Old Dominion Brewery

Me and some friends took a ride out to Ashburn today to check out the Old Dominion Brewery, they offer free tours on Saturdays @ 2 and 4. It's in a weird location, tucked away in a seemingly deserted office park right near Dulles, so I wasn't really sure what to expect until I walked in and saw a good-sized crowd hanging out in the brewpub.

Good stuff, I recommend checking this place out if you're a beer aficionado. Surprisingly good food at the brewpub, and they have a lot of beer on tap, the stuff you can't buy in stores.

The brewery tour is conducted by the owner, who kindly pours everyone a mug full of beer before he guides you thru the plant. It's surprising how small of an operation it is, but it's cool that you can walk right up to everything, and can ask questions to the guy who actually runs the place.

Check it out sometime if you like beer and are looking for something interesting to do in the area, it's very worthwhile.

On a disappointing note, the owner told us that he is selling the place. I sure hope the new owners retain the local charm and quality of their product.

The tour is free, and it includes a free beer before and after.

We were buying pitchers, which were 10-11 bucks, but I think the drafts are around 4.

No strippers, the beer is awesome and fresh. You can also buy it in local stores. I thing you can still buy steins full. They refill them with fresh beer for something like $18.

Twice a year they have a beer festival right behind the brewery in a field, it's always a great time.

The beer has a great fresh malt/hop taste.

Here's their website http://www.olddominion.com/

You can get growlers filled at the bar for take-out. It's 6 bucks, and they hold close to a six pack. The deposit for the growler is 15 bucks, but it's refunadable upon return, and the beer deal seems like it's well worth it if you live close by.

OD is a class operation and Jerry Bailey is a heck of an entrepreneur and brewer. Anyone who is familiar with OD knows they are the benchmark of good beer, great food and a nice environment. It's one of the few places anyone can go for an excellent meal, great beer and not come out smelling like a dirty ashtray or selling off children to pay the bill.

I'm sorry to hear it's for sale but I wish Jerry the best. He started this thing in 1989 as a home brewer with a dream. He leveraged his house and all the money he could get from friends and family. Despite his success, he still mans the carnival wagons and does the tours himself. I'm such a fan of this operation that three out of five beers in my restaurant are from OD and they make my house brand as well.

I used to live in Ahsburn right off the O&D trail and I would bike down to the pub with two growlers slung over my back. It was tough navigating the dirt path off the trail with two empty growlers. However, it was absolutely comical watching me try to get back on the trail with two full growlers after a couple draughts on an empty stomach. I never lost a growler though I did take a few spills on the way back. I would suffer personal injury before letting those growlers break on the ground.

My greatest regret is that they would not sell Millenium in growlers. If you have not had the Millenium, I strongly suggest you give it a try. It is not for the faint of heart and I would not recommend it as a chugging beer. The beer stands alone for it's richness, it's flavor, and incredible body. It takes the chill out of a winter night and lights a fire in your heart. On the other hand, it can leave you crashing through the screen door if you try chugging one of these after cutting the lawn on a hot summer day. Just trust me on that one -- don't try to replicate my experience. OD has also reduced the ABV on this beer over the past few years. If my memory is reliable (it's not), the original product used to hover in the high 11% range. I think the recent batch came in under 11%. Regardless, if you enjoy a strong Sherry, give this beer a try.

To all the crew at OD, an old friend who used to visit you misses you and the pub greatly. I enjoyed your hospitality, the atmosphere, the food and the beer. OK, so that's everything.

This is Fairfax underground, not Assburn underground.

If I want to go to a brewery, I'll go to one that isn't on a toll road, or on 7 beyond civilization.

+1000 mjs: That FuckYouPayMe really doesn't have a clue. The defunct Old Dominion brewery and brewpub were NOT on a toll road, nor "on 7 beyond civilization." And I think he was alluding to "Assburn" being in Loudoun County, and thus its news not being of interest to Fairfax County residents. This is a complete crock of shit since in its day many people from Fairfax County (myself included) were regular customers of the brewpub.
