BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL  --  2013-2014 SEASON

The high school boys basketball season is coming down to the last few games before the playoffs, and since there seems to be a lack of consistent threads for discussing it, I'll jump out in front and make one.  This will cover just the major local teams (Arlington, Fairfax, a little Loudoun) throughout the playoffs.  Please feel free to add your own comments.

I will post the schedules for each area team (just one post for each, I'll go back and edit the old posts whenever a game is played, that way the stats don't clog up the discussion thread underneath.)  Note the dates listed below for the playoff games upcoming:

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS: FEB 17-22
REGION TOURNAMENTS: FEB 24-31
STATE SEMIFINALS: MAR 7-8
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: MAR 13-15

So who's got it this year? Edison? Herndon? Robinson? Woodson? Someone else?

I'll toot my horn! Go Eagles! Seriously though, Edison is in contention nearly every year, and this year should be no different. But that's 5A. 6A is a whole different matter. I've watched Herndon play, and they scare me a little.

Marshall just took Edison to triple overtime and almost beat them if the refs didn't bail them out. Edison who?

First let's get real Marshall knows they almost got lucky and so do you. Edison didn't have a great night tonight. Falls Church beat Marshall and Edison beat them by more than 40 playing the 3rd string most of the fourth. Edison is definitely going to need to strap up the rest of the season. Everyone will be coming for them from here on out. All of the underdogs like Marshall would love to beat them and it would be the highlight for their season.

I for one really enjoyed the Robinson v. Herndon game last night and especially liked the effort shown by Joe Bynum. Robinson simply blew Herndon away, no question who deserves to win this conference now.

Had Lake Braddock been facing any other opponent on Friday, Bruins Coach Brian Metress probably would have been a bit more concerned about his team’s readiness after four days off from school and practice.

But the Bruins had been anticipating the contest for two weeks now, still burning from a Jan. 10 loss on an Annandale three-pointer at the buzzer that, by rule, should not have counted.

“As soon as Monday rolled around, we were hyped because the Annandale game was going down on Friday,” Bruins junior forward A.J. Alexander said. “We knew it would be an emotional game after losing on a skeptical call, so we had to take that energy and use it to our advantage.”

Even with emotions running high, it was perhaps the Bruins’ most calming force, sophomore James Butler, who sparked them with a career-high 17 points in a 81-57 rout of Annandale in Burke.

To most, Butler is better known as “Natalie’s little brother,” his sister being former two-time All-Met Bruin forward and current Georgetown freshman Natalie Butler. Friday, all eyes — including Natalie’s, from the home stands — were on Butler, who found positioning inside to score six first-quarter points and spark Lake Braddock (11-3, 5-1 in Va. Conference 7) to a lead that it would never relinquish.

“Of course, my sister was a great player here and I was able to help her develop just like she has helped me along the way,” said Butler, who at 6-foot-6 stands one inch taller than his sister. “I feel fortunate to be getting more playing time this year and have the opportunity to make somewhat of a name for myself.”

Butler heard his name called often in the second quarter, scoring the team’s first nine points that included a layup, three-pointer and two free throws. Alexander (19 points, 14 rebounds) and Will Gregorits (16 points) also found success in the post against the smaller Atoms by controlling the boards and setting up transition opportunities.

Ignited by a thunderous left-handed dunk from Alexander, the Bruins closed the first half on a 10-2 run that extended their lead to 20 points.

“Last time we played them, we had an 18-point lead in the third quarter and lost it, so we wanted to keep pushing the tempo and building on our lead tonight,” Gregorits said. “We didn’t want to let them come back or leave any doubt.”

Austin Hall helped Annandale (11-5, 3-3) briefly build momentum with a long three-pointer that cut the deficit to 13 midway through the third period. But following a timeout, the Bruins took the floor re-energized, sealing the victory with a 19-5 run.

With their lone Conference 7 loss now avenged, the Bruins shift their focus to Monday’s makeup game at home against W.T. Woodson with a chance to move into a tie for first place.

When Doug Craig returned to school Friday following a four-day break due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and weather closures, the W.T. Woodson boys’ basketball coach was welcomed with the news that the basketball court was submerged under water due to a burst pipe.

Craig won’t know the extent of the damage and repair time until workers arrive on Tuesday, temporarily displacing a 12-3 Woodson team with four home games remaining and potentially more should it earn one of the top seeds in the Conference 7 and 6A North region playoffs.

“It happened some time Thursday night or Friday morning and people described it to me as a waterfall falling on the floor,” said Craig, who is searching for other options at nearby schools and colleges. “Hopefully it’s not as bad as we’re anticipating, but it certainly will put us in flux for the next week or so.”

As much as I personally like the Edison program, I agree with you that Potomac will simply demolish Edison when they meet in the playoffs unless Edison can really tighten up their ship. In fact, I think Edison is in danger of a couple major upsets, and might not even challenge for their own conference tournament.

LANGLEY TOPS FAIRFAX DESPITE MORE ADVERSITY

It was nothing new for the Langley Saxons last night when the boys high school basketball team faced yet more adversity in a season that has been full of such obstacles.

This time, Langley was able to hold on and overcome its hard luck to defeat the host Fairfax Rebels, 44-40, behind the play of senior guard Garrett Collier.

Collier scored a game-high 23 points, including all 11 of Langley’s fourth-period points, to go with five steals, five rebounds, a block, and a key defensive deflection that led to a turnover in the final seconds.
“He did so much for us tonight,” said Langley coach Scott Newman, whose team improved to 7-10 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Collier, who will play at Division III Denison University in Granville, Ohio, was 8 of 8 from the foul line, and was 6 of 10 from the floor, including three three-pointers.

He made a reverse layup with 1:20 to play to give Langley the lead for good at 40-38. Collier then made two foul shots with 55 seconds left to up the lead to 42-38, followed by two addition freebees with 27 seconds to play to increase Langley’s advantage to 44-40. After that, Collier deflected a pass on the Rebels’ ensuing possession that led to a turnover, which iced the win.

In addition, Collier had to go solo at point guard for the rest of the game after starting senior point Ross Callaghan (10 points, two assists) left the contest for good with an injury with 2:15 to play in the third period. Langley’s latest bout of adversity occurred when Callaghan collided with a Fairfax player, then fell hard to the floor, hitting his head. He held an ice pack on the back of his neck until the game ended.
The loss snapped a five-game inning streak for Fairfax (9-8, 1-1).

“We have had so many ups and downs this season, but this team has fight in it,” Newman said.
The biggest downer was the loss for Collier for Langley’s first nine games. Collier was injured during Langley’s final football game of the fall campaign.

“We are 5-3 since Garrett has been back. I think we are on the verge,” Newman said. “Then we were able to get a couple of key baskets.”

Sophomore forward Nate Shafer had six points, five rebounds and two blocks for Langley and junior guard Mahir Ahmed had three points and an assist.

Jack Allsoop and Nathan Roberts each scored 12 points for Fairfax.

WAKEFIELD NETS 90 POINTS IN WIN OVER FALLS CHURCH

The Wakefield Warriors got 26 points from junior center Dominique Tham and 21 from guard Marqua Walton in a 90-67 home victory over the Falls Church Jaguars last night.

Walton made six three-pointers, including four in the opening quarter in the boys high school basketball game.

Also for Wakefield, Re’Quan Hopson and Deng Nhial scored nine each and Jalen Carver added eight.
Wakefield led from start to finish, leading 25-15 after the first period and 46-32 at halftime.

With the win, Wakefield improved to 12-4 overall.

The 90 points were a single-game, season high for Wakefield.

The Warriors host the Stuart Raiders tonight at 7:30 in their next game, then play at the Lee Lancers in Springfield on Jan. 31 at 7:45 p.m.

ROBINSON SPREADS IT AROUND IN 82-67 WIN OVER HERNDON

With its lead trimmed to six and the clock ticking down to the final minute of Tuesday’s game against No. 14 Herndon, Robinson Coach Brian Nelson called for his team to move the ball around and away from Hornets defenders.

Though Nelson typically employs this approach to ice a game during its final moments, the scheme isn’t much different than the Rams’ usual offense; they swing the ball with purpose until they find the open man. In this case, that player happened to be Joe Bynum, who gathered the possession’s fourth pass and drained an open three-pointer from the corner.

It doesn’t matter who scores,” Nelson said. “It only matters that we score.”

Nine Robinson players scored to help the No. 20 Rams knock off the Hornets, 82-67, in Fairfax. The outcome snapped Herndon’s 10-game winning streak and moved Robinson into a tie with the Hornets atop the conference standings.

