Woman comes home to find metal object on the floor, hole in the ceiling. Report: Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board investigating.

A woman's home is in need of unusual repairs after she found what appears to be a piece of an airplane that had crashed through her dining room ceiling and landed in the floor.

The piece of metal is described as being a few inches long. Abby Baker told NBC Washington that her home is in the flight path for aircraft from Dulles International Airport.

"At first, I thought maybe a gas pipe burst or something, and then I found this piece here that I thought maybe was a pipe from a gas pipe,” Baker said. “But when I had the gas company come out, they identified it as likely a piece of aircraft."

The National Transportation Safety Board will reportedly analyze the object and check with area airlines to see if there are related reports with any planes.

FAA Examines Part That Fell Through Home
http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/FAA-Examines-Part--243207921.html

A mysterious object fell through a northern Virginia woman's home Friday morning and members of the Federal Aviation Administration were visiting her home on Saturday.

The FAA is trying to figure out if a piece of metal that crashed through an awning and landed in a dining room came from a plane.

"We have no idea if it's an aircraft part or where it came from and we have to investigate it," FAA investigator supervisor Barry Barbini said.

Homeowner Abby Baker said she found the piece of metal and the hole in her awning and her ceiling Friday morning when she returned from taking her child to school. Her house is in the flight path for aircraft from Dulles International Airport.

"At first, I thought maybe a gas pipe burst or something, and then i found this piece here that i thought maybe was a pipe from a gas pipe,” Baker said. “But when i had the gas company come out, they identified it as likely a piece of aircraft."

The piece of metal is about four inches long and weighs a couple of pounds.

Barbini said the FAA plans to have the National Transportation Safety Board analyze the object and send inspectors to Dulles on Monday.

"We need to do some ground work to see if any airlines have reported any incident with one of their aircraft," he said.

Baker said she's glad no one was hurt and hopes this never happens to her or anyone in the flight path area again.

"Had it been a little this way or a little that way it could have hit my dog. It could have hit the kids in the elementary school if they had been playing out over there,” she said. “And that's scary to me for sure."

Bottom part is threaded... top part mushroomed out.... appears to possibly be a bolt. A large bolt. Possibly a wheel lug bolt. I love how it's "plane part MAY HAVE crashed through roof" ... so not denying that it is a plane part, but questioning weather it actually crashed through the roof ~ that has a hole in it ~ & not questioning how else this plane part made it inside her house... hmmmm yeah.

It looks like there's either a lot of dirt or oxidation on the head of that bolt. I wonder what kind of appropriately maintained aircraft would have bolts on their planes in such condition. Could it have come from some kind of heavy construction equipment? Begs the question though. How did it get through her roof?

Lots of corrosion or whatever hardly looks like it came off an aircraft.

Looks more to me like a trailer hitch ball (rarely is ever used) on top and the nut on the bottom came loose and fell off. Now how the trajectory launched it out of the hitch upward onto a height that would have enough speed to puncture thru her roof and ceiling is a whole new story. Unless it was being transported by a heavy lift helicopter.

Something is wrong here. If this is actually a bolt from a plane, somebody sure screwed up an inspection. The corrosion is horrendous. Regardless of where it's from or what it actually is, the corrosion should have been caught long before it broke off whatever it was.

I saw on the news last night that it is a piece of a big ass tree mulching machine that was working near by. I forgot which station I was watching, but it is definitely not part of an aircraft.

It doesen't look like any sort of bolt that I have ever seen, she is holding it in her hand on the section that would have threaads but there are none so if that's the shoulder (that could be unthreaded)the bolt would be over a foot long with what looks like cement packed around the head (notice the flange around the base of where the cement?? is, whoever commented that it may be a trailer hitch ball probably got to that conclusion from that. but I have never in all my 64 yrs. on this big blue ball seen a hitch with a neck that long, & unless it fell from several thousand feet it would not gather enough momentum to penetrate roof shingles, the plywood roofing boards & it's insulating paper & then the interior celing doubtful that it came from any plane just taking off.

"The Gas Company identified it as a piece from an aircraft"

W....T....F?

Seriously? That's your CSI investigation? The F'ing "gas company said so"?

In other words, Big Fat Bubba from Washington Gas, after carefully extracting his bulbous index finger from behind his ear while thoughtfully chewing on the remains of his latest Dunkin donuts stop says "dunno. 'taint ours for sure. prolly came of'n airplane or sumpn".

Gawd, what idiots local news have become...

Twenty-five years ago, I came out of the Pentagon after the night shift and found an airplane part next to my car in the North Parking Lot. It was an oil filler cover door off of a 727 that hadn't been properly lock-latched, and had been ripped off by the slipstream of a take-off. I called the National Airport authorities, and they weren't even remotely interested. Others at the Pentagon have also found parts in the North Lot, which is on the approach. I guess that if 'most' of the plane lands intact and at an airport, they don't worry about the smaller pieces. Jus don't park or loiter under the approaches, eh?

Why would Abby Baker make up a story about something falling through her roof. If there is actually a hole in the roof she would have had to go up there and make the hole herself and then place an object in her house. Does she have that much spare time on her hands. The most logical explanation is something (who knows what and it may be aileron hinge pin off of either a 737 or 757) crashed through her roof.

that's not an aircraft grade bolt. too much corrosion. threads damaged

it should not have been on an aircraft that was maintained

but you know when i work on cars i sometimes leave a bolt on the battery and forget !

faa did not recognize what it was for (strange for something that size there are few that size on a plane i imagine)

----------------------------------
a FISHY thing is no doubt a fishing lawsuit for dammm-ages

where is the photo of home damage? picture of bold not hole in house ?

a hole due to a falling bolt say at 72+mph at impact would be very clear and easy to see inside and out , and as to whetehr a bolt did the damage

good luck mr insurance adjusters !

It looks to me like the clevis pin on a D-Ring shackle.

Like these:http://www.rustysoffroad.com/vehicle-recovery-equipment/tow-straps-shackles-fairleads-more/recovery-shackles-d-rings/warn-clevis-d-shackle.html

These things come in sizes ranging from tiny to HUGE.

Like somebody said, it doesn't look to be aircraft grade. Looks like the (cheapest) galvanized steel version.

It was flung onto and through her roof from a nearby construction site. The aviation folks figured out it wasn't theirs and then started looking around nearby and found the source.

Accidentally destructive? lol. Oporator/owner should have inspected the tub grinder teeth daily. That is the most worn out tooth I have ever seen in my life. No wonder why wood is flying out of the grinder onto the neighbors house. This is a picture of a tooth that is new (top row 4th to the right).
