I noticed that last week when I went there looking for a part for a grill that I bought there about six years ago. The sales staff was helpful and the grill has been mostly trouble-free with some minor maintenance along the way. Most of the grills at big box stores are crap, but this one was well-built and seemed to be designed with replacement parts in mind instead of scrapping the entire unit when something failed.

While things are slow here, Fairfax County, Arlington and Alexandria are going to be fairly insulated compared to the rest of the country because of the Federal government. PWC and Loudoun, however, are different stories.

The problem with these smaller toy stores is they use a lot of shelf space stocking toys nobody wants. They have this idea that there is a huge market out there for educational toys, etc. Unfortunately kids today want Barbies, Bratz, Hot Wheel and video games. Stocking anything else is pretty much a waste of space.

Last nite I noticed that the Box Office Video in McLean had the windows all covered up and is closed for business. I'm surprised a place like that stayed in business as long as it did. Who goes to the video store anymore? Plus there's a Blockbuster right down the street. I would guess alot of these video store dinosaurs will bite the dust over the next year.

Yeah, I think that place road the "rotisserie chicken" wave that came with Boston Market and Kenny Rogers' Roasters. It is an okay place, but I always thought the chicken was over-cooked at it was very expensive for what you got.

On a more positive note...
One of the useless furniture stores closed in the new wing in Tysons Mall.. don't remember the name, but only 14 more to go before useful stores can start to populate that area. Earlier in the week they were having a "60% off sale". Walked past it yesterday and everything was gone.

Austin Grill near the intersection of 28 & 29 has apparently gone down. From my few dining experiences there it deserved to, unfortunately. I used to like Austin Grill but at some point they changed the menu and all the food seems to be pre-prepared and unexceptional. A sign has gone up announcing the grand opening of the sports bar taking it's place--Velocity 5 or something like that. Doesn't look like my kind of place.

There is actually some good things coming from the retail death watch. A lot of places at the intersection of 29/50 tanked and have been leveled. They are now throwing a ton of stuff in there now. Recently, across the street (I think it was the old Dunkin Donuts?) was leveled. Not sure what is going there now.
So far it's a new Verizon store, Zips (which sucks, by the way... don't take your stuff there), and an AutoZone. Not top notch, but better than another bank.

The shopping center in Chantilly that formerly housed the Shoppers Food Warehouse seems to be dying quickly. I see Jerry's Sub has moved too smaller location in same shopping center. Problem is that storefront is cursed. Everything that has located in that storefront has died a quick death. Hell I remember when the old Book N Card store in Merrifield relocated out there. The furniture store in that shopping center is closing and a number of other empty storefronts.
Wonder what could be done with that site? Rezone and put in high rise? What I don't understand about that area of chantilly is the huge increase in population and what seems too me a lot less retail stores. Where do folks go to buy food in that area if you don't frequent the international grocery? The Bloom way down the street? Did notice the WalMart has a hiring center opened up.

That is a lot of stores to shut. I was wondering if they were going to close the one near Duck, NC. Seems not. That is the only real grocery store on that portion of the outer banks.
