Walt Disney in Manassas?

This dispute, however, has stirred an outcry similar to the one in 1994 over The Walt Disney Co.'s plans to build a $650 million theme park within miles of the Manassas Battlefield. The entertainment giant bowed to public pressure and abandoned the project.

wow, never knew about that...

Never heard about that. That would be awesome if they did build one. Property values would sky rocket. I just do not think NOVA has the lure of California or Florida, but it would definitlly get alot of crowds.

It was huge national news. It was going to be called "Disney's America." Nothing says, "The Happiest Place on Earth" like building next to a mass grave.

... and Dominion Valley is what was built in its place, an overpriced, gated development of McMansions.

Mis-information alert!

The sacred battlefield had next to NOTHING to do with Disney's abandonment of the project.

The reason the project was abandoned was the blue bloods out there used every connection they could pay to make Disney miserable.

Read Mr. Eisner's book "Work In Progress (it is available at the library) . He goes into great detail about it - including names, dates, and people.

the Walt Disney Company had been effectively portrayed
as an enemy of American history and a plunderer
of sacred ground. . . .

Michael Eisner in Work in Progress

As for booming housing values had it gone through, look at the Orlando or Anaheim area and you will see the lowest property values in their respective states.

Sorry, I am trolling again

Ok, I will change it to "Mis-guided information alert".

The area was chosen because it was near enough to a city that attracts tourists by itself; and proximity to an airport which could be expanded.

Disney devised a cloak and dagger routine by sending an ex-military man out to quietly buy up the land. He was able to by the land and when they had nearly enough land the announcement was made.

Then the crap hit the fan. Eisner wrote in his book Work in Progress, that he had no idea he would taking on America's the most powerful families - who opposed the project and valued their privacy and seclussion. These were the super rich old money.

Mis -information was spread (spun) and the battlefield became an issue. Was Disney 1 mile from the battlefield? 2 miles, 5 miles? Where do you draw the line? Disney offered earnestly to donate money to the park service or take over maintenance with a trust. Special considerations and exhibits to the battlefield in the educational theme park were offered. Disney was again unjustly portrayed as anti-American.

So the battlefield issue was the 1994 version of "he pals around with terrorists".

As I wrote before, Disney America is pretty much why Nissan Pavilion exits today. Cellar Door petitioned the PW Council for the permits/rights to build the place just after the Disney announcement. The PW County Council - under great pressure from the blue bloods to stop Disney, had to pick and choose their battles (no pun intended) and green light Nissan to spend time fighting Disney.

I believe the park was slated to be built in Haymarket. Instead we are getting strip malls and townhouses as far as the eye can see. Stupid people.

Right- Dominion Valley is Haymarket. I live there, and I remember this well although I was in high school at the time, but remember the locals protesting it as it would cause major traffic and tourism in a town that was considered "sleepy" (Haymarket). The next major opposition was the Dominion Power electric lines they proposed through the town. The long timers here complain about everything.

And to the person who said G-ville now resembles Ashburn....pretty much, although we paid a ton less for our homes ;-)

This project would have been better than what is there know and proposed for the future. 66 would of been widen at no cost to the citizens all the way out to Marshall. They were going to even fix the 29 interchange at 66 along with the railroad track issue that is currently ongoing. Sierra club brought in folks from all over the country to fight this thing. In fact there was a deal made on this. Before this big announce they had also announced that Jack Cook was going to build his stadium at Potomac yards. The deal was if you helped us beat the stadium we will help you fight Disney. I lived in Alex at the time and heard this for sure. What a loss for both areas.

In hindsight might have been better that Disney had built a theme park. They might have contributed funding for the battlefield park and the community.

Now you thousands of houses because of greedy developers and cooperative local governments

Virginia is for rich arrogant fuck ups.
Who needs a theme park when the state is one large one.
