They are still used in va for traffic monitoring purposes, however the municipalities in va can't issue citations. You my friened were in md, where it is still fair game, as it is in dc. Go ahead and not pay, and watch the registered owner of the vehicle lose his/her license.

Actually, there is little chance MD would do it. I've failedd to pay outside of the state before for up to 2 years... your license will likely only be suspended in MARYLAND until you pay, but your rights to drive in VA should stay unimpeded (I mean the owner's rights).

It's supposed to work the other way, where the locals all work together against us, but in practice, they don't bother reporting you to your home state.

Your decision should be based on how often you drive in the state of Maryland. If you do so fairly often, then you ought to pay it. Your driving privileges in the state of MD will be suspended if you don't pay meaning that if you do get pulled over for another traffic offense after this happens, you could be arrested. That would hardly be worth it for a what, $75 ticket? But, if you rarely ever drive in Maryland, then go ahead and roll the bones and see what happens.

I cover my plates with the photoblocker...

http://phantomplate.com/

retails for $30 but got mine off ebay for $9 shipped.

One time I was making a right turn on red in Wash DC..lights began flashing..but no ticket in the mail 3/4 weeks later. =)

Here is a pic before and after applying the blocker. I took a flash photo and as you can see..it works!

hey! Assistant Comm Att..you out there lurking? ROFL

Nope, how are the cops gonna check anyways? by running their fingers over the plates, scratch and sniff under their fingernails? Hilarious imagining a FFX traffic cop doing this to try and detect the spray on a plate.

Dude, its like a clearcoat paint but is thicker, it's totally undetectable. Very ironic how Illinois made it illegal and sales shot through the roof in that state.

Just google it for all the reviews, info, etc.

I've googled the reviews and they are poor, several people have done rather convincing tests showing all those blockers to be bullshit. It all depends on the angle of the camera, light conditions, etc, how the thing will work. Not all roadside cameras are configured the same.

On the good side they are rather cheap so it couldn't hurt just to try. Not like the higher cost risk radar detectors.

I bought some of that spray a few months ago and never got around to applying it... I need to do that soon.

"Virginia outlaws any cover that obstructs the license plate, but the law doesn't specify clear spray coatings. However, Tim Murtaugh, spokesman for Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore, says state law bans "colored glass, colored plastic or any other type of covering" installed over a license plate in a way that alters or obscures."

I see the dark license plate covers all the time here, I thought they were legal. Guess not.

Yes you can get stopped for the photo blocker cover. Know someone who got a ticket for it. $112.00 worth of ticket.

What about just the dark covers in VA? They don't block red light photos, and it would seem pointless to forbid red light blocking photo covers since red light cameras aren't used in VA anyway.

Indeed they are no longer used in VA because of the ACCIDENTS they DIRECTLY cause...mainly motorists being rear-ended because of slamming the brakes at a yellow light to stop in time, so not to get Cam'ed...how brilliant

Photoblocker spray (not plate cover) FTW !

Do they sell the spray at autozone or trak auto (if they're still around)?

there is a store in centreville that sells them according to the washington post article, however, I can't recall which one. I'd guess centreville tire and automotive over there near Ciro's pizza. They seem shady to me.