Initially, the Rams (14-3, 5-1 in Conference 5) struggled to demonstrate their concerted effort on the defensive end as Herndon’s Kent Auslander stretched the floor with 16 first-half points on three three-pointers.

It appeared Auslander would continue his onslaught after driving for a score to start the third quarter. But the Rams increased their defensive pressure, holding the Hornets without a field goal for the next five minutes.

“They were hitting a lot of threes and big shots at first,” Rams guard Matt Fall said. “We pride ourselves on our defense, and we just worked hard to lock down their big players.”

Fall took advantage of Herndon’s drought, scoring nine of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter to give Robinson a two-point lead entering the fourth period.

With the momentum up for grabs, Robinson seized control at the quarter’s outset with consecutive threes by Bynum (14 points) and Jared Steen (14 points).

“Coach always tells us to extend the lead if we can, and that’s what we tried to do by moving the ball and knocking down shots,” Bynum said.

Though Herndon (14-2, 5-1) worked to establish an offensive rhythm behind its own wealth of scorers, the pace wasn’t enough to keep up with the Rams’ sound ball movement on the other end.

A number of passes off dribble drives led to open looks and free throw opportunities; the Rams drained 16 of 18 attempts at the line in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

“We take pride in finding the open man,” Fall said. “It doesn’t matter who scores the most, and it could be a different player every night. As a unit, we just try to score as much as we can.”

I watched the Lake Braddock-Herndon game, the Robinson-Herndon game and will be at the Lake Braddock-Robinson game on Saturday night. I also saw Lake Braddock defeat Woodson.

Without a doubt, 6A Northern Region will come down to either LB, Robinson or Herndon. While Woodson has Bowles, Lake Braddock pounded the ball in the paint and were too much. Herndon has the best athletes overall, and Robinson is well coached and disciplined and get the most out of their players.

So it will either be size (LB), athleticism (Herndon) or team play and intangibles (Robinson). I don't see any of the other teams ahead of these three.

Those are the best 3 for sure, but one of these teams will probably be upset, by a South County or a Fairfax.

Out of the three having seen them all play, Robinson is the deepest team, they play unselfish basketball and can all shoot and score. Herndon has the most top-tier talent and I do think when all is said and done they will represent D6 in states. Lake Braddock is bigger, but still run a very perimeter oriented offense as they should with their best two players having guard skills and probably playing on the perimeter at the next level. With out a doubt out of these 3 teams Lake Braddock is the best coached, and he will pull some drastic strategy come playoff time. I am talking like they score the first basket and they may go into a stall game. They lost to Herndon 99-86 last week, if these teams meet again it wouldn't suprise me to see a game in the 30's to 40's.

On the D5 side you have Edison, Potomac, and Wakefield as the favorites. All these schools can be upset by some of the Loudoun schools but I do think these 3 are the best. My pick is Wakefield in the end even though Edison won the regular season matchup.

Herndon played a sloppy game against Robinson in the second half offensively and defensively. Hats off to Robinson though as they tightened up their defense and hit their threes. Dorian Johnson had a quiet game and no one else really stepped up in that second half. This team is the most athletic so on paper I think they are the favorite in 6A. I don't think size will be an issue as Herndon has beat much larger teams in the past (Chantilly 2011) with smaller forwards.

Sure Fairfax started the season slowly and with all sorts of problems, but I think they have worked those out. They have played a great game recently, and should be a fun team down the stretch. I won't be the least bit surprised to see them upset a couple teams come tournament time.

Dorian Johnson, Herndon, Sr.

I wrote about Johnson last week as the smooth, efficient scorer who has made Herndon into a state title contender. Though the Hornets lost to Robinson on Tuesday, I still wonder why a versatile, coachable player like Johnson has yet to pick up a college offer.

Johnson had just scored 22 points to lead Herndon to a Jan. 14 win against Chantilly, but when the senior swingman walked into Hornets Coach Gary Hall’s office the next day, he wasn’t satisfied.
“He wasn’t happy with our performance, so he came and asked me what he could do to be a better leader,” Hall recalled. “That really struck me because a lot of times, when you talk about leadership, it means a kid is captain of the team and shakes the referees’ hand before a game. But even though he isn’t always the most vocal person, Dorian accepts that responsibility as a leader.”

Three nights later in a game against Westfield, Johnson endured constant double teams. Despite being held to a season-low seven points, he recorded 10 rebounds and nine assists.

The balanced performance continued a strong senior campaign for Johnson, perhaps the area’s most underrated star on one of the area’s hottest teams in No. 17 Herndon, winners of eight in a row.
The 6-foot-4 senior lefty has blossomed in his fourth year of varsity play and shouldered more of the load following the graduation of Northern Region Player of the Year Will Ferguson. Try to take away his effective stroke from the outside and Johnson can attack off the dribble with his speed and strength. Send multiple defenders his way and the swingman can make his impact felt on the boards or with his unselfish play.

“I think my versatility helps me out a lot,” Johnson said. “I can step out and hit the three, but at the same time, I like taking it to the basket and I can work on the inside. I try to let the game come to me but Coach tells me to also stay aggressive.”

So was the case in a Dec. 20 win against rival South Lakes. Strapped with foul trouble in the second half, Johnson patiently waited his turn before subtly exploding for 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.

And though he stands as the Hornets’ best scorer, Johnson learned from his time playing alongside Ferguson how to be efficient while allowing his other teammates to shine. Three other Hornets (Kent Auslander, Delontae Wingfield and DeAndre Thomas) average more than 10 points per game and in Saturday’s 99-86 win against a tough Lake Braddock team, Johnson’s 23 points were complemented by 23 from Thomas, 20 from Wingfield and 13 from Auslander.

“We’re really deep and everybody can score, so while I’ve worked to be more of a leader this year, it takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders knowing the guys I have around me,” Johnson said. “That win was big for us, but honestly, we could’ve played a lot better.”

Johnson’s constant hunger for success and excellence partly stems from his freshman year experience. As a member of the varsity, he actually played his first game against his current coach, who was still at the helm for Middleburg Academy at the time. Johnson scored seven points and checked Middleburg star Mo Alie, who now plays at VCU.

“Dorian was probably 6-2 and about 150 pounds and he battled and didn’t back down that night,” Hall said. “A lot of kids have skills but don’t have the real ingredients and intangibles to be very good players, but you could see that in Dorian in the way he competed.”

Johnson was the fourth-leading scorer that year at 6.6 points per game but he was forced to miss Herndon’s playoff run to the Concorde District title and Northern Region semifinals due to a knee injury.
“It was definitely hard watching us win and not being able to play,” Johnson said, “but it motivates me now to push us to go even farther this year.”

Since cutting their teeth against tough competition at the Gonzaga DC Classic to start the season, the Hornets have run through area play, defeating their last seven opponents by an average of 20.4 points. Coincidentally, that’s the same number of points Johnson is averaging this season after scoring 20-plus points in seven of Herndon’s last eight games.

What’s more, the Hornets stand to gain a boost in the very near future with the recent enrollment of Life Academy (N.J.) senior transfer and Lehigh commit Brandon Alston. Hall said the 6-5 swingman is not yet officially on the team and still has some paperwork pending along with a physical, but Alston ideally could begin practicing later this week.

As for Johnson, he doesn’t hold any college offers yet but is receiving strong interest from Division 2 and 3 schools like Shepherd, Barton, Chowan, Bridgewater and Shenandoah. And as Johnson’s play continues to elevate the Hornets into the upper echelon of the Virginia basketball scene this season, he’s likely to see a similar spike in his recruitment.

“He’s an unassuming player who flies under the radar but if you look at the numbers, he does everything,” Hall said. “He’ll likely finish in the top three in scoring in school history, maybe the top five in rebounding, he leads our team in charges, rebounds and assists. Dorian’s set himself up for success with his performance in the classroom and on the court, and the longer we play and more games we win, the more attention he’ll get.”

There is a full slate of games being played tonight, and a couple great conference matchups you should try to attend!

Annandale (11-7) plays at conference opponent South County (11-6) in Lorton at 7:30 p.m. A win by South County would certainly help advance their credibility as a legit contender.

Briar Woods (10-6) plays at conference opponent Freedom (1-15) in South Riding at 7:00 p.m. This game should be a no-brainer.

Centreville (1-17) plays at conference opponent Westfield (7-11) in Chantilly at 7:30 p.m. The stakes: Last place in Conference 5. Yippee!

Chantilly (9-8) plays at conference opponent Herndon (13-3) in Herndon at 7:30 p.m. A win here gets Herndon back onto a winning streak after a bump in the road with Robinson.

