Why is there a lady collecting cans from the trash
Posted by: finding out why ()
Date: April 03, 2012 01:18PM

I see this lady every time it's trash day going around collecting cans? Is there a place in Northern VA where you can get money from aluminum? I know she is not driving up to Delaware or New York for the deposit. Any information.

That's actually theft...if they were laying on the side of the road it would be okay but taking them out of someone's recycle box is not okay (if someone actually gave a fuck) - just saying, I think it's funny!

No, it's not, once the recycle bin is put out for collection. There's case law on this. You go screw now.

Wrong - its perfectly legal, as long as your trash is located on public property (curb, roadside, etc.) In 1988, the US Supreme Court ruled trash-picking is legal, please refer to that ase for more information.

Not a lawyer, but generally speaking, from what I have read all items put to the curb are essentially discarded property, and up for grabs legally. Now you may look like a douche going through a huge trash pile, and I always try to not make more mess while I dig, leaving a good pile as it was, minus what I may find. I make a couple of grand a year looking through discarded property.

Now,what you propably can't do, is pick up stuff marked for a charity, and many people will leave their charitable donations a few feet within their yard or near there house to discourage snipers. But whether one can empty recycle bins or cull the aluminum is unknown to me,as the aluminum is left in a designated container, and presumbably the recycling firm has an economic interest in collecting the aluminum and other recyclables. But, if someone is reduced to collecting aluminum via that method, you should probably take pity on them.

I was recently shopping at the Clock Tower thrift shop in Falls Church. As I drove away I passed a gentleman who's heritage seemed to be from a country south of the U.S. border. He had an old japanese pick up truck and the thing was packed with all kinds of metal junk. he was picking through discarded metal items left by the dumpster out back of the thrift store. I guess that can be a good way to scrape together a bit of moolah.

a few days later I was driving about when I noticed a different old japanese pick up trukc(wonder if thats a requirement) packed with metal junk.

me and my Dad Fred need to look into that. Operating under the radar screen. I assume they ain't paying taxes?

Wrong; you entirely misunderstand that case.

I wonder where you went to school.

@Supreme - WTF aint that far off base. Yeah, he/she's not really applying the facts of the case 100% to what actually went down in the case................but the application of law still stands the way he/she said it does. If the garbage is in an unlocked container on PUBLIC land, then it's fair game. This means curbside. There maybe some sorta local ordinance about it, but if so I dont think it would stand up in court if actually enforced. You could get charged with littering if you make a mess doing it, I guess LoLz....but I DO KNOW you can sue and win for damages you can prove you received from someone stealing yr trash..........but that's a whole different ball of wax, I reckon

@Llamont - i dunno didja ask to see their permit? LoLz
@Skav - most normal decent ppl would................which means around here, that's rare :(

@Justsayin - California v. Greenwood, 486 U.S. 35 (1988)

This is a peculiar case because unlike trash which your removal company must pay to discard; recycling pick-up companies profit from the contents of the bin. So the lady is taking money out of their pockets. I guess it would be like taking clothes that were left out for purple hearts or salvation army.

We had townies that did this when I was at Radford. Our block would look like a beer truck exploded come Saturday night. Thousands of cans littered the streets but they were always all gone come Sunday morning. It was a symbiotic relationship.

"recycling pick-up companies profit from the contents of the bin"

I thought little money if any in the recycling business these days. Most trash companies wouldn't bother if they weren't required too.

It depends on whats being recycled. They can make money off of scrap metals along with the fees they charge for it.

But I think its dead on that if you see someone whose homeless collecting cans for money theyre clearly on hard times and sympathy works best in that situation as opposed to calling the police.

The recycling part does affect the reading of that supreme court case as that case was about trash and evidence and not something the company has a vested interest in protecting and its most likely illegal to take the cans, but again sympathy on the less fortunate should be taken into consideration

There's no money in curbside recycling. The dirty little secret is that it costs more to collect and process those cute little blue bins folks put out in front of their houses than the shit in them is worth.

Sold to a recycler, aluminum cans are worth about 50 cents a pound, but it takes 31 cans to make a pound, so even if you've got mom, dad, junior, and sis guzzling a six-pack a day of canned soda each, they're still only generating about $2.70 worth of aluminum cans per week.

The money is in depot recycling, where people bring the shit to you and you aggregate tons and tons of crap which you can sell. This is because you've shifted the cost of collecting and transporting the shit off your books and onto some sucker who's willing to waste a half hour of his time and a buck-fifty in gas to schlep his SUV full of bins/boxes/bags of recyclables to your location.

Recycling companies are paid by the municipalities. It actually improves their bottom line if someone takes out the cans.

@No money - hey thanks for that info - that, for me, totally explains at hell of a lot! Lotsa recycling companies out in Washington State and you just completely schooled me on why they do business the way they do (kinda shifty, but not completely shifty, y'know what I mean?)

Actually, once you put your trash by the road, it's no longer your property. Police have been known to legally confiscate garbage bags to search for evidence in a case, and it doesn't require a warrant because there is no assumption of privacy or ownership once you put it outside of your home. Just sayin'. You don't have to believe me....ask a detective.

fx co gov has been stealing metal from trash and selling it a long time

it's illegal though. in michigan for exmaple they have a deposit on cans simply to show that they have value

because one "throws away metal" doesn't mean they expect the gov waste facility is padding their pockets or giving it away to facist countries

far from it the law would say: goods collected and that are deposited at a public facility are NOT EARNED but collected by government, thus should be used responsibly as tax money - and documented as tax money on the record

a lady cannot be imprisoned or threated with a weapon for a can

HOWEVER the gov workers and the metal value - if the "lost un-accounted for metal" (not kept by poorly paid collectors as prizes as was in the old days)

if that ammount exceeds $2000 then that's a fellony committed by gov workers

----------------------------
so you keep complaining about the aluminum can lady

i see some snot nosed foreigner jailing a lady for taking an aluminum can while gov facility is horking money with Alco and hiding the money

there will be trouble
