I got my "ticket" 3 1/2 years ago. All I have is a Yazu 7100 portable. The best place is HRO (Ham Radio Outlet) in Woodbridge, Builers Square 7 near Opitz Blvd. hamradio.com. They will lead you in the right direction.

The big brand transceivers are all good (ICOM. Kenwwod, Yaesu) for 10M and up. Concentrate on getting a good antenna - check out the Grove antenna website.

The Alexandria Radio Club periodically has classes. Check out their web site at w4hfh.org. Alternatively, you could buy either the ARRL license study book or the Gordon West one, and take the test for free the 2nd Saturday of each month given at the 1st Christian Church, 2723 King Street, Alexandria by the Mount Vernon Radio Club (www.mvarc.com).

Excellent advice. The handheld radios and rubber duck antennas don't work that well if you are relatively far away from a repeater.

Ham Radio Clubs exists throughout USA and most other nations in the world today. In times of emergency, such as hurricane, tornado, or earthquake. Volunteer ham radio operators provide emergency communications service to the local emergency response teams, and often help relay emergency messages to others in the state, national and even international response teams.

If you live in the United States, chances are good that there is a Ham Radio club near you (search AARL, American Amateur Radio League, to find the nearest AARL chapters) , where ham enthusiasts meet typically on the monthly basis, hold an annual Ham Radio Fest or swap meets, and go the give a demonstration of the fun and learning opportunities to technical things and community service opportunities with ham radio hobby.

The new commander of the space station is a big ham guy. You can call him up as they pass over and say hi. He'll answer if he's floating close to the radio.

Ham Radio People and Geeks__An Important Connection

Best place to get info on getting a Ham Radio group near a particular neighborhood in Fairfax VA is via ARRL.ORG

http://www.arrl.org/

I like to see some way to get more "Ham Fests" and AARL Groups in Fairfax be part of "Celebrate Fairfax" County Fair each year.

Yea, kids like the ferris wheels, mary go round, pop corn and candy apple, sure.
But they can also learn about Ham Radio and Geeks skills and talents lead them to the high paying knowledge careers of the future .

Better than working at $10.30/Hr as Retail Clark chekout person all your life !

So, parents, and teachers, please consider this alternative of getting kids enthusiasting about Ham Radio and "Geek Stuff" now , when still at schools !

The name of the national association is the American Radio Relay Leeague, ARRL, not AARL.

Web site is www.arrl.org

In Fairfax County, the Vienna Wireless Society is particularly active and welcoming to newcomers and people who want to be newcomers:

www.viennawireless.net

I hope this is helpful.