Fairfax (9-8) plays at conference opponent South Lakes (10-7) in Reston at 7:30 p.m. I personally find this the most intriguing matchup this evening.

Hayfield (11-6) plays at conference opponent Langley (7-9) in McLean at 7:30 p.m. A chance for Hayfield to show if they belong in a tournament discussion or not.

Thomas Jefferson (1-14) plays at conference opponent Falls Church (7-9) in Falls Church at 7:30 p.m. Falls Church needs to win big and fix their many problems.

Robert E. Lee (4-12) plays at conference opponent Wakefield (13-4) in Arlington at 7:45 p.m. My beloved Lee will go up in flames just as they do every year... sigh...

Potoman Falls (13-4) plays at conference opponent Broad Run (14-1) in Ashburn at 7:15 p.m. This is the biggest matchup taking place tonight, and really important for both teams.

James Robinson (14-3) plays at conference opponent Oakton (11-6) in Vienna at 7:45 p.m. Another fun matchup, but Robinson needs to handle this one smoothly.

Stone Bridge (9-8) plays at conference opponent Tuscarora (11-6) in Leesburg at 6:15 p.m. I don't know either of these teams from a hole in the wall.

J.E.B. Stuart (3-14) plays at conference opponent Thomas Edison (14-2) in Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Stuart should just forfeit now and spare themselves the humiliation.

Washington-Lee (6-10) plays at conference opponent McLean (5-12) in McLean at 6:00 p.m. Does anyone really care who wins this game? Neither team looks promising.

West Springfield (6-6) plays at conference opponent West Potomac (6-8) in Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans are on the outside looking in at their conference unless they start putting something together fast.

Yorktown (7-10) plays at conference opponent James Madison (5-12) in Vienna at 7:45 p.m. Not sure what to make of this one.

W-L RALLIES PAST MCLEAN, HAS A 2-0 WEEK
-----------------------------------------------------------

Midway through the second quarter, with the score tied, things weren’t looking good for the visiting Washington-Lee Generals against the McLean Highlanders.

Washington-Lee coach Bobby Dobson was assessed a technical foul, and moments later junior guard Alex Seff was whistled for another technical for unsportsmanlike conduct in the Generals’ eventual 74-59 win in the boys high school basketball game last night.

The Highlanders (5-13) capitalized on the sequence of events by going on a 14-4 run, and went into halftime confident that it had its first conference win in grasp.

Washington-Lee (7-11, 2-1) and its senior cornerman, Jonah Sens, had other plans. The Generals ratcheted up their press defense – which forced 19 turnovers and recorded 12 steals – and their offensive tempo in the second half. As a result, Sens scored a game-high 26 points to rally Washington-Lee to victory.

The win was the second of the week for W-L.

The visiting team’s win over McLean was highlighted by its strong third-quarter performance, where the Generals outscored the Highlanders 28-15. As Washington-Lee upped its defensive intensity and trapping, McLean struggled to keep its composure.

With the visitors leading, 50-49, late in the third quarter, McLean senior forward Alex Glisman – who led his team in scoring with 13 points – committed a flagrant technical foul after turning the ball over on offense. Glisman was ejected from the game.

“At halftime, I told our players that we just needed to play our game and play better defensively. We knew we could win,” Dobson said. “We had to pick up the pace and defensive intensity, and get some easy baskets.”

Dobson’s message got to the Generals, who sped the game’s tempo in the second half. After each team ran through only 28 possessions each in the first half, Washington-Lee’s pressure on both ends of the floor gave both teams 36 possessions in the second half.

The Generals scored with those extra possessions, while McLean committed turnovers.

“We needed to create offense from our defense, and we did that in the second half,” Sens said. “We were effective because we stepped up the pressure on defense and moved the ball well – limited our mistakes – on offense.”

In the victory, Sens was 12 for 15 shooting from the floor. When the Generals ran half-court sets, they often funneled the ball through their senior leader. Sens consistently hovered around the high-post, making high- and low-percentage shots alike, while being hounded by a double- and triple-teams.
“We [were effective on offense] because we got the ball to a guy who can shoot the ball, Jonah Sens,” Dobson said. “He’s a player who knows how to play at this level.”

Senior forward Aaron James added 13 points for Washington-Lee, while Seff recorded 11 points and seven assists.

Senior Mike Anthony scored 12 points for McLean, which suffered its fourth straight loss.

Earlier in the week, Washington-Lee defeated the visiting Madison Warhawks, 81-60, as five players scored in double figures.

Seff had a team-best 17 points, Halil Parks had 13, Sam Patecell and Sens 12 each and Nicholas Miller 11. Gene Jones scored seven. The Generals were 22 of 30 from the foul line.

McLean lost earlier games to South Lakes, 71-43, and Hayfield, 69-40.

MADISON ENDS STREAK, SKID CONTINUES FOR YORKTOWN
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Between the teams, the Madison Warhawks and Yorktown Patriots had combined to lose eight games in a row entering last night’s boys high school basketball contest.

A two-game losing skid ended for host Madison (6-12), which shot 49 percent from the floor to win, 63-46. Yorktown (7-11) continued its stretch of recent cold shooting, just 35 percent, to drops its seventh straight game.

Madison led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, then began pulling away in the second. Yorktown made just 1 of 11 shots from the floor in the second period and fell behind, 24-14, at halftime. Madison led, 44-24, after three periods.

“We just haven’t shot well,” said Yorktown coach Rich Avila, whose team missed 12 straight shots during one stretch.

The Patriots were led by senior Zack Esherick with 13 points and four rebounds. Senior point guard Jeremiah Leano had seven points and three steals and senior guard William Roebuck had four points and four rebounds. Junior forward Joe McBride had five points off the bench.

Starter Edmund Pendleton was hurt and did not play for Yorktown.

Yorktown was 0-3 over a five-game stretch, losing to South Lakes, 58-51, and Centreville, 50-42, in addition to Madison. The Patriots shot poorly in both of those other losses as well.

For Madison in the win over Yorktown, guard Sekai Walker had 19 points and three assists; guard Kyle Karp had 16 points (four three-pointers); point guard Daniel Ungerleider had 11 points and three assists; center Noah Dunlap had five points and seven rebounds; and forward Fitz Stein had two points, six rebounds and three assists.

Madison outrebounded Yorktown, 33-22.

The Warhawks lost to Washington-Lee, 81-60, in its previous game, which like the Yorktown contest was against an Arlington opponent.

POTOMAC FALLS PULLS AWAY FROM BROAD RUN
---------------------------------------------------------------

When the Potomac Falls and Broad Run boys basketball teams met at Potomac Falls on Jan. 11, the Panthers held a seven-point lead late in the game before the Spartans rallied for a one-point victory.

Potomac Falls head coach Jeff Hawes did not want to see that happen again Friday when the teams met in Ashburn, and he got his wish. The Panthers held off a few Broad Run rallies in the second half and pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Spartans their first Potomac District defeat, 65-52.

Junior A.J. Robinson and sophomore Danny Cox led Potomac Falls (14-4, 3-3 Potomac District) with 13 points each, while senior Matt Tierney and junior Wanya Allen each added 12 points. Allen led the Panthers with 13 rebounds – 11 in the second half – and junior Andrew Corum added nine points and 12 rebounds.

“For the team to win, they need me to battle on the boards,” Allen said. “So I’m bringing that to my game now and trying to get as many boards as I can.”

Senior Khiorie Stewart led Broad Run (14-2, 5-1) with 13 points each, while senior Matt Tierney and junior Wanya Allen each added 12 points.

Senior Khiorie Stewart led Broad Run (14-2, 5-1) with 13 points. Senior Travis Fulgham, who entered the game averaging more than 20 points per contest, was limited to just nine points and added seven rebounds. Senior Justin Hart also scored nine points, while senior Tyler Ellington had a team-high 10 rebounds as the Spartans had their 14-game win streak snapped.

“That’s the first time we’ve had it put to us,” Broad Run head coach John Costello said. “We didn’t convert shots, we didn’t make foul shots. They just flat out beat us.”

Following Tuesday’s 64-63 loss to Stone Bridge – the third one-point loss of the season for Potomac Falls – Hawes said the Panthers had a “toughness practice” Wednesday and it appeared to pay off.

“It’s not the ‘W’ so much that mattered tonight,” Hawes said. “Tuesday’s loss to Stone Bridge was perhaps the softest game physically we’ve played in 10 years. The kids said Wednesday’s practice was the hardest sports practice of their life. It wasn’t punishment, but we did one drill after another, toughness drills. We sat down and talked about it being all about the fight, all about being a man.”

