As things stand, the maximum daily round-trip toll on I-66 would be $17. Of course, if you were stupid enough to live in some beyond-the-fringe exurban boondocks where you needed to use the DTR and that lovely privately-owned Greenway, you'd still pay the same tolls that you already do for that portion of your travel.

HOV for free alone you pay. I applaud attempts to encourage HOV usage by cars with multiple occupants. I do not agree that individuals should be able to use the HOV for a fee. Basically we have created a system where we tax the option to travel faster. Working middle class pay a premium for fast travel as do the wealthy. We dont provide adequate mass transportation so the poor are just out of luck. The rich could care less if they pay an extra $5200 bucks a year to get to work faster. For working families in the middle class thats a lot of $$$

Clearly you haven't lived outside of NoVa Dumbass. The situation here is different than in other parts of the state. We have plenty of roads. It is easily possible to go from anywhere in the County to anywhere in the County in a fairly direct manner and fairly quickly, provided nobody else is on the road. That isn't true in other parts of the state. The problem here is that we have way too many cars on our roads, and while we provide better transportation alternatives (Metro, VRE, busses and bike lanes) than you can find in most parts of this state, people will not give up their cars and use those alternatives.

We in NoVa are currently pumping an obscene amount of money into building Metrorail out to Dulles and beyond. This is chewing up large amounts of our transportation dollars, and it will chew up even more dollars in operating subsidies. For a significantly lower cost we could provide cheaper mass transit options which could more conveniently serve more people and spend money to fix up our decaying neighborhood streets. We have chosen not to do that though, because we'd rather spend our money on projects which help enrich real estate developers. That is our choice. Those living down state prefer to spend their share of the money to build connections where they don't exist, and to maintain the roads they have. If you've driven those roads, you might think they were the smarter ones.

You do realize that for Hillary to win, she must have Virginia. It follows that a successful governor with a liberal record -- T-mac could be one if he were to win the Va legislature -- would put her in the driver's seat to pick up Virginia, a state the GOP cannot afford to lose. This is a stupid move, and assuming my assessment is somehow political is nonsensical; it is plain to see that this is a costly political mistake from a man lacking in serious political experience.

This slogan is a great issue to rile up the Republican base to vote next week. It may even redirect NOVA unhappiness against the Republicans in southern Virginia for their years of failing to support transportation improvements in this region.

Voters along I-66 don't seem to be outraged by a multi-billion dollar I-66 improvement to increase movement of people. They don't seem particularly outraged at making it easier to get to local corridor parking, bus, and metro stations so that residents have freedom to choose to take public transportation if desired, since that will make traffic flow a little easier for drivers.

But allege that your money is going to someone else's local transportation project, and it gets at least some folks riled up.

That seems true even if that allegation is completely bogus, and the income from tolling of maybe $10-$30 Million annually will barely cover operating expenses of the HOV lane operations and the operations of the transit system.
