Why would Fairfax open schools for 5 hours on a Friday?
Stupid! The costs to open all the schools for a 5 hour day is amazing.
Plus the high paid administrators never thought about what happens to the buses.
So stupid is as stupid does..

So tired of people bitching about FCPS, Do you have anything constructive to say, or, are you just here to complain about one of the best school districts in the country? Typical "glass is always half empty" mentality.

Back during the 95/96 school year, they ended up using so many snow days that they extended the school day by half an hour. I think that was the year we had two big snow storms and back-to-back ice storms that shut down school for like two weeks.

That was an awesome year.

I remember that happened in 2003 as well. I wonder how much more snow we will need for that to happen this year.

Fairfax best school system. YES, but it's because of the TEACHERS! Not the Stupid administrators who open the schools for 5 hours on a Friday. Think about the COSTS and then what happened to all the buses.

So enlighten us, o guardian of the gunpowder, what extraordinary costs were incurred by opening two hours late on a Friday?

My kid, for one, took a midterm today. His teacher emailed her students to ensure them that it would be given as planned.

I'm no fan of FCPS, but if a few less people bitched and moaned and threatened a lawsuit over every single decision made by the school administration, perhaps they wouldn't react with such an absurd degree of caution over every single, stinking thing.

I think I remember that. Was like an inch of solid ice on our street and all the powerlines were down.

FCPS is NOT, I repeat, NOT one of the "best" in the nation...it is an illusion. Don't fool yourself

No doubt, its good but far from great. I think Loudon Co Schools have probably eclipsed them, due to the "brain drain" leaving FCPS and going there.

Well James, your kids teacher did not follow the county policy issued due to the snow days. I would have a problem with that. The following is from an email FCPS sent out to all parents....

A message from FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Due to the number of weather-related school closings already this year, several changes will be made to the exam schedule. The last day of the second quarter (first semester) is Wednesday, January 29, with Thursday, January 30, scheduled as a teacher workday, and Friday, January 31, scheduled for a countywide professional development day. Both days are student holidays.

· With schools opening two hours late on Friday, January 24, the quarter will end as scheduled on January 29.
· No exams are to be administered on Friday, January 24, or Monday, January 27, allowing teachers and students time to prepare.
· Exams may begin to be administered on Tuesday, January 28, and Wednesday, January 29.
· Teachers will be given extended time, if needed, to complete and submit students’ grades.
· Teacher workdays will remain as January 30 and 31.
Each school develops a timeline for grading and reporting to parents based on the FCPS calendar. The local school grading deadline ensures schools can report information in a timely manner to families and provide teachers with adequate time to arrive at a grade. The official calendar is published more than a year in advance with contingencies built in for snow days. Schools may adjust internal schedules and grading timelines and provide flexibility for teachers with non-teaching responsibilities to allow adequate time to complete and submit grades.

Seems as if "James" is pleased with how his child's teacher handled this situation. You may have a problem with that, but why, this is not your child's teacher. Just keep complaining for the sake of complaining. So productive, keep up the good work.

So you think a teacher should be able to do as they please regardless of policy put out by the School Administration? That works well until something goes wrong, then it is "blame the rogue teacher"! And since I was not directly addressing you...Fuck Off.
