Bring a debit card or cash, and your own bags.

If you live near an International Mart of any kind, they have fantastically low prices on produce. It's a bit harder to find a lot of brand staples and boxed foods like you'd find at a Giant or Harris Teeter, however if you can deal with large crowds and shopping at two places, definitely hit up your local International grocery. Produce is cheaper by 3-1, at least. It's insane. Aldi is also good, however they're a lot smaller and more hit or miss for what's in stock.

Check the weekly circulars for sales. I personally found Aldi to be scary. Where do they get this stuff? I prefer to stick with sales and store brands at places I know and trust will give me my money back if there are problems, which there hardly ever are. I really did not find the prices to be that different.

Walmart produce is not bad. It's not really cheap like the other stuff in the store. I've happened to be in there when the clerks were stocking the vegetables on the shelves. I got one direct from the cart and they're just about as good as most supermarkets. Wegmans might be the exception since they may be moving new merchandise in frequently due to the high turnover.

If you're OK with not buying brand names, Trader Joes isn't bad cost wise.

No, it's not. It's owned by the brother of the Trader Joe's guy. Different company, though.