Potomac Falls’ toughness showed early Friday, particularly on defense. Utilizing a triangle-and-two set, the Panthers were able to limit Fulgham to one shot in the first quarter as Potomac Falls took a 16-13 lead. The Panthers pushed the advantage to 22-13 early in the second before Fulgham got untracked a bit and scored six points – including all three of his field goals in the game – in a 9-0 Broad Run spurt that tied the game at 22-22 with 2 minutes, 36 seconds left in the first half.

But that was as close as the Spartans would get the rest of the night. Potomac Falls scored the last seven points of the half, including a three-pointer by senior Matt Malogne with 32 seconds left, to take a 29-22 lead into intermission.

“Matt Malogne has had a tough year for a senior, but he did some real important things for us tonight,” Hawes said. “He stuck a three there. That was a really important run after they tied it. To go 7-0 there to end the half was huge.”

Broad Run kept up the pressure early in the second half as Hart hit a three-pointer from the left wing to pull the Spartans within 33-30 with 5:03 left in the third quarter. But a 9-2 run – with Tierney scoring five points – gave Potomac Falls a 42-32 advantage and the Panthers never led by fewer than six points the rest of the game.

“They’re very talented and have great athletes,” Hawes said of the Spartans. “But every time they threw a big punch at us, we answered it. We knew it was coming. It seemed funny that we were up seven at half. I told the kids ‘let’s see who is ready to be a man, play some Panther basketball and get this done.’
“This was an overall gut-check,” Hawes added. “I was real proud of our kids. We had a plan and it ended up working. It’s just one game, but we really needed that tonight.”

While Costello was disappointed with the loss, he realizes the season is far from over.

“The triangle-and-two takes away your two best players and says the other three guys have to beat us,” Costello said of Potomac Falls’ strategy. “It just seemed like there was a cover on the basket. When you play up-tempo like we do, it’s so important to go down and convert. We didn’t do that tonight. Against a team with a really good game plan, it didn’t work tonight.

“The good thing is it’s our first bump in the road,” Costello added. “It’s nice to go out 5-0 in the district so when you have a game like that, you just have to bounce back. What we do next week and how we finish is going to be important for us. We just have to consider it a bad night and come back ready to play Tuesday against Tuscarora.”

POTOMAC FALLS GETS PHYSICAL IN WIN OVER BROAD RUN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Broad Run’s Khiorie Stewart sliced through two Potomac Falls defenders and into the lane, creating enough space for the senior to elevate for a layup midway through the third quarter of Friday’s game. But the opportunity was thwarted when the ball wedged itself between the rim and the backboard, resulting in a jump ball and ultimately, a Potomac Falls possession.

Stewart and the Spartans had their chances to claw back into the contest, but each time the Panthers — with one key assist from the basket — thwarted their efforts. With physical play and several key runs, Potomac Falls kept Broad Run’s high-octane offense stuck in neutral to claim a 65-52 win in Ashburn and snap the Spartans’ 13-game winning streak.

With the outcome of the teams’ last meeting — a Jan. 11 defeat at the buzzer — as well as its two other one-point losses still fresh in mind, Potomac Falls channeled its energy into an early 12-4 lead, stretching Broad Run’s zone defense with sound perimeter shooting.

“We had a lot to prove tonight after what happened in the first game and coming off another loss this week,” Panthers guard A.J. Robinson said. “We had a lot of motivation but we also made sure to play within ourselves and stay in control.”

The Spartans (14-2, 5-1 in Conference 14) roared back in the second period, however, with Travis Fulgham throwing down a dunk that sparked Broad Run to a 9-0 run and knotted the score at 22.

With Potomac Falls suddenly going cold from the outside, Wanya Allen afforded his team second and third opportunities with active play on the offensive glass. After the junior scored off one of his 13 rebounds, the Panthers ended the half on a 7-0 run that spilled into the third quarter.

“We knew we had to come to play strong, and I tried to make my mark by getting on the boards inside,” said Allen, who finished with 12 points.

Consecutive threes by Stewart and Justin Hart again cut into the Potomac Falls advantage, but the Panthers (14-4, 3-3) refused to be rattled. Matt Tierney, who missed the teams’ first contest with a concussion, made a big three from the corner and scored seven of his 12 points in the third quarter to push the Panthers’ lead back to 10.

Potomac Falls frustrated Stewart — who came into the game averaging 18.8 points — by shadowing him with two players in a zone defensive set. The senior swingman finished with 13 points.

“Coach [Jeff Hawes] always talks about how we’re at our best when our defense is strong,” Tierney said. “We played a lot more physical and forced them to stay on the perimeter with our pressure.”

As the tempo slowed in the second half, the Panthers maintained their advantage by getting to the foul line, hitting 15 of 22 free throws.

BRANDON KAMGA'S 17 POINTS HELP SOUTH LAKES ROUT FAIRFAX
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His team headed into intermission with a five-point lead over Fairfax, but South Lakes guard Brandon Kamga couldn’t help but be upset with himself after struggling to score four points in the first half.

The 6-foot-4 junior with athleticism to spare couldn’t finish the first-quarter alley-oop he has become known for in Northern Virginia, and some missed perimeter jumpers also hurt his confidence.

“I wasn’t being as aggressive as I could be, and I basically took the first half off,” Kamga said. “I felt like I just needed to pick it up and attack more.”

Kamga came out of the locker room with a steady determination to score inside, and didn’t take a single jump shot as he scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half of a 56-41 rout of Fairfax in Reston.

Every Kamga drive was met with three or four defenders, and the Rebels mixed in their box-and-one and 2-3 zone.

With a 45-29 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Kamga used a left-handed in-and-out dribble to freeze the defender at the top of the key. After taking two steps inside the foul line, he rose for the two-handed dunk that ended any hopes of a Rebels comeback.

“The double teams are starting to come, and but it’s nothing different for me.” Kamga said. “I just have to sometimes kick it out to my teammates instead of taking it all the way.”

The Seahawks’ leading scorer handed out two assists and pulled down five rebounds. South Lakes also received a big boost off the bench from junior guard Zach Pearl, who scored 10 points for his sixth double-digit outing this season.

“I was just trying to be aggressive and take the shots they want me to take,” Pearl said. “I’m pretty comfortable with [coming off the bench]. I have a solid role.”

With a stout man-to-man half-court pressure defense, South Lakes was able to keep the Rebels off balance and force 21 turnovers. Fairfax’s Alan Liu scored a team-high 11 points.

South Lakes (11-7, 3-0) remains tied with Langley for first in Conference 6 and extends its longest win streak of the season to five games. Fairfax (9-9, 2-2) falls into fourth place in the conference.

Lake Braddock won by 15 points tonight. If Lake Braddock hadn't of missed tons of free throws in the first half, margin would have been much wider. LB pounded the ball inside and it was too much for Robinson. Foul trouble for Robinson became a problem in the second half. AJ Alexander had a big game, and John Nice hit three 3s in 3rd quarter to push the margin.

How much should I read into this Bruins win over Robinson? Does yesterday's game give a big boost to my Bruins to win in the championship, because Robinson just beat Herndon.

Is it as easy as 123?

1 Lake Braddock
2 Robinson
3 Herndon

The op kindly asks that the discussion on this thread here is kept to the boys basketball teams only, not the girls teams to avoid confusion discussing two teams with the same school name. They are two seperate leagues.

If there is a supporting interest in the girls game, I can start a separate thread tomorrow with the caveat that I attend girls high school games very infrequently, and therefore would not be in a position to offer much insight or be able to validate the accuracy of the information I would post.

The "Washington Post" is itself often incorrect in posting in-conference records. If you look at my posted schedules for each team, the team names listed in all-caps are the conference opponents. Those records are accurate. If I have made a typo somewhere, by all means let me know.

Your standings are incorrect for some conferences. In conferences 6 and 13 only one meeting between each pair of teams counts towards the conference standings. For teams in these conferences that are also in the same district and therefore played twice, the first game counted towards the district standings and the second game counts towards the conference standings.

WEST SPRINGFIELD BOYS' BASKETBALL PICKS UP PLAY WITH FOCUS IN THE POST
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Nov. 8, Jason Eldredge coached the West Springfield football team in its season finale. Three days later, he was overseeing basketball tryouts while pondering how to revamp a team that went 4-19 the prior season.

Though the quick turnaround made for an exhausting stretch for Eldredge, who added head football coach to his duties this past season, the fourth-year basketball coach has been invigorated by the Spartans’ recent strong play on the hardwood. Winners of five of their last six games, the Spartans find themselves at 12-6 and a strong contender in the tough Conference 7.

