I am not black. I am an African American. In modern society, the term black is increasingly considered inappropriety. First we were called niggers, then negras, then colored, then negroes, and then black. But now, we are confortable with African American. Remember the two capital As.

It is not like the name Redskin, which was coined years ago and has stood the test of time despite the protestation of the minority. That label should stay the same no matteer the objections. Anyway, a little name never hurt anybody.

How about American? We need to get rid of the hyphenated America which causes nothing but division and dissent. Everything is about skin color. We should be doing everything we can to promote our commonalities not our differences.

What about black people who aren't from Africa? What about white people from Africa? Would someone with Egyptian ancestry be called African American? Would a white person whose ancestors are from South Africa be called African American? Would someone from Jamaica, whose ancestors have been in Africa in hundreds of years be called African American?

Many black people have a serious inferiority complex as a whole and will never be happy with anything they are called.

This topic used to come up a LOT between my Negro friends who were born in America and Africa.

First and foremost there are NO African Americans you were born in America.

My African friends absolutely hated most Negros born in America

Just give it a few years. The twenty year cycle is about up. Blacks tend to run on twenty year cycles on what they want to be called. First it was "colored", then "Negro", then black, and now 'African American". Check back in just a few years and "african american" will be uncool and non-politically correct.

Most Blacks laughed at him, like they're laughing at you. All of my Black friends don't use the words African American.

In fact, the only people I know who use the words African American are limp-wristed White Liberals who don't want to offend anybody.

When I was working, I had an Egyptian kid who always used to list himself as African American. Good for him. I'm sure he got some special consideration, not that he needed it. He was a great kid. I think it's time for all racial classifications to be considered a thing of the past. Nobody today is pure anything.
