A 17-year-old boy died at the hospital following a crash that occurred on Sunday, December 28 around 3 a.m.
Police identified the deceased as Steve Carbajal Fuentes of Springfield. He was a passenger in a 2006 Acura. The driver of the car, also 17, was driving southbound on Beulah Street prior to Steinway Avenue when they reportedly came upon a deer in the roadway and swerved to avoid it. The vehicle slid, left the roadway and struck a telephone pole. Both the driver and passenger were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The driver was treated and released.
Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are continuing to investigate the crash; no charges have been placed yet.
Deer safety tips and warnings are posted on the Police Department website at: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/traffic/img/deer_safety1.pdf.
