Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
You know they spend 10's of millions of dollars to pay a group of people who together speak 125 different languages to act as translators for parent teacher conferences, PTA meetings and just about anything you can think of. All a parent has to do is request a translator be present for ANY school related function and the county will have one there free of charge. Free of charge to the parent, yet paid for by you and me. F'ing ridiculous.

She is in a showdown with the Board of Supervisors. Hopefully they don't blink. The diversified school system is running the rest of County services into the ground. And don't buy their bullshit that everyone comes here for the school, people come here for jobs and the lazy asses that come here are here for the freebies and handouts. Teachers are not leaving for Arlington, Loudon or Prince William either, just union propaganda.
Until we get good Conservative leadership in Fairfax County schools, we'll continue to degrade until we are not even in the top 20 public school systems.
Virginia is a Right to Work state. Moreover, as a Fairfax County taxpayer, I maintain that teachers have nothing to say about the situation than I do.
And I'll continue fighting Democrat attempts to shittify Fairfax County Public Schools.
Fucking move back to Bumfuckistan then and wuit fucking bitching. You probably don't even have kids because that would require somebody to have slept with you.
MVHS hired Menville "Flip" Flippen. Hopefully they did not match the fee he charged elsewhere for a commencement speech, that fee was $10,000! In any case, his reviews are at best mixed. The horse training stuff is just downright weird as well.

You spend all day everyday on a site in Fairfax County Virginia, 75% democrat down the line, which every year not only votes for a democrat but votes so heavily so that it completely alters the politics of the state. You come here every fuckin day to spout off about whatever Fox news has told you to spout off about, and it changes nothing.
So pathetic, but thanks for the laughs. Keep posting here all your crazy red helm tinfoil bullshit, it just makes more Fairfax residents vote democrat. We all know you are actually paid by the campaigns though, so it's ok. You are just shills.
To put it bluntly; years of ufunded mandates by the state ( via Federal DOE), legal precedent due to lawsuits about making sure Mongo the retard gets a personal assistant, moonbeam the moonbat nice-to-have programs like daily cabs to/from school for juvenile delinquents and no separate education tax is why we're in the mess we're in.
Separate the Schools alottment from regular county revenue, give them their own dedicate revenue stream and let them live within their means. Also fuck Gerry the drunk, before he fled for Congress he lowered the tax rate due to record high assessments and then the market tanked. The spineless members of the BOS won't cut their pet socialist projects nor raise taxes in fear of being voted out. In the end, it will cost more $$$ and cause irreparable damage to the county government.

America the great is fading away. Goodbye, you will be missed
I notice a lot of people in this forum seem to have a better grasp on how to handle the FCPS budget deficit since Karen Garza is a "joke".
I am interested to know how you would handle the situation better than Garza.

They can't answer that question, the peeps here can only spout anger and insults to try and prove a point.

