ISO Camry timing belt repair
Posted by: Ms Camry ()

Need to get the timing belt replaced in Camry and the local stealer, I mean dealer, wants $1600. Includes the water pump

Looking for a good local mechanic to do the work for (hopefully) a little less.

Referrals?

You never want to get work done at the Stealership beyond the warranty, you will never be able to afford it.

If you call around any shop that specializes in these cars can tell you without a lot of thought what their prices are. Some shops do so many of these jobs, they actually discount or have a lower price than a lot of the shops that do not do these jobs often.

I recall on a VW someone had, they need a timing belt and water pump, prices all over the place as high as about $1200, then they actually found a shop in PA that would do the job for like $550. They actually drove up to the place in PA, it was only about 90 minutes away, dropped the car, had lunch, did some shopping and then drop home that afternoon.

I'd call Backlick Road service Station in Annandale. These are good, honest, and reasonably priced guys.

I'll tell you how honest. I thought I should have my timing belt replaced due to high miles. I went into BRSS and Mr Kim asked me what kind of car I have. I told him and he said, "you don't have a timing belt....that car uses a timing chain which basically lasts the life of the engine". A crook would have said, "OK we'll call you when it's ready".

The downside is that this shop is incredibly busy (because they do great work and don't fuck people), so you might have to wait a bit for an appointment.

The guys at Gills will not rip you off and they have a couple really good tech's. Get a quote from them, you will be glad you did. They have a couple loaner cars that you can use if you set up the work in advance. I found them because of the high ratings in checkbook magazine.

I assume it's long out of warranty? I had a 2000 Camry, past regular warranty, needed water pump. Turned out there was a longer warranty (forget how long) on the water pump. While they had it apart, replaced the timing belt/chain (again, I forget which) for the cost of the part. An independent shop had dxed the water pump, and THEY suggested I check on warranty before spending the $$$ with them. Needless to say, they won my business (until they had a management turnover and went to hell, but that's life).

Bring it to me. I'm not the cheapest...just the best. Please bear in mind though that you are only allowed to ask a question ONE TIME. If you ask me the same question, even if you alter it slightly...I will get very angry with you.

Hey Pat! Is it true that your wife owns BG products? It was pretty sleazy of you to tell us to use BG-44K all those years only to find out that it was the exact same stuff as the Walmart house brand fuel injector cleaner.
I guess we should have realized that BG stands for Bonnie Goss. Do you still give Bonnie any of your BJ products?

^ False.

As much as I hate Goss, it's still false.

History

After World War II, seven veterans – Roy Leslie, John Thompson, Sam Parks, Don Walton, O.J. Connell, Q.T. Williams and Don Broadbent – emerged from the difficult days of war with courage, ingenuity and a vision for a great company.

The seven entrepreneurs had years of experience in the automotive industry before coming together in 1971 to form BG Products, Inc. They wanted to base their new company on the contributions of people working together in a common cause of selling superior quality automotive products.

Late in 1971, BG’s first two products went to market: Engine Tune-Up and RF-7. In the first full year of business, BG sold products worth just over a half-million dollars. In 1973, BG grew 17 percent. The year after that, 20 percent. Year over year since 1971, BG has shown an impressive growth pattern.

By the 1980s, the supplier of all BG chemistry had been sold to a new company, Witco, which quickly decided to close the Wichita plant. BG purchased the Wichita facility and began manufacturing its own products. With a Research and Development laboratory and proprietary manufacturing processes, BG began to develop new products and to fully capitalize on its existing products.

As the maintenance requirements of ever more sophisticated engines have grown from model year to model year, BG has kept pace with detailed, comprehensive educational programs and a commitment to education resulting in the founding of our own BG University in 1999 and the development of the BG Certified Service Advisor Training website in 2011.

Through changing times and technologies, BG has forged ahead under the steady guidance of directors in a line of succession begun with seven entrepreneurial war heroes.

This shop is Outstanding. I used to go to it a long time ago it was run by Mr. Munn. They do just what needs to be done and wont cheat you. Rates are good and work was top notch.

You can also check CheckBook avail online by subscription or go to the library for a free copy. They have ratings by customers that are real and good. The Stealership is absolutely the worst place to go unless you want to pay 2x and intend to have your car rebuilt with original parts. Dont get me wrong I love buying used cars that have been entirely dealer maintained there is just no way I would ever let them touch my vehicle - big time rip off.

Timing belt on a Camry is about as generic as it gets around here so you should be able to find dozens of shops that will do a good job and you can shop prices. Makes sense to replace the water pump then too.

I like DIY jobs but timing belts are too critical for an untrained mech like me to do (at least with my experience) so this is one best left to professionals...

No ones going to replace a timing belt when you have a chain. That's replacing something that doesn't even exist. If you find out they can easily be liable for fraud.

Crooks risk liability for fraud every day.

That's what they do. Because they are crooks. Fraud is their occupation.