“We’ve got a personality now,” Eldredge said. “When we started the year, we were hot with our outside shooting and that opened things up for our bigs inside. But then we hit a rut because we weren’t playing a lot of defense and we realized we can’t just outscore everybody.”

The low point came in a 41-point loss to No. 16 Herndon, leading the Spartans to tinker with their scheme so that it catered more to their strength in the post with junior John Cronin and senior Spencer Marin.

After leading the team in scoring last year, Cronin has continued to improve behind the ability to work around the rim, knock down mid-range jumpers and find open shooters like Christian Saulino when defenders collapse in the paint.

“I feel a lot more confident in my skills and having that trust in my game and in my teammates has really helped us improve our record this year,” said Cronin, who is averaging 17.6 points.

Alongside him is Marin, a 6-foot-8 center whose wingspan makes him a solid shot blocker and rebounder. After avenging an earlier loss to South County, Cronin and Marin demonstrated their complementary skills by scoring 23 and 20 points, respectively, in a win against conference foe Annandale on Tuesday.

“Not many teams have two big guys like me and Johnny, so that makes it hard for us to be stopped,” Marin said. “This year, we tired of being the same team that comes out, tries hard and has talent but still doesn’t get the win. We were ready to compete, and with nine seniors, we felt like we had something to prove.”

The final four games of the regular season will provide another means for the Spartans to prove their mettle. After facing Annandale and No. 19 Lake Braddock this week, the Spartans will host No. 11 Montrose Christian and W.T. Woodson before the playoffs.

“We’re playing well, but I don’t think we’ve seen this team play its best basketball yet,” Eldredge said. “I know that sounds cliché and weird because we’ve won four in a row, but we’ve got to keep improving on the little things, like minimizing turnoves. At this point of the year, you’ve got to bring your ‘A’ game every night.”

Hey Nat4Lee:

Is the regional bracket posted anywhere? That will be key. With the 1 and 2 seeds in Conf. 5 (Robinson, Herndon) and 1 and 2 seeds in Conf. 7 (LB and Woodson) being strongest, wondering how the round 2 pairings impact chances for these four teams when 1 seeds play 2 seeds.

In other words, do we know if these teams are in same bracket pairings or meet potentially in semis?

Thanks.

While teams still play the regular season in districts, district play is no longer the gateway to postseason and for most districts, there will no longer be district tournaments.

The first level of playoffs now is a new conference level. Each classification across the state was divided into half (called regions … which is confusing as they are not like the regions of old so please think of them as Sectionals) and in each of these regions, four conferences were formed of schools, ideally close to each other.

Each conference will hold a tournament or meet to send schools onto the next level of playoffs — the regional (or sectional) tournament or meet. As most conferences include schools from multiple districts, a thorny issue is how to seed teams for these conference tournaments. Each conference came up with their own formula for seeding.

The regional (sectional) tournament — featuring teams from the four conference within the region —  determines two teams to advance to the VHSL Final Four (VHSL state quarterfinals will no longer be held). In each classification the winner of each region will play the other region’s runner-up in the state semifinals and then the winners meet for the state championship.

It should be noted that because the 5A North region has a small conference (conference 16 with just four schools — Albemarle, Halifax, Orange County, Patrick Henry-Albemarle) it was decided that each conference would send a different representation to the regional tournament with the 8-team conference 13 getting four teams in and conference 14 and conference 15 would get three each and the small conference 16 gets two teams in to make up a 12-team regional.

NO CINDERELLA IS FORECAST IN LIBERTY BOYS HOOPS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rich Avila is right, so throw out all of the records.

The Yorktown High School boys basketball coach was dead-on a few days back when he said the eight teams that will play in the upcoming Liberty Conference 6 tournament are a “carbon copy” of one another.

What that means is any of the eight are capable of defeating or losing to all of the others. Results from regular-season action proves Avila correct.

That means anything is possible, potentially a wide-open affair when the tournament begins Feb. 18. The seeding will mean nothing.

In addition to Yorktown, the other tournament participants will be Fairfax, Hayfield, Langley, Madison, McLean, South Lakes and Washington-Lee. Of the eight, five had losing records when the week began.

“Any team can win it,” Avila said. “It’s that even. The team that gets hot and takes care of the ball, makes good decisions, makes their free throws and shoots well will win.”

The big question is, which team will get hot and do those things? Again, Avila is on to something, because each is capable of getting hot, or not.

Some regard Hayfield as one of the top teams and Madison one of the lower squads. Yet in a Jan. 24 game, Madison defeated Hayfield. Then four days later, an up-and-down young Washington-Lee squad knocked off Madison.

Langley coach Scott Newman agreed with Avila about the balance of the conference. Langley has been playing well of late, with league wins over McLean and Fairfax. But the close victories were by just three and four points, respectively.

“He’s right,” Newman said of Avila. “There are no nights off.”

Based on record, McLean might be considered another bottom-tier team. Yet, don’t forget McLean upset highly regarded Lake Braddock in non-conference holiday tournament play.

South Lakes is thought of as one of the better Liberty teams, but had trouble against struggling Yorktown.

With all that parity, one thing is certain – the tournament champion definitely won’t be a Cinderella story.

Here are several players who have remained a bit under the radar this season but still made their mark:

F Will Gregorits, Lake Braddock, Sr.

His length and versatility make him a threat inside and outside the paint, making for another tough matchup on a Lake Braddock team filled with size and quickness. After working to recover from a preseason toe injury, the senior has the Bruins on a roll as the Conference 7 race thickens.

G Jason Jolly, Stone Bridge, Jr.

At 5-5, Jolly’s size alone makes him easy to overlook. But opponents have learned to respect the diminutive force who can pile up points in bunches with his quickness and penetration ability. Though he’s currently sidelined by a hand injury, look for Jolly to make some noise after his expected return in the coming weeks.

G Khiorie Stewart, Broad Run, Sr.

While Paul Rowley has staked his claim as Loudoun County’s top player, Stewart has attempted to make a run at the throne. The senior is a big reason why the Spartans reeled off 13 straight wins. He can knock down the open three and slice into the lane with his dribbling skills. Though Potomac Falls frustrated him into an off night last Friday, Stewart is one to watch.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR TODAY

Lake Braddock vs. W.T. Woodson (at South County), 7:30 p.m.

A burst pipe has temporarily left Woodson without a home court, which is why Tuesday’s game against Conference 7 boys’ co-leader Lake Braddock will be played at South County. Lake Braddock won last week’s matchup in a low-scoring affair.

JOHN NICE LIFTS LAKE BRADDOCK OVER W.T. WOODSON
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

When John Nice gathered a pass on the left wing in the waning seconds of Tuesday’s game against W.T. Woodson, the Lake Braddock senior saw little, if anything, that made him feel good about the shot he was about to hoist.

Despite rolling off a pick, barely any space separated Nice from the Woodson defender shadowing him. And while the stepback dribble he took helped some, it left Nice slightly drifting backward as he floated up the three-point attempt. But even amid the imperfect circumstances, Nice exuded a confidence that made him the perfect player for the moment, the Bruins down two with less than 10 seconds left.

“I did hesitate a little because I didn’t have much room,” Nice said, “but after being cold in the first half, I had made a three on the shot before that, so I had my confidence back and it felt good when I shot it.”

Nice’s good feeling translated into euphoria for Lake Braddock, as he drained the three-pointer to lift the No. 19 Bruins to a 59-58 win over the Cavaliers. The victory gives Lake Braddock control of first place in the Virginia Conference 7 standings with three games remaining.

Tuesday’s game was held at South County as W.T. Woodson’s gym undergoes repair for a burst pipe, making it a road game for both teams, who appeared uncomfortable at the outset.

The Bruins’ zone defense kept the Cavaliers out of the paint and reliant on jump shots, while Lake Braddock (15-3, 8-1 in Conference 7) struggled to finish at the rim despite its size advantage.

That changed early in the second period, when Will Gregorits (19 points) threw down a dunk, sparking a run along with forward Reagan Jones to outscore Woodson 17-9 in the second quarter and move the Bruins ahead by six at halftime.

“Our rebounding and play inside was big with Will and Reagan,” said Nice, who finished with 12 points. “We started getting a lot more opportunities when they got going.”

Lake Braddock extended its lead to 10 points before the Cavaliers (12-6, 6-2) surged back behind guards Eric Bowles and Matt Ayoub. While Bowles (23 points) used his quickness to slice through Lake Braddock’s zone defense and score on tough layups, Ayoub got hot from the outside, draining five three-pointers to put Woodson up by two with less than six minutes to play.