60 administrators showed up at Wildfire Tuesday night for dinner to talk about the budget. They put it all on one pcard. What a bill. They set a record.
Garza thinks the sky if falling because there are 2 hundred vacancies. Check out the listings, most are for special ED. They have trouble filling and retaining those positions because no one wants to have to change dirty diapers, watch kids drool all day or get assaulted by the mental cases they mainstream.
In my course at GMU we looked at the research showing beyond a doubt that until and unless teacher isolation is recognized and dealt with, NO INNOVATIONS OF ANY KIND WILL WORK!!
Having said that, can you understand why this profession has more fads come along and reappear after a number of years only to fail again? It is because in a profession that should be highly communicative among its members, sharing successful ideas that work, we find teachers isolated by the way they are scheduled and by their own fears of letting those "outsiders in."
One example that screams at anyone listening to their plight is that teachers need TIME during the day to meet with colleagues and to discuss common problems, solutions, and teaching strategies. Until the public AND the administrators realize that time spent in the classroom with students is NOT the only valuable use of teachers' time, teachers will continue to be isolated and educators will blindly continue to seek solutions that are doomed to fail.
Ok here's one for you. Get rid of all day kindergarten. Or charge parents who want all day kindergarten. Kids that age don't learn much, and I've had teachers admit it's only day care. Look at the study from 2015 - it's big bucks.
To Ms.Tell Me and Ms. Deep,
re: ...how to handle the situation better than Ms.Garza
While your request is laudatory but at the same time is asinine and juvenile.
To be succinct: re: bloated FCPS budget. It is not the job of concerned citizens how to handle the situation better than Ms. Garza.
FCPS is paying; in many cases: 6 figure salaried (Professionals?)to be responsible to brain storm, implement and provide for the education of FX County students while: MOST IMPORTANTLY: living within the confines of the budgeted $ alloted to FCPS.
It is specifically not the responsibility of the taxpayers of FX County to also a waste their precious time (unpaid monetarily of course) to do FCPS jobs.
That being said,it is their right to expect and demand FCPS to stay within budget $ provided.
Eliminate full day kindergarten, increase class size slightly, cut down on the number of assistant high school principals, cut out some administrative dead wood and increase RE taxes by about a half of a mil. If any other cuts are needed do a line item audit of the budget and contracts.
make kindergarten 1/2 day, abandon IB for AP, make all sports self-funding, cut language immersion, charge more for student parking, charge more for after-hour use of school property, increase distance for walkers (i.e., less busses)

Start with verifications to qualify for free lunches ....right now just turn in the form and you are in. Don't think our intruders from south of the border aren't telling each other that? For Christ sake, how much effort does it take to buy and an make some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?
FCPS has spent a decade now making do with less. The easy cuts were all made long ago. So were the hard ones, and we as a county continue to pay a steep price for that. The schools need more money. It's as simple as that.
The school system says its need more money, its as simple as that. Every other county agency has lost positions that go unfilled, use equipment past its useful life, and have to jump through hoops with justifications to get things needed to complete their mission. Garza simply threatens and gets. Wonder why long time tax paying residents are leaving for other places in droves and in the meantime their place is filled with transients looking for free handouts. A few more tax increases and the system will crash. Meanwhile Garza will on to her next big thing.
In many states, school districts levy their own taxes. FCPS cannot, and so they must rely on the County which should start adequately funding its schools instead of giving cozy deals to real estate developers.

No. School boards with taxing ability have failed every time.
In some municipalities school boards can propose a budget for a vote by citizens. If they do a good job explaining their proposals to the voters, then the budget passes. If not, the voters say no and only the programs required by the state are funded, referred to as an austerity budget.
The voters are basically deciding how much they are willing to pay in property taxes for schools.

A. No one can do that.
B. It wouldn't help if anyone could.

Interesting claim. In the real world, the vast majority of the nation's 15,000 local school districts has taxing authority.

Property taxes in our case fund county expenses in general. They need to be raised substantially, with the bulk of the increase going to FCPS. It's nice that we can call ourselves a low-tax area, but not when those low taxes mean worse and worse outcomes in our schools. Our high-ranking schools are a key to our ongoing econonmic success. After a decade of neglect and abuse, we desperately need to start investing in them again.

You really believe more than 50% of the entire county budget should be handed to the school board? Most of us stopped smoking that shit a long time ago.
Human Resources should be helping the program managers fill these so called jobs . I can tell you that there are a lot of job applicants willing to work for FCPS but there have been some cases where HR hasn't responded to the applicant. I can think of three people that have Virginia Teacher Licensure but still remain unemployed.
You are right! Special Education is very challenging at times and especially when you don't have the support of the school administration.

You can argue about a decade of neglect, however, it is not due to a lack of funds. Have you ever wondered about the identical, annual, chicken little rhetoric about the lack of funds and then the school board trots out and funds expensive social engineering initiatives during the year and finally ends up with a surplus at the end of the year?
