FCPS Garza Shuts Down Science in Light of Woodson Incident: At least she makes it look like she's doing something

From the desk of the Karen:

A message from FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dear FCPS Parents,

In FCPS, the safety of our students and staff is always the top priority in all of our schools. Please know that FCPS is cooperating fully in the ongoing investigation of the incident Friday.

In response to the serious accident at W.T. Woodson High School and out of an abundance of caution, I have directed the following actions be taken:

- Immediate suspension of the use of any and all open flames in all FCPS science classroom until further notice

- Conduct a thorough review of FCPS science curriculum

- Review current guidance to FCPS science teachers to ensure all concepts are taught in the safest possible manner and setting

- Require science safety updates for all FCPS high school science teachers to commence immediately, and all FCPS science teachers will be required to complete by the end of the semester

We will do everything we possibly can to ensure that this never happens again.

We are encouraged by the news from families of the Woodson students injured in Friday’s accident that their children are in good spirits. Our continued thoughts and hopes are with them as they continue the road to recovery. The strength and goodwill of the FCPS family has been clearly demonstrated over the past few days and is greatly appreciated by the Woodson community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Karen K. Garza
Superintendent

Looks like Karen picked up the phone when FCPS General Counsel called on Sunday afternoon.

Counsel is only interested in pretending to cover their asses and making things difficult.

These people should be whipping out the checkbook. This was probably gross negligence.

Trust me the lawyers always win. Plus Garza is a wimp. You're right she has to look like she's doing something. Every activity in school has some sort of risk to it. Instead of dealing with the issue of a teacher who made a mistake she has to ban acitivities for everyone. Congratulations Garza. Great leaderhip skills there.

Her next step will be to create additional positions at Gatehouse. Perhaps a few Science Safety Coordinator positions? Find some disgraced science teacher to sit at Gatehouse making documents, regulations, etc. but will never step foot in an actual classroom.

To create this position, more security, clinic, and janitorial personnel will be laid off. That's how Gatehouse rolls.

Hey I said this first.

They will certainly have to travel to California or Las Vegas and stay in a fancy hotel, etc. to attend a week long conference about this. There is plenty of information right on the Internet and FFU to refer to. Try reading the FCPS handbook on chemical safety.

Like anything, everyone is guilty until proven innocent. No different then with the UVA scandal last year.

Shut everything down, do a full review and castrate the program.

Sad that people got hurt, but the likely cause is nobody plays with fire or hazardous things anymore so people loose all respect and understanding for anything that may be dangerous.

At the end of the day there was a lack of understanding and judgement and someone did something stupid in the classroom. I am sure the teacher feels like crap and she will NEVER do the same thing again. The University of Hard Knocks is a great institution, but again, there was collateral damage.

Just like the clown that used his lighter to try to burn a spider while he was fueling up his vehicle at the gas station. Something tells me he will not do that again.

There are Darwin Awards for a reason, it is just tragic that others were injured, especially kids in the classroom.

The suspension of open flames will last for the remainder of the school year. AP Chemistry and AP Physics are currently being evaluated to determine the best course of action to take with regards to the students enrolled in these courses. The cirriculum for each of these courses mandates that a certain number of lab experiments have to performed and these experiments require the use of bunson burners and open flame. If these experiments can not be performed, these courses can not be considered equivalent to college level courses. Under consideration is withdrawing each student from the AP Chemistry or AP Physics course with a grade of "Pass," and renaming the course Honors Chemistry II or Honors Physics. Juniors who still wish to take the AP Chemistry or AP Physics course will be able to do so during the 2016/17 school provided the new cirriculum and safety guidance permits FCPS to continue to offer these courses. All FCPS should discuss the alternatives with theier guidance counselor as soon as possible!

That's cruel. Who wants to think about some burnt scarred-for-life teenager.

Yuk.
