On the off chance that I actually get tickets I would go. Otherwise, probably not.

The Post ran an article today, citing the Secret Service's dismissal of the 4-5 million people. The Inaugural Commission is projecting about half that number.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/21/AR2008122102224.html?nav=hcmoduletmv

That being said, 2 million people is just fuckin nuts. No way I feel like dealing with that kind of crowd, I'm not setting foot near Metro that day; will just work from home and watch it on TV.

And, if those high end estimates of 4-5 million people come true, it's going to be utter chaos. I can only imagine what it would be like if we get a snowstorm that day. :))

What do these morons that are traveling here for the Inaugural think they are going to see? Do they think Obama is going to shake their hand?

Is it so they can tell their grandkids they were "there" (but didn't see a fucking thing except the back of some other moron's head)?

I agree w/ your sentiment. The ceremony takes place on the Capitol grounds. Even if you get a spot near the Capitol's reflecting pool, you'll still be a few hundred yards away. If 2 million people show up, be prepared to be standing in a crowd down toward the Washington Monument, more than a mile away.

I guess some out-of-towners get a kick out of that kind of thing. They're not used to "DC" stuff, so it seems extra-special for them. Friends of mine from other cities are *shocked* that I live so close and won't go. To hell with that. It's just another work day that I can call-in for. I predict alot of those folks will have a terrible memory of the event.

Good point. I have attended most of the Inaugurations since the mid-70's
and it seems to bring out delusional hicks from everywhere. Even NYC
and Chicago.

Predictions:

There will be some tourists who refuse to pay attention and actually
think they can drive their car right down Constitution Ave. and find
a parking space.

Most will not be near enough the parade to see much of anything and will
watch the TV screens instead. When they go back home to Podunk, they will
tell everyone that they shook hands with BO himself.

Some will get lost and never make it past the Beltway.

There will be stereotype wannabes. This is my best example. My first
wife and I went to Hogates for a bite after Jimmy Carter's Inauguration.
A young woman (about 19-20 yrs old) was behind us in line waiting to
be seated and was in front of some other tourists who were all gawking
and commenting on what a fantastic experience it had been. She told them
she was from Georgia and had been selected by the incoming Carter
administration to fill a very important high level White House staff job.
They were obviously impressed and asked her how she managed to do so
and this was her direct quote: (Im not making this up)

"I graduated from High School last year in Plains Georgia and got
straight A's on my report cards and had perfect attendance". (roll eyes)
My wife and I had a good laugh over that one. (we knew several White
House staffers)

DONT FORGET TO BUY YOUR SOUVENIRS EARLY!!!!! THEY GO FAST!!!!

I went to see cal ripken inducted into the hall of fame, and the crowd there was the largest ever to watch one of those ceremonies. I hada good feeling I wasn't going to SEE anything... but being in the crowd, feeling the energy, knowing you were in the PRESENCE of the legend... is very powerful.

Now, Obama is 100X more beloved, already, and is accomplishing something far greater than a consecutive games streak. I am surprised ten million aren't going.

How many people went to see Martin Luther King? I've never met one who says the crowd was a problem... they were there sharing the moment, and it will last for all time no matter what they SAW. The sites at such an event are seconday to the experience.

Now, me, I prefer to experience "momentous events" in warm weather.. this january inauguration stuff is a mystery to me. I know it was in march in washington's time, why'd they change it?

I've been to two Inaugurations and you're right - the crowd fades as you get caught up in the momentum. Patience, layered clothing and a camera help to capture the moment and record for posterity.

This will be a momentous and history making Inauguration. Our country has made quite a bit of history over the past decade - this event is one of the good things that kids will read about 100 years from now.

It's good to start the new year out on a positive footing.

Perhaps the best way to answer the question "why go?" is with another question: if you had the chance to go back in time and witness MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech, would you? I think more than 5 million people would. (A lot of the people travelling here have massive expectations for Obama.)

As for why Congress bumped up the inauguration from March to January, can you imagine having to wait 4-5 months for the next administration to take over after an election? I think this time was necessary back in the day for the next president to get his act together, but nowadays, all of that extra time would just be a nuisance.

We could always change Election Day from November to March or April so we could stand among the Cherry Tree Blossoms for the Inauguration.

Determining the original Presidential Election Day was useful at the time, but is no longer applicable. Also, back then, Washington DC was a political town (even wives and family did not accompany Senators and Representatives). The Inauguration was not an event for Americans, it was reserved for politicians and dignitaries.

Time have changed. Maybe it's time to update the code to reflect THESE times.

================

"In 1845, the code established that presidential electors would be appointed on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November every fourth year.

In 1875, it established the date for electing members to the House of Representatives in every even−numbered year.

In 1914, it established the date and the time for electing members to the Senate. The lawmakers chose early November because most Americans at that time lived on farms. They thought November was the best time for farmers and other workers to be able to travel to voting places. Their harvest was finished and the weather was still good enough in most of the country to permit such travel.

The lawmakers chose Tuesdays because most of the people had to travel long distances to voting places. Monday was not considered a good day for an election. It would have forced people to begin their trips on Sunday, the day many people attended church services.

The Federal Election Commission says lawmakers chose the Tuesday after the first Monday because they wanted to prevent Election Day from falling on the first of November. There were two reasons for this. November first is All Saints Day, a holy day for Roman Catholics. Also, most business owners worked on their financial records on the first day of each month. The Federal Election Commission says Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the earlier month could influence those votes."

I'm going! But only because I NEED the money!

A large number of FCPS school buses are going to be used to take people to the Inaugural and I will be driving one of them. They've told us to be prepared for a VERY long day. Out until midnight at least (and the next day is a school day! ARRGGGH).

