license renewed. It took about ten minutes and that was including the vision test and waiting for the photo. I grew up in Cleveland and this is nothing.

Can somebody please tell people in Jeep's and 4WD that I can see they have a 4WD. They don't have to drive like a-holes everytime it snows.

LMAO everytime I saw a 4WD in a ditch today! Your 4WD's have the same traction as everybody else on ICE, sometimes worse! Give us a break!

Thanks. I've noticed most VA drivers cannot drive at all, regardless of weather situation :)

Good times. I drove about 10 miles on 7100 after the snow started falling and witnessed no less than 11 accidents, 2 of which I saw unfold right in front of me. Sorry but I can't help but cheering like a fool whenever I see someone in their 4 ton ute go crashing off the road because they think they're invincible. Yeah, newflash. High center of gravity, excessive weight, lots of momentum, limited traction and driving like an a-hole puts you into a ditch. Use your brains out there people, we can overcome stupidity if we try!

People in their 4wd's. LOL. "I have four wheel dirve so I can drive on snow and ice" Well, you can, but you will crash.

I've always wanted to bump a massively old thread, and this one seeems relevant to this weekend's interests...

I have to say, I'm looking forward to volunteering for INOVA Alexandria again this weekend. They called me today to confirm I'd be available to help. While there may be a few 4WD vehicles in ditches, I can guarantee that there will be a ton more 2WD vehicles stranded on slight inclines than 4WD vehicles in ditches. Once the snow starts falling, it won't be long until the morons come out in droves looking to clog up traffic every opportunity they get.

Me too. Staying in the basement and posting on Fairfax Underground all weekend is a good plan.