With the Bruins jockeying to regain control, Nice drained his first three of the night followed by two free throws, pushing Lake Braddock back ahead and, more importantly, setting the stage for the game winner.

The teams traded baskets until Woodson missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity at the foul line. With two plays previously drawn up by Bruins Coach Brian Metress at their disposal, Nice’s number was called and the senior delivered with his third field goal in the final two minutes.

“I give our guys credit for executing the right play and to John for making a tough shot,” Metress said. “This is a big win against a great team and it gives us confidence where we can kind of control our own destiny during these next two weeks going into the playoffs.”

Thanks for posting bracket...you answered my question! Bottom line: the two strongest Div 5 teams: Herndon and Robinson, and the two strongest Div 7 teams: LB and Woodson would not square off until the semi final round of the regional tournament.

Actually there are 48 desperate conferences around the state, and each one of them has a different process for selecting and seeding teams... so you have to go look up what your specific conference has chosen to do.

PATRIOTS COME CLOSE, BUT LOSING STREAK CONTINUES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

They continue to come close, yet the Yorktown Patriots’ frustrating losing streak got longer last night, this time with an overtime home loss.

Yorktown (7-13) fell to the Edison Eagles, 64-61, in overtime for its ninth straight loss in boys high school basketball action. The overtime setback was Yorktown’s second during the slide.

Against Edison, the Patriots shot well early and led, 18-11, at the end of the first quarter and were ahead at halftime. In overtime Edison outscored Yorktown, 8-5.

Zack Esherick led Yorktown with 18 points, including four three-pointers. William Roebuck scored 16 and made three three-pointers to go with two steals, point guard Jeremiah Leano had 12 points and three assists and Jordon Gahima had nine points and 10 rebounds.

During the losing streak, Yorktown has lost games by three,  four, seven and eight points, in addition to the overtime losses.

The Patriots try to snap the streak when they play the host Washington-Lee Generals (7-13) on Friday night at 7:45 p.m.

Yorktown fell to McLean, 44-41, on Feb. 4 the night before facing Edison.

Meanwhile, the red-hot Wakefield Warriors (15-4) attempt to up their win streak to six Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Marshall Statesmen (8-11).

Wakefield routed the host Falls Church Jaguars, 79-55, on Feb. 4 and blew out host Lee, 99-48, Jan. 31.

During its winning streak, Wakefield’s average margin of victory has been by 28 points.

In the win over Falls Church, Wakefield’s Re’Quan Hopson had 22 points, Jalen Carver scored 20, Marqua Walton had 12 and made two three-pointers, and J.P. DeFranco scored 10 and made three three-pointers.

Against Lee, Dominique Tham led Wakefield with 20 points, Deng Nhial scored 18, Walton made four three-pointers to finish with 17, Hopson scored 11 and Jordan Allen nine (two three-pointers).

If you have already watched the Olympic opening ceremonies, there is a full slate of basketball to be played tonight around the area:

Broad Run (14-2) is at Briar Woods (11-6) in Ashburn at 7:00 p.m. Broad Run should take care of business.

Thomas A. Edison (17-2) is at Thomas Jefferson (2-16) in Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Does TJ get its first conference win?

Falls Church (8-11) is at Robert E. Lee (5-14) in Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Can't pick against my alma mater.

Freedom at Champe at 7:15. Why bother?

Herndon (15-3) is at Centreville (1-19) in Clifton at 7:30 p.m. A no-brainer.

James Madison (6-13) is at Langley (8-11) in McLean at 5:45 p.m. I think it's an even match, you decide.

George C. Marshall (6-11) is at Wakefield (15-4) in Arlington at 7:30 p.m. Should be easy for the home team.

McLean (6-13) is at Fairfax (9-10) in Fairfax at 7:30 p.m. Do we know if good Fairfax or bad Fairfax is going to show up?

Oakton (12-7) is at Chantilly (9-10) in Chantilly at 8:00 p.m. This should be a fun ball game.

T.C. Williams (2-15) is at South County (11-8) in Lorton at 7:30 p.m. SoCo needs a simple game to get back in stride.

West Potomac (6-9) is at W.T. Woodson (13-6) in Fairfax at 7:30 p.m. WestPo could make it close if they aren't tripping over each other.

West Springfield (10-7) is at Lake Braddock (15-3) in Burke at 7:30 p.m. The Bruins have shown they are completely capable, but this neighborhood rivalry usually gets interesting.

Westfield (8-12) is at James Robinson (16-4) in Fairfax at 7:30 p.m. Rams should be in control.

Yorktown (7-13) is at Washington-Lee (7-12) in Arlington at 7:30 p.m. These cross-town rivals don't care about standings, it's about pride.

YORKTOWN HALTS NINE GAME SKID BY DEFEATING W-L
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

During Yorktown’s nine-game losing streak, not much went right for the Patriots.

“We weren’t making shots, not making free throws, not doing enough of the things that add up to wins,” said Yorktown coach Rich Avila, whose team snapped that skid with a 57-49 overtime win against the host Washington-Lee Generals on Feb. 7 in boys high school basketball action. “Our team was shooting free throws at around a 50-percent clip. We had to improve.”

Fitting then that Yorktown secured its first victory in a month by doing all of the little things: starting with improved spacing on offense and finishing at the charity stripe. After battling to a draw in regulation, Yorktown (8-13) scored all nine of its points in overtime via free throws to squeak past rival Washington-Lee (7-14).

Yorktown’s victory was its first victory since a 60-52 win over the Generals on Jan. 10.

“With all the losing, we certainly weren’t as confident as a team as we should be. That’s what we gained tonight, confidence,” Yorktown senior guard Zack Esherick said. “The game’s a rivalry, so we’re obviously a little more hyped. But we made shots. That’s what changed. Our last game against Edison, we took them to overtime. We’ve known we can play, but needed to get that last bit of confidence and finish.”
Washington-Lee opened the game jumping to an early 7-2 on baskets by seniors Sam Patecell and Jonah Sens. That lead was the largest W-L had.

As Yorktown settled into the game, Esherick and Will Roebuck found their strokes from three-point range. The pair – recipients of a methodical offense that dished 11 assists – helped the Patriots take the lead midway through the second quarter, and enter halftime with a 25-23 lead.

“We started making those perimeter shots, which got us in the game,” Esherick said. “Then when [Washington-Lee] started closing me out, my teammates stepped up, made passes, and started to make their shots. Will [Roebuck] made a bunch of threes that kept us in the game.”

Washington-Lee, meanwhile, struggled to find its offensive rhythm after an upstart first quarter. Sens, the Generals’ first scoring option, struggled to adjust to the visitor’s defensive schemes and finished 2 of 9 from the field.

Yorktown sagged from the perimeter to cover Sens, either preventing the hosts from getting the ball into their best scorer or forcing Sens to take difficult, low-percentage shots. Patecell picked up most of the scoring load, but not enough to nudge Yorktown off its groove.

Yorktown extended its lead to as much as 46-41 midway through the fourth quarter before Washington-Lee battled back. Sophomore guard Gene Jones and freshman guard Halil Parks sparked one final push from the Generals on defense, notching a few steals and coast-to-coast layups when Yorktown failed to handle Washington-Lee’s 1-2-2 full-court press.

The teams traded points in the final few minutes of regulation, and ended the fourth quarter tied at 48.
Overtime was not as kind to Washington-Lee. Patecell fouled Esherick as he attempted a three-pointer early in the period and he made all three free throw. From there, Yorktown never looked back.

Esherick led all scorers with 21 points, and fell one rebound short of a double-double. He added four steals. Roebuck added 11 points for Yorktown, four assists and four rebounds. Also, Jeremiah Leano had 11 points and four assists and Edmund Pendleton scored nine.

Patecell led Washington-Lee with 14 points, while Sens managed added 10 and Jones nine.

Marshall is a big disappointment this year at 6-12 despite most of last year's squad back. Is this Dan Hale's last season?

WAKEFIELD STAYS HOT WITH SIXTH STRAIGHT VICTORY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In a late-season Capitol Conference 13 contest, the standings didn’t change as the host Wakefield Warriors remained tied for first place with a 5-0 record thanks to a 70-56 victory over the Marshall Statesmen Feb 7.

The upset-minded Statesmen (8-12) remained in the middle of the pack with a 2-3 conference mark.
Wakefield (16-4), which has won six straight games, never trailed in the high school game, leading 26-15 at the end of the first quarter and 41-22 at halftime.

“Our team defense was good tonight, and I think our defensive pressure got to them,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said. “We worked hard on defense and we talked on defense. We did a good job closing out what they wanted to do with the ball. We were able to do what Wakefield likes to do.”