Before you FCPS haters have a hissy fit, the Federal Government has given FCPS money for years for the use of our buses and drivers. I've always heard it was for emergency evacuations (I've transported folks out of neighborhoods near the river during flooding a couple times)

But maybe it doesn't have to be an "emergency" in the usual sense of the word. lol

I probably need my head examined for volunteering for this, but like I said, I desperately need the money.

In 2001 I went to one of the events on the Mall for Bush's first inauguration. He was like half-a-mile away and I had to watch what was going on on a big screen. Over the years, I have seen him up close about half-a-dozen times, between speeches, motorcades, etc. I'm sure the same will hold true for Obama.

LOL....that reminds me of Babe Ruth. He got an enormous contract of $80,000 in 1928.

A sportswriter asked him, (paraphrasing) "Hey Babe, do you know you make more than President Coolidge?"

The Babe replied, "Well, I'm having a better year!"

If you're planning on going, they just announced that all the bridges from VA into DC will be closed that day. The only exception is the Chain Bridge, which could never accommodate the overflow from the other 4. So you're basically forced to take Metro (good luck finding a parking space), or, you could maybe raft down the Potomac to get in.

It will be interesting to see how this affects traffic around NoVA. I have a feeling alot of out-of-towners might end up not being able to get into the city that day.

Most of the hotels are providing transportation to the central bus terminals and Metro; some are including fare cards as part of the "package."

According to news reports, bridges will be open to pedestrians and people are encouaged to "walk in" to the District whenever possible.

Because the turnout expectations are so high, I wouldn't be at all surprised if most businesses in the DC Metro area close for the day, or grant liberal leave to employees. Commuting is already promised to be a nightmare.

I read that they want to prohibit access to the Potomac as well so you can forget taking a raft down the river. Why would anyone want to be subjected to the craziness? If it snows or rains, it is all for naught.

Bus driver, what route do you cover for FCPS? If it is for any of my kids' schools, I want to be sure to drive them to school on the 22nd. :)

And then the Beach Boys can come and sing the national anthem and Obamaran ("Come shake my hand") and the 4 million people can just pile up on top of each other after they have fainted from the heat -- kind of a temporary Jim Jones-ish look on the mall.

Okay, I'm a big Obama supporter, but I got something today in the mail that I found a little cheesy. It's a large 8 1/2 by 11 envelope that's marked 'handle carefully' from the Obama Inauguration Committee. Here's how it reads:

The Presidential Inaurual Committee requests the honor of your presence to attend and participate in the Inauguration of Barack H. Obama as President of the United States of Maerica and Joseph R. Biden, Jr. as Vice President of the United States of America on Tuesday, the twentieth of January two thousand and nine in the City of Washington.

I'm thinking that this must mean I got tickets after all--then I read on. The next page says:

This commemorative invitation invites your presence at any of the public events in what will be the most open and accessible inauguration in American history.

So now I'm thinking that this isn't an invitation to anything I couldn't attend without an "invitation". Why'd they bother?

What a good time to strike Metro. This is a plan capable of leading to mass destruction. People are stupid to even bother. Hopefully many will see this before the day comes and they will just stay home. This event is really NOT that historic, except our media keeps telling us that it is. Obama has not done anything, yet. As far as we know, he could be just as big an idiot as Bush or Carter. Really, what are we celebrating that causes this much of a to-do?

Of course it's historic. The election of the first black president is something that will be in American history books for the next few centuries.

Im not going but I have to work just across the Key bridge. I am not looking forward to getting to work on the 19 th or the 20....being I live in VA

My take. River road/canal road are going to be parking lots.

even though my wife has a reserved spot at Metro in vienna, I don't think metro is up to the task to handle this "planned emergency", and I don't relish the thought of walking from rosslyn across the key bridge.

Just imagine if it snows or some other emergency...

I may just end up sleeping in my office. seems much easier...

A lot of people think im crazy for not going. Some one made the point of "if you could go back in time and see the i have a dream speech, would you?" To be honest, i don't think i would, It's great thing, but it just doesn't interest me that much.

The future is more interesting to me then the past.

Looking at Voter's post above.

The three bridges from the black neiborhoods in the east side are open to ALL traffic, but the bridges ion the west side of the city are closed or very restricted.

A lot of good it does you to cross those bridges, considering that the areas on the other side are also restricted in the black neighborhoods.

You are going to have to do better than that, bud.

Was down by the capitol today. The Capitol police are already practicing opression on tourists. They had a guy on his belly, cuffed, because he was walking on a closed road. About 50 people witnessed it. Totally ridiculous.

I'm going to work just like normal. I'll watch it on CNN. Thank goodness I work in VA.

The transportation details have just been released for getting into DC from Virginia. Whites should take Rt66 in, Hispanics and Asians should take 395, and African-Americans should take 495.

Can we pass a bill that allows all Fairfax County bars to be open 24 hrs for the week? Could bring in millions for the county.

Not going on Tuesday, but the concert at the Lincoln Memorial should be pretty good. I was sort of hoping for an extended Springsteen set, but with so many performers my guess is that you are going to get one or two songs from each with a lot of performers on stage together.

Haha. What I don't understand is why Metro is not jacking up their fares and lot fees on that day. I mean, why not? It could inject a surge of cash into a system that really needs it. It's not like higher fares would keep people from attending.

Yeah, they should find some way to repay the billions of tax dollars that will be expended to put on this "historical" show-down. Isn't this why Barack asked for the rest of the $350B to be released? Think planners are going to be disappointed with a dismal turnout. Then what a waste.

I guess. Then again they've got lots of fierce ones down where he went to watch Obama take office.
