Does anyone kite-surf in the potomac/chesapeake?

This looks like a fun sport to get into. Is it possible? Does it happen in this area?

Thanks.

Yeah sure if you don't mind getting some poo on your wetsuit.

You should read up on the chemicals in the Potomac.

Chip does at Belle Haven. It's too cold right now though.

Gravelly Pt is in the flight path of National Airport. Kite surfing would be shutdown in a matter of minutes by the Potomac patrol boats. There almost always three patrol boats on nice weekends. The area around Georgetown north is a wakeless area so sure they would stop you there too.

I would suggest South of the 495 bridge. Maybe out of Tim's Rivershore.

I would suggest a call this place http://www.dckites.com/ for good info.

Like so much these days, pop-info about the Potomac will tend to be hyper-sensationalized into Gothic tales of video-game level horror. In fact, the river is not a threat to a healthy person. Anyone who has just been shot or stabbed should probably avoid swimming in the Potomac, as open wounds are an invitation to unfriendly bacteria to enter and party. Best not to swallow a lot of river water either. If you want to be extra safe, shower and wipe down thoroughly after a swim or other exposure, just as you might do after a dip in the ocean. Otherwise, there is little to fear.

The one actually sensible caveat is to stay out of the water for four or five days after a heavy rainfall. Older parts of DC have common sewage and stormwater systems, and heavy rains can dump both into the Anacostia and Rock Creek, and from there into the Potomac.

There are increasing levels of chemicals in the Potomac, but these are there because people either pee them or throw them into the toilet. Most of these pass through current sewage treatment steps and so end up in the clean water that is released back into the river. At the present time, these chemicals exist at much lower than therapeutic levels, with the most common of them being caffeine. Run for your lives.

Anybody that thinks the saltwater at their favorite ocean beach is clean is kidding themselves. Don't go in the water with open wounds there either.