Marshall coach Dan Hale was impressed with Wakefield and knew his young team faced a tall order against the Warriors.

“They are so solid. That’s a team you don’t want to fall behind and have to play catchup like we,” Hale said. “They are very good. But we battled and didn’t give up, and we had a few good moments.”

Marshall did not shoot well from the floor (32 percent) and the Warriors did shoot well (52 percent).
Wakefield was led by Re’Quan Hopson’s double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Also for Wakefield, guard Jalen Carver made a trio of three-pointers and had 19 points; guard Marqua Walton had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists; center Dominique Tham had seven points, five rebounds and three blocks before fouling out; and point guard Kyle Davis had eight points and four steals.

Off Wakefield’s bench, J.P. DeFranco had five points and Xavier Cooper had three points and four rebounds.

Hale believes Wakefield might be the best team in the conference come tournament time. Wakefield or the Edison Eagles (5-0) will be the top two seeds. That will be determined when the teams play at Wakefield on Feb. 11.

“Wakefield has everything,” Hale said. “They don’t rely on one thing or one person. That makes a team like that dangerous and able to advance in in the postseason.”

For Marshall against Wakefield, Hale’s son Towner Hale had 22 points, 10 rebounds and two steals and Christian Cameron had 10 points and five rebounds. Also, Riley Cummins had five points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench and substitute Jelani Murray had six points

Both teams have two regular-season games remaining before the conference tournament.

“We’ll probably be in the middle of the pack, but the third seed is still possible,” Hale said. “That’s what we’re playing for. We’re young, but we’re getting better.”

Marshall lost to Edison in triple overtime a couple of weeks ago.

NOTES: Since moving into its new school to start this school year, Wakefield is undefeated in regular-season play in its new gym . . . The game against Marshall was the annual boys alumni game at Wakefield. Players from as far back as the 1950s were on hand.

Coach Hale runs the best program at Marshall. He led the school to their first deistrict championship in school history last year. The team lost 3 of their top 4 scorers from last year, so ofcourse their record is going to suffer.

WAKEFIELD HOSTS EDISON IN SHOWDOWN FOR TOP SEED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

First place in the Capitol Conference 13 standings is on the line tonight when the Wakefield Warriors (16-4, 5-0) host the Edison Eagles (18-2, 5-0) in a boys high school basketball game at 7:30 p.m.

The winner will earn the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament not matter what the results of their final regular-season games on Feb. 14.

The top seed hosts conference games throughout the tournament.

Edison defeated Wakefield, 72-59, earlier in the regular season at Edison, but that game did not count in the conference standings.

Wakefield and Edison have each won six games in a row.

“They will have everyone healthy and ready to go, you know that,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said.
Edison players have missed the last couple of games with injuries.

JUNIOR CENTER POWERS HOST WAKEFIELD PAST EDISON
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

One quarter into last night’s matchup against the Edison Eagles, host Wakefield was struggling to find its footing against the visiting team’s dynamic backcourt.

The Warriors, who eventually won 75-68 in a boys high school basketball showdown for first place in the Capitol Conference 13, had an opportunity to avenge their loss earlier in the season against Edison.

That all changed in the second quarter for Wakefield (17-4, 6-0)  when junior forward Dominique Tham, who finished with 23 points, 18 rebounds, four blocks, and four assists, literally took charge of the game. After providing the bulk of the points to help rally his team, Tham threw down a monstrous dunk in transition late in the quarter that sparked a run to end the first half.

The Warriors punctuated that final run with a three-point shot from senior guard J.P. DeFranco at the buzzer to claim its first lead of the game, and never looked back en route to the victory.

The victory, Wakefield’s seventh in a row, clinched the conference regular season title for Wakefield and the top seed and home court advantage throughout the upcoming conference tournament. Edison (18-3, 5-1) will be the No. 2 seed.

“That was a real big momentum swing for us,” Tham said. “We did all the things to get back in the game, and that play was huge getting us the lead.”

Wakefield continued to play on its own terms in the second half as it extended its 33-32 halftime lead with a 25-19 third quarter. A stagnant Edison half-court offense struggled to figure out Wakefield’s defense in the second half, often settling for low-percentage shots or perimeter shots, while the Warriors scored with relative ease.

While Wakefield shot 48 percent from the floor, the Eagles shot 37 percent, and an even-worse 12 percent from three-point range. With Tham controlling the boards, Edison didn’t receive many second-chance opportunities.

“We played better defense this time,” Tham said. “We forced them out of the middle and onto the outside for shots they didn’t want to take. We wanted to close off the paint, because that’s where they are most comfortable.”

Edison also tried to push the tempo offensively. Most of its 36 points in the second half came in transition.

“We left [Dominique Tham on an island in the first quarter,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said. “He was going one-against-five out there, and we needed to respond by having everyone else move around, motion, effectively to get [Tham] the ball. We started doing that in the second quarter. We started to play our inside-out game, which is what we do. And executed on defense against one of the better backcourts in the region.”

In addition to Tham, Re’Quan Hopson had 19 points for Wakefield, Marqua Walton had points, including a trio of three-pointers, Jalen Carver scored eight and Kyle Davis six.

Bentley noted that Wakefield’s recent form has his team well-positioned for a potential postseason run like last season’s, when the Warriors played in the Northern Region championship game.

“We’re not looking past our next game against Mount Vernon. That’s the next peg we are looking at,” Bentley said. “But something to note is that our last five games before tonight, we’ve dominated our opponents. The margin-of-victory has been around 15-plus points, and that’s what you want to be doing at this time of year. That allowed us to be confident for this game, compared to how Edison was winning like we were, but all in close games.”

Edison senior guard Marcus Brumsey led all scorers with 24 points, while junior guard Tyvez Monroe added 15 points for the visitors.

The Wakefield vs. Mount Vernon game was originally scheduled for Thursday night has been moved up to be played tonight at Wakefield at 7:30 p.m.

A NEAR TRIPLE DOUBLE
-----------------------------------

What a performance, yet the game didn’t start so well for Dominique Tham.

The Wakefield High School junior center missed his first shot from the floor and his first two free throws en route to what wound up as a near triple-double effort in the Warriors’ 70-48 home victory over the Mount Vernon Majors in a boys high school basketball game last night.

Tham wound up scoring 31 points to go with 23 rebounds and eight blocked shots. The 31 points were a career high for the 6-foot-4 player, nicknamed “the human block party.”

Tham did all of that despite missing the final 5:29 minutes of the third quarter with a slight injury.
With its eighth win in a row, Wakefield improved to 18-4, finished 10-1 in National District regular-season action and 7-0 in Capitol Conference 13 play. The Warriors are the top seed in this coming week’s conference tournament.

“This was a game we wanted our guys to get out and get running a lot because we had been off for a few days because of the snow,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said. “But we never expected he [Tham] would do all of that.”

Tham already had a double-double at halftime with 16 points and was relentless on both ends of the boards with 13 rebounds.

For the game, Tham also had one steal, took one charge, had one assist, two three-point plays, was 13 of 18 shooting from the floor, 5 of 8 from the foul line, and had six offensive rebounds.

Senior forward Re’Quan Hopson also had a double-double for Wakefield with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and a block.

“Re’Quan had a good game and has been playing well for us lately,” Bentley said.

Also, junior guard Marqua Walton made four three-pointers and scored 12 points for Wakefield, senior guard J.P. DeFranco (two three-pointers) had eight points, senior guard Kyle Davis had six assists, and junior forward Xavier Cooper had four points and for rebounds off the bench.

Mount Vernon led early in the game, as the Warriors shot poorly to start, hitting just two of their first 12 shots. Wakefield then took control with a 12-0 run in the second period and led the rest of the way.

So simply put, this whole VHSL change is simply just a really large clusterf***. I just read an article that teams have no idea if they go to tournaments because of complicated formulas that coaches can't do math. And then every conference has their own rules which they don't tell anyone. Yep, real good job.

Is this the situation you are thinking about? I for one was completely shocked to see it happening like this.

When it comes to conference standings, teams are sometimes in the dark
Differing formulas will determine tourney seedings

Posted: Tuesday, February 11, 2014 12:08 am | Updated: 12:12 pm, Wed Feb 12, 2014.
BY ERIC KOLENICH
Richmond Times-Dispatch

In previous years, Henrico boys basketball coach Vance Harmon would post the Capital District standings on the dry erase board in the team room. Every day, his players knew exactly where they stood and how close they were to the competition.

But since the Virginia High School League’s realignment in August, area basketball teams are somewhat in the dark in regard to where they stand in their conferences.

