FCPS class sizes - is this normal?

Friend of mine just told me her 2nd grader has 30 classmates. It is not a school with surging enrollment so what gives?

Is this the new normal?

How many kids are in your kids' classes?

Is this an AAP class? If so, that's probably normal. If a regular class it seems high for FCPS.

Lots of things play into class sizes.

I think they need a minimum of 16 kids for an additional teacher or something in this range. There is also some upper number of kids that a class is required to have before they are split into a new classroom.

So 30 is not unusual, it is a large class, but I recall my 6th grader had 36 kids in a modular classroom. 30 2nd graders take up FAR less real estate then 30 6th graders.

It also depends on the Principal as well. We had a situation one years where the Principal pulled about 10 kids out of GE classes because they were too large and put them into the AAP classes. BUT the kids were not automatically in the AAP Program, they had to apply if they choose to move on with the AAP problem.

You should have heard the indignant AAP parents attitudes when they heard GE kids would be placed in the classrooms with their kids!!

I don't know if this is categorized as the norm. Last year my child's 3rd grade classroom had 29 students. His 2nd grade class was only 25 children. The difference of 4 children from 2nd to 3rd grade really had a negative impact on the teacher. I know class size is often authorized for increase when budget cuts are looming. There are current FCPS regulations regarding class size maximums broken out by grade on the fcps.edu website. In any case, it is a shame for both teachers and students that class sizes seem hanbitually bloated.

Actually if 2nd grade obviously not AAP. My experience was more like 20-24. But that was a few years ago. 30-32 was normal for AAP.

Its going up. We cut the budget every year while enrollment grows significantly. We go through this every year. Our teachers earn less than almost anyone in the area. Excellence.

22 T0 24 IN SECOND grade- if the school is not Title 1.
Is this school Title 1.

Class sizes can get up to 26 to 29. If kids are pulled out for special needs during the day, the class is be larger than others.

Call your local school Supervisor. They can explain this to you!