When the regular season ends on Saturday, area basketball teams will prepare for their conference tournaments, not a district tournament as in years past. Conferences lines are drawn by enrollment. Districts were formed by geography.

And since some conference opponents never face each other in the regular season, a simple win-loss record can’t be used to determine conference seeding. Instead, a power rating is calculated, similar to the one used to seed football teams.

Because of the complexity of the power rating, Harmon no longer posts standings on the board. He and his staff calculate the rating for every team in the conference, but it’s far from official.

“It (used to be) easy to figure out where you were,” Harmon said. “Now you’ve got to be somewhat of a math scholar to figure it out.”

For Henrico and the rest of Conference 11, here’s the path to the playoffs: For each win against a VHSL opponent, a team earns seven points. If a team loses to an opponent from a higher classification, the loser is awarded bonus points. Add up all the points, divide by the number of games played, and that’s the team’s power rating.

When Harmon and his staff did the math over the weekend, they calculated that Henrico is tied with Highland Springs with a rating of 5.35. But not until the official ratings were circulated Monday morning did they know for sure.

In football, the VHSL calculates and announces the power rating of every team in the state at the beginning of each week. But in every other sport, that task is left to the athletic directors. In Conference 11, the task goes to Hermitage AD Chris Rollison.

After recording scores from the Internet and asking for team records from other ADs, he sat down with a pen, paper and calculator to figure out the conference standings. The first time he hammered out each team’s power rating, in mid-January, it took him 90 minutes.

Because figuring the power ratings of eight boys teams and eight girls teams is no easy task, Rollison can’t produce updated standings every day. At the same time, some coaches feel uneasy about not always knowing where they fit into their conference standing.

“Coaches should know this stuff,” Henrico assistant Chris Brown said.

Further complicating the issue is that other conferences in the area don’t use the same rules as Conference 11. The VHSL mandates that every conference conduct a postseason tournament and that every team in the conference participate. But how those teams are seeded is up to the individual conferences.

“There’s not a uniform policy throughout the state,” Rollison said.

So conferences have adopted different rules. Conference 12 uses the winning percentage in conference games to determine its seeds. Conference 20 uses the VHSL power rating, but includes out-of-state games in its calculation, unlike Conference 11.

Not every coach in the area will fret about power ratings and where each team fits into the standings, Brown said. Some will take a much simpler approach: wait until the season ends and go where you’re told to go.

It's great to know that bright elementary school students are lending a hand to help teach the Wakefield basketball players how to read. After seeing them give away a huge lead to Woodson in regionals last year in a matter of minutes, perhaps they'll also learn how to tell time soon, too.

I've traveled around the country a little I like to think. Forgive me for being a new transplant to Virginia, but It's my impression that this is the strangest and most erratic playoff system I've seen. You have all these teams all doing different things under different qualifications, a state title to these teams would be sort of like comparing apples and oranges.

From what I don't understand when I'm reading (which is a lot), each of the 48 conferences all around the state has voted on their own unique procedures to send their top teams to the regional playoffs after the conference playoffs. So, you have to somehow magically find each conference's rules... yea, sure... good luck with that...

In my opinion, a lot of the confusion could have been eliminated if the VHSL had given more basic parameters that all districts and regions would follow, however, the VHSL just assumed it would work as easily as football while ignoring the fact that the points system in football, while tweaked this year, had functioned for years and was administered at the state level.  Doing the same thing in other sports is a significantly greater undertaking due to the volume and irregularity of game dates.  The spring sports will be even more difficult due to an even greater number of sports.

So the fact is that the VHSL has to wait until the District tournaments all get finished before they rank the 16 teams in each Region. What is the turn around for them to get that done? The deadline for the Regionals to be over is March 4th.

BROAD RUN BOYS ARE WELL RESTED FOR CONFERENCE 14 TOURNAMENT

With last week’s snowstorm bumping last week’s games, Broad Run’s boys’ basketball team caught a break.

The Spartans were able to get their final regular-season game in last Wednesday — a 65-58 win over Freedom-South Riding — just before the storm hit. That gives them more than a full week of rest heading into the Conference 14 playoffs, which begin Thursday. Broad Run (17-3, 8-2) earned the top seed, and with it, a bye into the semifinals and a guaranteed spot in the 5A North region tournament.

“The guys did what they had to do to get it done,” Broad Run Coach John Costello said. “I’m proud of them because everyone was coming at us after starting 6-0 [in conference play]. Then we had a dart on our back. We were able to maintain and hold the lead. It was a big tribute for the guys. I think they’re ready for the next step.”

The two finalists from the Conference 14 tournament advance to the region, along with the winner of the consolation game.

The week off for Broad Run couldn’t come at a better time. A back injury has limited forward Travis Fulgham recently but he’s expected to be back at full strength after sitting out two of the past three games. Fulgham, a high-flier above the rim, is averaging 17.4 points per game for the Spartans.

“Defensively what he adds is a big thing, too,” Costello said. “He’s a defender that not many people can handle.”

While Broad Run’s position in the tournament is set, seeds two through four still have to work themselves out. Tuscarora (15-6, 6-3) will hoost Briar Woods (11-9, 3-6) on Tuesday and Stone Bridge (11-10, 6-3) will take on Potomac Falls Monday afternoon.

After watching Herndon play 5 times this season it appears they are the favorite going into the Regional Tournament. In the Conference 5 Title game coming up I feel Robinson will have to hit 15 three pointers just to make it interesting. Robinson is a solid team and well coached but can't handle the athletes that Herndon can put on the floor and they are 12 deep. Thomas should be the player of the year and with the new recruit Alston lighting it up, they will be a tough matchup for anyone in the 6A North.

Sure, Let's do two topics but the girls atheletics is as important as boys.

In fact, as we can see from the Winter Olympics that the girls in USA team have won a significant number of medals for the USA team than most other nations.

This says that girls atheletics is important for community health as eventually interest in atheletics for mothers of the future of a community leads to healhier children.

Makes sense ?

Great game last night at Fairfax HS to decide the conference 6 champ. Kamga drove the lane to score the winning basked with 3.9 secs left to give South Lakes the win over Hayfield 60-59.

Woodson and lake Braddock district final was a phenomenal game, Woodson lost by one as Bowles missed a buzzer beater. Don't count Woodson out of the region just yet.

Let it be known that old Chubbybeagle had the 6A North pretty much pegged spot on. I said best four in region were Herndon, Lake Braddock, Robinson and Woodson, and except for a completely cold 4th quarter last night by Robinson it would have fully panned out.

Nevertheless, Friday night will see two good regional semifinal games with Herndon and Lake Braddock the favorites.

Can't comment on 5A as I haven't seen many of the teams still playing.

WEll......we did have a rather extensive thread about Lake Braddock girls' basketball and frankly I'm disappointed it hasn't been resurrected.

Chubbybeagle,

Pretty much any knowledgeable high school basketball fan had those 4 you listed for 6A as they were by far and away the top 4 in the region. The only debate was would Battlefield slip in?

Westfield took Battlfield to OT in round one 76-70, great game!! Battlefield had some very solid Seniors lead by Blondin. Westfield started 5 Juniors all year and only had 1 senior on the roster and should be a team to watch in 2015. I still feel Herndon will win the Region and be a tough out in the State Tourney.

Well if Herndon wins the region they're in the state championship. It's just the North versus the South in both 5A and 6A.

Agreed Westfield is the team to beat next year, but there best player and first team all district player is a sophomore starting with 4 juniors.

So where have you been posting on this site 6A? At least offer some insight in January and February and don't be a "johnny come lately" saying you knew it the whole time.

BTW, BOTH teams that get into Saturday night's game play in state semifinals. Winning the region doesn't put you into state championship. Seed 1 from North plays Seed 2 from South and vice versa at a Superregional site as listed on the VHSL website.

There was nothing to talk about in January and February. Everyone knew Herndon, Robinson, Lake Braddock, and Woodson were the favorites; who else would you have in the convo that could compete with those 4?

At the time it was wide open amongst the 4, but with the Herndon transfer it's very doubtful Herndon will lose now.

Wrong chubbybeagle -

Wining the region DOES put you in Championship Game.

State Quarter Finals tonight. State Semi's tomorrow, followed next by State Final.

You tried. You were just wrong.

Not hardly...sorry you are a complete idiot. Whoever wins tonights LB-Woodson game will be the #1 seed and play Landstown the South's #2 seed. Whoever loses tonight will play Colonial Forge the #1 seed and winner of their regional tournament. Both of those games are next Friday.

The two winners then play for State Championship the following week. Know what you are talking about before you pop off jackass.
